Why do so many people feed trolls such gourmet banquets? When there's ample evidence that someone either needs to crawl back under their nice warm rock, or someone else got clipped a little too close with the shearing clippers, why do people keeping filling up their plates??

I'm not thinking of any one respondent to such a thread, I just want to know. Is it some tacit groupthink that enjoys the batting around of the OP? How can such threads get up to 15 pages within 24 hours, give or take??

I'm not considering myself free of such action either.

Thoughts, anyone??

LaTigresse -> RE: The Care and Feeding of Trolls (4/23/2011 5:25:09 PM)

Sadistic glee.

Seriously, if they are good at it, it is fun to watch people make fools of themselves. It is especially fun if they are extra crazy.

PetiteOralSub -> RE: The Care and Feeding of Trolls (4/23/2011 5:31:26 PM)

I think LaTigresse has a t least a part of it.
Even masochists like myself can't help but watch fascinated as the troll twists and turns and hangs itself on its on ignorant words.

Being English, I wouldn`t like to see anyone go hungry. Will I get in trouble for saying I like to give a dawg a bone ?

I'm with LaT.  Many times, I do it for My own sadistic enjoyment.

Btw, hlen, I did notice that your desire that another particular thread make it to fifty pages did so.  In fact, it hit the 1,000 post mark.  I'm kind of hoping the "As the collar turns and changes" thread will do so as well.  [8D]

This.

And then there are the comments that start out as hijacks and evolve into their own independent conversations.  When that happens, the OP becomes even more irrelevant than s/he was to begin with because the posters involved in those conversations aren't even paying attention to the OP anymore.

That's one of my favourite threads! So I hope so too. ;)

Very well put. :)

LP,

Busted!! In my OP I acknowledged my culpability too! I think it was already 40 some pages when I egged everybody on.

The "As the Collar Turns and Changes (ATCTAC??)" thread is light-hearted and fun for everyone, I think!!

Seriously though, after page 10, does anyone think that the OP is going to see the light?

Nope!

Anyone who is that strong in their convictions is not going to be influenced by online commentary.
In my humble opinion he is too closed off and angry.

Edited to add: And too prideful.

I think the first time I posted about upping the page count was on page 45 post (#885).

Sometimes it's just fun poking them with the broken stick. (Thanks to RS for noting that.)

Care and feeding of trolls
The official manual

Thank you for purchasing the troll package one. It embodies the latest and greatest technology in slurpology. The epitome of any city. With proper care and maintainence your troll will operate flawfully for many, many, many, many, many, many, well you get the idea.

The fuel for the advanced troll is simple. Virgins. They need not be vestal, but sacrificial is preffered. You don't have to, but think of it as putting premium gas in your car instead of regular.

Your new troll requires betwen one and three litres of water per day, or between seven and fifteen litres of beer or other suitable substitute, such as wine or other aparatif.

Your troll needs to eat occasionally, meat is recommended. When it comes time, test your troll as follows; offer two pieces of meat, one cooked and the other not. That way your troll will adjust to the new environment better. A happy troll is a useful troll.

Trolls operate most efficiently under a bridge. To operate the troll simply mount the bridge. If you can't provide a bridge, you must munt the troll directly. You'll figure it out.........

If you have any questions about the care or usage of your troll, please call

ETA I seen the word munt there and decided to leave it there.

Greetings,

In spite of the other responses (which i rarely read) i usually try to give the OP the benefit of doubt. Even when their verbiage is odd or probably instigating the replies they've received i often overlook it. Group think is pervasive in any venue. It's merely a matter of where the individual stands within the community that determines how the question or comment will be received. The supposed trolls aren't the only ones guilty of saying off the wall things. They've simply failed to garner a sympathetic audience for their musings. [;)]

Namaste,

~porcelaine

Hi hlen

I don't mind the argument...in fact I like it but I always treat the op with respect if I post. In fact any first post I make to anyone is with respect. Even if I think the poster is being extreme I try to express my opinion for consideration without rancor.

Yes to some my opinion is extreme or radical at times and I understand that and if they express that to me it is their right.

BUT…If I am not given the respect I give it pisses me off and I will retaliate in kind…unless I feel I am being baited then I just ignore their post.

Butch

Sometimes, they just beg for it. I am so subbylike, I can not help but give them what they want....

NocturnalStalker -> RE: The Care and Feeding of Trolls (4/23/2011 6:27:38 PM)

These boards need more heavy-hitting like that last topic.  That was fantastic.  I could eat dinner and read that and I eat dinner at a dinner table.

I want it to go beyond just a bunch of random newcomers though.  We should have well-known posters going off on eachother.  In fact, I'm calling YOU out right now!  Let's fight.  Battle me.  Challenge me.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: The Care and Feeding of Trolls (4/23/2011 6:34:50 PM)

You are so adorable. Just remember, the grouchylunchladies always have big knives.

And the southern wimmens always have firearms.

Wanna settle this with a game of Boggle?

Have you heard of the Book Club?
