I think that the interest is not so prevalent as you might think, but that our population is so large that any sliver of it is a substantial number.

I'm curious as to why the op assumes anyone kinky must also  be highly cynical.
It's a pageant with fairy tale like carriages and dresses. Why wouldn't people want to watch it? And for much the same reason as you watch the Oscars, just the gorgeous pageantry of it all.

In my opinion (and I can't offer more, since I'm not a yank) Americans have always had a certain fascination with British royalty, which is kind of funny when you think of their history. I think it's existed prior to Diana, but her popularity certainly wasn't lost on Americans. It's a bit of the fairy tale thing. A prince finds his princess (although she's not one in the official sense), falls in love and now they are getting married. Isn't that the stuff of fairy tales and don't we all want to believe in that regardless of how jaded and cynical we may be? :)

It's the fault of Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco.

(p.s. there's a road in Philadelphia named after her brother who was a Philly politician and an Olympic athlete. A little Royal - esque trivia for you).

I dont know why you think this wedding is big interest in America.  Most of us are sick of hearing about it and wish they would just elope.

That is a load of nonsense... I can guaran-dang-tee you it will have a HUGE U.S. audience!

I remember Diana and Charles' wedding. I got up extra early before going to school so I could see it.

I just watched an episode last night of Spooks (British TV) in which tehy discussed the "Diana was murdered" conspiracy theory. Love that show. But I digress.

I personally felt a kinship with Diana because we got married at the same time..... though my wedding was a tad less grandiose. And my dress was a lot prettier. We were pregnant together, had sons within weeks of each other, had marital problems at the same time....I actually worried for awhile that I might also die young in a horrible car crash....

Strangely, my older son has a resemblance to Prince William, too, almost uncanny in some photographs. I swear Chuck never touched me.

Diana's face was on the cover of People mag, and many other American magazines for YEARS. So apparently, somebody in America was buying them.

I wish William and Kate well, and I like that they're more down-to-earth and "real" than the previous generation. I think she's lovely and it looks as though they just "fit" together well. I hope Harry finds the same fit someday (if he hasn't already that they're keeping secret.)

I'm totally with Des.  A lot of it is about the dress, the horse drawn carriages, and so on.  A number of famous people have big weddings, but they aren't quite to the same level as a royal wedding.

I like seeing happy couples. I like seeing the smiles on the faces and joyousness when people marry.

I like to see that Diana's sons are happy and healthy and honoring their mother.

I find royalty of any country to be interesting.

I like to see the romanticism. it's the whole fairytale thing that every or at least most girls dream of when they are little...hoping one day our prince will come along and sweep us off our feet.

Yeah we know most men don't really get that but that doesn't man we stop dreaming of it and so when we see this it's like living our fantasy through them.

I always wonder what purpose England serves in this world other than show us what happens when you get lost in Disneyland.

I wish them well and happiness.   But in light of cutbacks and the collapse- I think they should cut back on frills. Reminds me of how Bush had an inaugaral ball for his re-election when we were at war.

I'm Canadian and still remember waking up at some ungodly hour to watch the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.  And then had to go to work one exhausted chiquita.  I plan on waking up at another ungodly hour (3 am EST) to watch Prince William marry Kate.

Why?  Because of the pomp and pageantry and knowing that this time the love seems real.  None of that "deer caught in the headlights" syndrome that plagued Diana for so many years.  She did a good job with both her boys, regardless of her personal demons and I'd like to think they take after her more than ole Chuck.

THIS.
I got up at the asscrack of early to watch William's parents marry, and I'm getting up to watch this.
I like these kids. They seem very nice, and of course I want to see The Dress. (duh)
Just a wee bit of timeless beauty in a hard world full of war, poverty, judgemental poppycock and ugly attitudes.

I'm sure the wedding will be steeped in the tradition of Royal Weddings here with the usual pageantry that we do so very well.

The wedding itself holds little to no interest for me apart from the fact that we're holding a Street Party to celebrate, and I'll have musicians to shepherd about and will be blithering and dithering about what I'll be playing and when etc.

It's a day off, it's an occasion, it's given us a great reason to have a right ol'  party in the street. I'm sure we'll all toast Will and Kate and wish them every happiness and so on. It'll be fun if we have a bit of the spirit of Proms in the Park thrown in......yeah!

Termy is a bit sad with his rifle and scope...... It's basically a young couple getting hitched, that's all......and that's pretty much how most people see it.
