Time Enough for Love
Stranger in a Strange Land

By Robert A Heinlein

Both are epic novels with poly protagonists giving great insight on what it means to be human. My fav quote is a placeholder at kaloneric.com:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

I'd be terrified to see these made into movies. Look at the atrocity that is Starship Troopers.

Uller the Shyne!!!!!

This book by an obscure yet up and coming author just rocked my world.

Written by Wulfgar (link in my sig line) this character is the epitome of male, a dominant polygamous big meat hanging OMG I want to do this character in the worst way, hunk of male.

Um....where was I? Oh yes, this book is one of a series, all of which I'd love to see turned into an epic set of movies. They have everything, three worlds, nine moons, dragons, gorgeous women, demons, assassins, intrigue, intrigue, intrigue and some of the hottest sex, plain sex, group sex...did I say sex, you've ever seen.

Coming from this Wulfgar next (I saw on the website) is Vol the Outlaw. I can't wait.

Make that a third vote for Uller! I'm currently reading this and yes, I think it would make a great movie! Any votes for what actor would be the best choice for the role?

Other books I'd like to see on the screen....the "Girl" series (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest).

Anne McCaffreys Freedom series.

I always had a thing for Zainal the renegade Catteni.

Providing you don't mind subtitles, no need to wait any longer: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. There's also an English remake currently in production.

I have seen them all so far, and found them amazingly well done.  I got so absorbed in them that I didn't even notice that I was reading subtitles after a while.  The second was my least favorite out of the three, but completely necessary to string the first and third together - and though not as good as the others, the second was still pretty damn good by modern movie standards.

I'd be terrified to see these made into movies. Look at the atrocity that is Starship Troopers.

I feel bad about what they did to Starship Troopers too.  They even made sequels . . . ack.  So you're saying that Casper Van Dien and Michael Ironside's experience in other B movies didn't help their worthless acting and not even a lesbian sex scene between Denise Richards and Dina Meyer could have saved the film?  Ok... point taken about Starship Troopers.  However, Starship Troopers was not one of Robert A Heinlein's milestone works. It was about the distant future and Earth was at war with a race of giant alien insects.  That's B movie plot fodder.  I admit that Stranger in a Strange Land could swing either way depending how it was handled.  But Time Enough for Love is another matter entirely.  Even a mediocre in the part of  Lazarus Long would make it an epic movie because the plot and life perspectives are so good.

Stranger in a Strange Land is the saga of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who came to Earth as an adult after being raised by Martians as a child (on Mars). It's about his interaction with and perspectives on Earthlings, our culture and his personal growth.  He arrives on our planet with psi powers - telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others - and complete innocence regarding the mores of man.

After his tutelage under a surrogate-father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a messiah figure. His introduction into Earth society, together with his exceptional abilities, lead Valentine to become many things to many people: freak, scam artist, media commodity, searcher, free-love pioneer, neon evangelist, and martyr.

The novel has never been out of print and he won a Hugo Award for it.  It's called Heinlein’s earthly “divine comedy.”

Time Enough for Love was nominated for the Nebula Award, the Hugo and Locus Awards.  The book is about the life of Lazarus Long, the oldest living human who is two thousand years old.  He recounts his life to attendants who are charged with inspiring him not to execute his right to die.  Lazarus is convinced to dictate the story of his life. So we flashback through dozens of tails packed with drama, adventure, romance, war, politics and power.  He finds that while he has lived and loved more than most, there are still things that he'd like to experience.

Even better is the unabridged version of "Stranger" (his widow added back in about 60K words), IMO.

I seriously doubt that Hollywood could do the book justice. Most directors would have to pee in it, so they'd like the flavor (a paraphrase of Jubal in "Stranger") better. I can't think of a director who wouldn't fuck it up. Perhaps that Indian chap who directed the Cate version of "Elizabeth". I think he did a brilliant job with that film. Maybe Ridley Scott, he did a great job overlaying the violence with the ambivalence and uncertainty of Deckerd in Blade Runner. Frankly, US audiences are generally too stupid to grasp thematic complexity in films. They barely understand car chases and gun battles.

Casting it would be a bitch, too. The character of Jubal Harshaw would have to have the screen presence of a George C. Scott, as that is the sort of larger-than-life character he is in the book, and is, IMO, every bit as important to the story as VM Smith. I have no iodea who could play Smith; that would be a very nuanced performance. If only Kevin Spacey were in Brad Pitt's body of 20 years ago.

Jubal Harshaw is one of my favorite characters of all time. I love his cameo in The Cat Who Walks Through Walls. The only actor I can see even possibly playing him is Ed Harris or Morgan Freeman.

Time Enough will forever be a hard sell to Hollywood, if only for the various incest angles.
