It's my observation that, in some field, everyone is "smart."  If my self image required that I be, at all times, smarter than everyone around me, I'd have a hard time.  I value my skills and respect the skills of others.  I see a better indicator to be that I can get along well with people who are skilled in disparate ways.

I admit I helped put myself through school playing chess for money. In the early 70's few women played the game; I was the only female on my university chess team. There I was, this cute tiny blonde person who'd never read a chess book in her life, up against males who lived and breathed Bobby Fischer. I knew none of the standard openings and defenses, yet I kicked some serious chess butt (at 20 bucks a pop). The males automatically assumed I didn't know what I was doing, and learned otherwise. Some even came back time and time again b/c they could not believe "they were beat by a girl."

(I also played poker, same concept: The blonde chick can't possible know what she's doing. At the time I could play one of the best dumb blondes in the universe!)

My point: intelligence is what you make of it, and often, what others percieve to be there (or not).

I am an extremely intelligent female in some ways. I am an idiot (seriously) in others. I need to be with people (dom or sub, doesn't matter) who have the intellectual capacity to converse with me. For instance, I have an interest in evolutionary anthropology; many people do not. I don't mind explaining the differences between the Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures, as long as someone can understand the concepts.

The man I am with is smarter than me about some things; on other things, I'm smarter. We're both smart enough to perceive that and let the expert take the lead as needed.

You know... it amazes me how often people expect their partners to do things that they are not good at. Hey, if you can't build a table very well, you aren't skilled at carpentry, I sure would prefer you spend the cash to get it done right instead of said table falling apart while in the midst of some gloriously sweaty, messy interaction in which I'm getting my (very intelligent) brains... ummm...

What was the question?

She's so "very intelligent" that she calls her self Sun(shineMiss)!

HI! I have one observation. How could anyone fail to respect a person wise enough and humble enough to surround (him or her) self with associates who are smarter?

Okay that was more of a question but I think that the point is valid.

he would have lost all respect if he had beaten his opponent (in this case, his commanding officer) because it would have shown him to be "smarter" than his superior.

For me, it's not chess but instead it's paper, scissor, rock.

Just kidding.

I agree that winning in chess alone is a poor metric for the comparison he makes. I will add that my current domme beat me in chess and I kinda liked that ;-)

To speak to the matter more generally, there are different things that add together to determine how I feel about a domme, included in which are attraction. I find intelligence attractive and lack of it unattractive. While winning in chess is an inadequate metric, the point about respect has some basis.

Also a part of this sum of all things that come together is whether or not I am able to look up to the domme. Again, this matter is neither black or white, nor a matter of intelligence only (it could be other traits I admire), and certainly not defined by chess.

Cheers,

Sea

Woo, good post! I know many people who are book smart but have zero common sense. I know many people who have made a great life for themselves using common sense even though they have no formal education beyond high school. One sub may be a rocket scientist but know nothing about an area that their owner excels at and vice versa. Intelligence is a difficult thing to measure in this respect.

Personally I believe that intelligence is very, very sexy and I detest bimbos whether or not they are vanilla. Refusal to think is a common quality for many who claim to be slaves and it's a pain in the ass to own someone like that. All of my dominant friends agree. I wouldn't lose respect for a submissive who didn't know things because he hasn't had a chance to learn them but I will lose respect for him if he is too lazy to learn.

As far as a slave who knows more about a topic than I do— I see it as an opportunity to learn something new and I welcome it. We all know something that another person doesn't.

How does one go about being fiercely intellectual, VC? I can make quite good tiger-like growling noises and can hiss like a big snake. However, this only works on my nieces when I'm reading them pretty un-intellectual bedtime stories and their only response is to giggle a lot. Is there a knack I should learn?

One has to be visibly frustrated by anti-intellectualism, and take a great and vicious joy in pedantry. Or, at least, that's how we do it. Tiger noises optional. :p

Hah; knew it all along...!

Doesn't matter how philosophical you women get about it, size IS all that matters to you.

Focus.

People like the op described are extremely short sighted. Chess is a cute game, and I will admit I can usually destroy most people at it, but its uses as anything other than a game in today's modern society is limited at best. Heck in all honesty its use as anything other than a game in any age was limited at best. I just don't see how a game that requires sacrificing repeatedly can have any useful links to real life.

To the intelligence point though, i try and surround myself by people who are more intelligent than I am. I get bored extremely easy, and i have an outlook on life that most people simply cannot grasp.

But to me intelligence does not have much in common with dominance.  Intelligence is a great thing, but I'm looking for someone to dominate and take control.

I also agree that intelligence itself is not a good indicator of anything. It is what you do with the tools you are given, not how much of any single tool you have.
