i didn't even know there was a wedding until very recently, so you can see the depth of my concern.why do north americans love them? because they are famous i guess. and because their personal lives are a clusterfuck, north americans love a celebrity trainwreck (tiger woods/charlie sheen). my only interest in her dress is sort of hoping somebody steps on the train and it rips off. i've looked her up online and wouldn't mind seeing her in her underwear.

I am interested because she is marrying the future King of my country. I don't know if I really care about having a King or not, but I have one (well a Queen now...but you know what I mean), so it's of interest. And I want to see the dress too. That and the fairy tale aspect of it also appeals to me, I always wanted to be a princess when I was little. <tiny blush>

I think Harry is gay. I have no explainable reason for this, its just a gut feeling I get when I see pictures of him, especially video. Maybe something about the way he moves.

Really? You'd prefer they take after a spoiled self-centereed little brat rather than a highly intelligent and dedicated servant of the people? Luckily for us it seems you are wrong, at least in the case of William...Harry I'm not so sure of. He seems a lot like his mother, but thankfully he's unlikely to ever take the throne.

In my opinion (and I can't offer more, since I'm not a yank) Americans have always had a certain fascination with British royalty, which is kind of funny when you think of their history. I think it's existed prior to Diana, but her popularity certainly wasn't lost on Americans. It's a bit of the fairy tale thing. A prince finds his princess (although she's not one in the official sense), falls in love and now they are getting married. Isn't that the stuff of fairy tales and don't we all want to believe in that regardless of how jaded and cynical we may be? :)

I do not think the average American is enamored with British royalty. Knowing what I do about American history, and Americans in general, is that there were rich Americans that at one point sought to attain social standing by marrying into royal families, and attaining titles to further themselves socially, the term was Nouveau Rich for these people. In American society those with money make the rules, so if it is cool to be married to royals without anything but their title to recommend them, then Americans go with that idea...

Most people I know are not enamored with the idea of British royalty, have no aspirations to be royalty themselves, and perhaps have a passing interest in the history of the English monarchy to explore our own colonial history. Most Americans are proud we have no titles, and that our public servants are not allowed to have any either (meaning those who hold elected office).

Personally, I am slightly interested in the trappings of the royal family because I have an interest in architecture, and it is really hard to understand the history of European architecture outside of the political climate it arose from. I also love old stories, myths and legends.... the types of stories that spawned more contemporary classics, such as LOTRs.

Yes!  I was going to post this earlier!  Harry makes me gaydar go off like an air raid siren.  There's nothing in particular I can point out, I just have a really strong feeling about it.  And if he is, I really feel bad for him - he'll have a hard road ahead of him.

You're right, it won't be easy for him at all. But if he's smart about it he'll be OK I think. If he lives quietly on one of his manors with his boyfriend. And actually hires the boyfriend as his private secretary or something, I think he'll be left alone. A lot of the aristocracy live very strange lives, being eccentric is an honourable tradition. But if he makes a big deal about it, he'll be put through the ringer.

The woman certainly had her problems, no doubt about that, but knowing from your wedding day that you're the 2nd woman in your husband's life certainly isn't conducive to the makings of stability.  And she did a lot of charity work, things that were left alone before she started.

He may be highly intelligent and a dedicated servant of the people, but IMO he's also a rat-bastard cheater of the first order and seemed to be an unfeeling git.  Although he finally did smarten up with the boys after Diana passed away.

Dianna was a nice lady.  I liked her.  Tho people do need to get over her and stop trying to relive the 80s.

Why anyone would want to watch it is beyond me.

But, I've just pulled these staggering, barely believable figures from TNSGlobal (whoever they are):

They've undertaken some survey and concluded the following:

1) One to two billion worldwide will watch it.
2) 44% of Germans will watch it, and 42% of Americans.
3) About 40% of Britons will watch it.
4) The Dutch don't care at all, surprisingly the French are showing a lot of enthusiasm for it, and of all the Europeans the Germans are the most interested.

I'm amazed 40% of Britons will watch it - no one I know cares - but I'm sure it's a monumental event among the jam making women's institute of Herefordshire.

Was reading in one of the newspapers that Kate Middleton will enrich the economy by billions on the back of fashion, tourism etc. There's the answer to our economic woes: more royal titles handed out, more royal weddings = the economy advanced by trillions.

How can you not be happy for two young people who are in love and have chosen to express it by uniting today? :)

Because a few hundred people will be marrying today its not the news they are making it out to be. Its stupid to be using so much brainpower as well as additional money on something that will most likely not last... when it could be used on more pressing matters... like the 400+ people whove died recently in the southern united states....

It's 4:13 am, I still haven't gone to sleep.  Been watching different specials since 2am and found a silly horror movie at midnight.    Hopefully I don't.  Less than 2 hrs to go and Ima hopin' I don't fall asleep sitting up.  Hate cricks in da neck!

I feel happy for all of those other couples marrying for love too! :) And I would suggest to you that the flip side of your argument is also true: Should they be denied those of us feeling happy for them just because they are in the public eye? :)

As for the money the wedding is costing...it's my understanding the Queen is paying for the bulk of it. I'm sure she has sympathies with those devastated by the storms in southern USA, but that is an entirely different subject.

Tip: we can be both happy for the couple exchanging vows today and supportive of those who have suffered devastating losses at the hand of mother nature.

I guess I'm lucky. It's 11 p.m. in my time zone and the ceremony starts in an hour. I'll probably stay up for another half an hour to see if Kate makes an appearance by then. I figure it will take a while to walk up that ailse. I'm recording the rest of it. ;)

Okay, i wasn't concerned with the wedding perse` but i did want to see what everyone was wearing and Kate's dress -- great choice btw.  I think she did great in combining modern with traditional (i.e., needing to be covered up etc).

But something odd struck me and maybe it won't others but i found it extremely tacky that at such a formal affair, many of the women were dressed in all their wedding day finery sans stockings.  In browsing the pictures, the bare legs of the women in their short dresses wedding day finery and fancy hats next to men in their tuxes, just stood out to me and struck me as odd and tacky.

Just out of curiosity, has it been decided if she gets the title of Princess?  Some of the pics are saying the Duchess of Cambridge, but i don't get all the title things.  To me, if she is marrying the prince she should be a princess lol.

There are many and important debates to be had about this subject, yet no-one is broaching them on this thread. It's disgraceful.

BTW: Kate Middleton anagram - Naked Tit Model.

You heard it here first.

That is all.

The extra bank holiday in honour of the wedding will cost the UK economy between 2.4 and 6 billion pounds, according to the CBI. Just saying.
