Always exceptions, and I can think of a dozen: 'Being There' is a far, far better movie than book; Jerzy Kozinski was a sick, sick puppy. In decreasing awfulness: Red Alert --> Dr. Strangelove. Bambi. Planet of the Apes. Ben-Hur. The Maltese Falcon/The Thin Man. Bladerunner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Angels and Insects.

I liked both, but the movie still wins: M*A*S*H; Shawshank Redemption/Hearts in Atlantis, Silence of the Lambs

And both sucked: The Godfather, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment

And both so fabulous, I can't choose: How the Grinch Stole Christmas book and cartoon, Persuasion 1995, Great Expectations 1946

Opinion is invalid from here on out.

That'll make my ex happy.  I, on the other hand, had to quit partway through book 4.  I can't read a three page description of someone's outfit without falling asleep.  Besides that, there is not a single sympathetic character in the whole series.  They're all a bunch of whiners and idiots.

Nah. Mat Cauthon rocks.
He is absolutely all time bad ass. And Funny as hell.

Typical Mat line.
"Where are you going?"
"I saw a woman who tried to kill me."
"Give her a trinket next time."

But yeah, they can be a tough read. Certainly not what I would call top echelon fantasy (I'm really picky bout writing so my HOF is small), but the man is terrific at world building.
Then he went and died, which kinda crushes the series.

I give up trying to post pictures.
Le sigh.

The ex told me I'd eventually like Mat, but at the point I gave them up he was still pretty whiny and annoying.  I might give them another go at some point, when I have a lot of time and less going on in life to distract me.

Kana -> RE: What books would you like to see made into TV shows or movies? (5/3/2011 10:27:19 PM)

Sadly they really don't strike out on their own till about the fourth book, which means you've done some serious sledding through some wanna-be LOTR for about 3,000 pages first.
So I understand completely anyone who can't stick through...heck, I suspect if they came out now I wouldn't have made it over the 3rd book hump, but back in the day I had lots more free time.
Ahhhh, wasted youth-what a wonderful thing.

Is enough of a nerd to admit she would love to see the speical fx for The dragon riders of pern. Is also just deep enough to admit she respects Will more now for saying he would like to see Stranger in a strange land.

I'd at least be curious, if prepared for disappointment, to see what might happen with Clancy's Without Remorse. I haven't read it in a long time, but I seem to remember thinking it might lend itself to a decent film adaptation. I guess IMDb mentions something about a possible production, but no idea if anything ever came of that.

To each their own, some people do not have the attention span to hold on to the details, and the idea of real character development escapes them when it comes to epic storytelling....that is no insult, it is just that you have to have a really long attention span to enjoy certain pleasures

Part of that I loved about Robert Jordan is that he created a world, not just a story. He literally created entire cultures out of thin air, and as someone who studies culture, that is not an easy thing to do...I would recommend that you stay away from real life ethnography... you would find them tedious.

edited because it sounded snarky and that wasn't what I was wanting to do...

I am kind of disappointed they are making these books into movies. The reason why I am somewhat disappointed is that they were really meant for a television series, like Battle Star Galactica. The last I had read on this subject a few months ago was that while the rights had been purchased there were no plans to do anything with them.

I can understand why they decided to make them into movies because there is more likelihood they will make money on them, I mean look what happened to Legend of the Seeker.... it didn't get a chance to explore Goodkind's vision and his plot lines for Kaylan and Richard.

Not only are all of these books very long, but they do not end in ways that make good standalone movies. If there is one criticism I have of Jordan, it is that there were never any tying up of threads within the stories, he would just open more of them by introducing new characters, yet never resolving their conflicts. I think that this annoyed many readers of the series. My ex read 5 books, and he quit because he said "It has become obvious to me this series is not being designed to ever end".....on the one hand, that is a testament to Jordan's commitment to the characters and the world he created, obut I can understand that those seeking resolution were deeply disappointed.

I will admit I was slightly angry with him when he up and got terminally ill before writing the final installment and wrapping up every loose thread, and there were so many loose threads that it was as if his replacement author ( Brandon Sanderson) had to write three books to attempt to mend the tapestry of the storyline.

I have to agree with a few and state that I would like to see none made into movies. The few movies I HAVE seen that have been made from books were horrible. For some reason, most 'book into movie' situations seem to lose alot in the transfer from one to the other.

On the other hand, the few movies I have seen BEFORE reading the book ended up the same way. I found that the book sucked after having seen the movie first.

Don't figure.

/shrug

Most likely because you watched the movie without any preconceived notions who was who and what was what.

It seems that a great number of people would be surprised how a large majority of movies ARE based on books.

There are a couple of movies I saw first, then read the books. "Jurassic Park". I was disappointed in the movie after the fact when I read the book, because some very important information had been left out of the book.

I read "Gone With The Wind" after having seen the movie at least a dozen times. I still love the movie, but the information that was left out was kind of mind boggling. The fact that Scarlett was only 14 at the start, had children with Charles Hamilton and Frank Kennedy. The book was way better than the movie, but I still love both.

Time Enough for Love
Stranger in a Strange Land

By Robert A Heinlein

Both are epic novels with poly protagonists giving great insight on what it means to be human. My fav quote is a placeholder at kaloneric.com:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

I was entertained by the "Legend of the Seeker" show, but also disappointed. It seems like everything that comes out of New Zealand has to have at least 1/4 of each eposide devoted to choreography posing as "fighting". Zena and Hercules started that shit (well, actually, Sam Raimi, the producer, did). BTW, the chick who was Lucy's stunt double in Zena also doubled for Uma in the "Kill Bill" flicks.

I'd like to see David and Leigh Eddings' "Belgariad" quintology made into a series. There was some truly funny materiel in those books. The scene where Garion, attempting to move a boulder by magic, instead succeeds in pushing himself armpit deep into the ground because he failed to magically "brace" himself had me in stitches.

This!  I love Eddings' work.  Not terribly good writing, but very engaging.  While WoT felt like a drag to me, all of Eddings works are pageturners.

Also Lackey and Mallory's Obsidian Trilogy.  Very good reads, and would translate well to the screen.

None. I never like movies made from books. The books are always better and the characters never look the way they look in my mind.

This thread kicked in an idea I've been pondering for almost two years.

H. Beam Piper's "Little Fuzzy" series has gone public domain so there would be no hassle of turning it into a script.
A wonderful story and just made for a Jim Henson treatment and mucho bucks from after market sales.

Yeah, I'd even put a plush fuzzy on my bookshelf... the story is that good.

Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica.

Either that or Calvin and Hobbes.
