For me, one of life's greatest consolations is that there doesn't seem to be any purpose behind its misery. I can forgive the universe for accidentally creating life--indeed, there's nothing to forgive. But to forgive someone for deliberately doing so? Never.

You could say that atheism has allowed me to make peace with God.

Initially people didn't understand where they came from or before science, people just said God created everything Earth and man. It was the easiest way to explain what they didn't know. The Bible was written by human beings over 1000 years and it has been rewritten several times by the church to smooth out the inconsistencies.

They use God to control human behavior. They use God to manipulate us and tell us what to do. Religion can also be used to justify people doing bad things like people discriminating against gay people. They also use God to get us to donate money. Who can forget Jim and Tammy Bakker and their opulence and gold bathtubs.

Because while you struggle and suffer through life you can rest assured that there is a magical place in the clouds where you will eventually be happy for all eternity.

Pft, rule. I intend to disappear into the earth, return to the spirit of nature, to continue that cycle. No magical place for me... unless you call nature magical.. which I could fully understand.

Dont judge me because I sin differently than you.
If you want it sugar coated, dont ask me what i think! It would violate TOS.

So does this mean I'm never going to get my 72 virgins?

See, thats the problem with you "rational thinkers". HAWT to me may not be HAWT to you (unless we are discussing one of Lucy's avatars... which in case HAWT would be the same).

Nope, not allowed. You must be in a concrete thing so that the resources you used in life are never returned to the soil from which they came.

Life can't be all fun and games, you need the misery and suffering to either:

A) Be thankful you aren't suffering the same misery.
B)As a contrast to all the pleasure

I see people have their lives ripped apart by those storms in the US recently and these people thanked god they wasn't killed. They however didn't wonder who created such storms in the first place. Perhaps god was trying to assassinate them but he missed the target.

I think most people want to deny oblivion. Otherwise they want to believe that those they love and have lost still exist and sometime in the future they will be with them again…That life really means something in the universe. The alternative is depressing.

What parent that has lost a child does not want to believe they are in a better place loved and waiting for them.

Of course the other part is the desire to defeat death.

I believe the two above desires are the driving force for the want and need of God.

I want to believe they are true.

Rule, you do know that the only virgins in heaven are those that you wouldn't touch wearing a body condom.

I made peace with the whole issue when I quit trying to figure it out.

Not feeling the need to 'make peace' with others' understanding of anything was quite the freeing experience.

For me, one of life's greatest consolations is that misery exists right next to plenty of joy.

I don't care whether it has a purpose. It is.

And I don't care if some call it God.

I am religious and think it is a good question...not a bash.

Guilty conscience there, joe?

In response to the OP...

I thought about this for a while. I'd love to be held accountable for what I've done wrong, but I don't need a god for that. I've come to figure out that I'm the harshest judge I'll ever face.

I'd love for there to be a god I could ask for help, but I don't need that either. I'm perfectly capable of living my life, and do well without spiritual guidance.

What I really can't do myself is answer the questions of how and why. How was it all brought into existence, and why? It would be nice to be able to have that explained to me.
