ORIGINAL: DeviantlyD In my opinion (and I can't offer more, since I'm not a yank) Americans have always had a certain fascination with British royalty, which is kind of funny when you think of their history. I think it's existed prior to Diana, but her popularity certainly wasn't lost on Americans. It's a bit of the fairy tale thing. A prince finds his princess (although she's not one in the official sense), falls in love and now they are getting married. Isn't that the stuff of fairy tales and don't we all want to believe in that regardless of how jaded and cynical we may be? :) I do not think the average American is enamored with British royalty. Knowing what I do about American history, and Americans in general, is that there were rich Americans that at one point sought to attain social standing by marrying into royal families, and attaining titles to further themselves socially, the term was Nouveau Rich for these people. In American society those with money make the rules, so if it is cool to be married to royals without anything but their title to recommend them, then Americans go with that idea... Most people I know are not enamored with the idea of British royalty, have no aspirations to be royalty themselves, and perhaps have a passing interest in the history of the English monarchy to explore our own colonial history. Most Americans are proud we have no titles, and that our public servants are not allowed to have any either (meaning those who hold elected office). Personally, I am slightly interested in the trappings of the royal family because I have an interest in architecture, and it is really hard to understand the history of European architecture outside of the political climate it arose from. I also love old stories, myths and legends.... the types of stories that spawned more contemporary classics, such as LOTRs.
