Actually, arrogance versus confidence is an interesting distinction (but then I'm the gal who loves to split hairs...) In Korea, you never admit you are good at something - even admitting the truth is considered arrogant. I've done anonymous questionairres with people in which they are able to admit that they are good at something, but ask them verbally, they'll just deny everything. On the other hand, they see us waygooks (Foreigners) as exceedingly arrogant - even when we are just speaking the truth. "Yes, I'm a good salsa dancer," I'll tell them. "But I'm an awful tango dancer." Not arrogance (in my world), just the truth. But it is so shocking for them to hear us say we are good at something. One of those cultural things... best, sunshine

yeah.. this board is so Ameri-centric, that other cultures dont get considered enough when these types of questions get brought forward. However, I think it is important to also take into consideration WHICH culture the OP is from.. Thank you, Sunny//

Seriously, I cannot tell her I am good at anything, I am supposed to wait for outside feedback to tell me I am good, and then meekly say "Thank you, but I am not THAT good"... she loves to compliment her kids, but we aren't supposed to "brag" either. It took me a long time to tell other people I was "good" at something, and still I tend to try to show it instead of saying it

nah.. IME. the arrogance level is no different. I was married to a Brit, I've spent quite some time around them, and I find the Brits (and most other Nationalities) to be no better or worse than Americans.

GreedyTop - I've met people from all over the world and Americans are by far the most arrogant. Followed closely by the British and the French. Yes, that is a generalization and there are some fantastic, down to earth, people in all 3 of those countries - I'm speaking in general. The most down to earth, easy going, friendly people I've met have to be the Australians but, again, there are exceptions. But, that's just my opinion and experience.

i think arrogance is very subjective. some people will acuse others of arrogance just because they hold to their own opinion instead of being swayed. some are open about how good they are at a certain thing. being self awear and confident can be seen as arrogance, especially by those who wish they could be more like that. actually to be arrogant, as a dictionary would have it, means that you put yourself over others with self-importance, thinking you are better than others. i tend to find that those people are the ones who twist everything someone says and quickly resort to insults when not getting their own way. most bullies are arrogant. in the short time i've been on this site i've already seen those who are very quick to jump on other people for one thing and another and hate it when others argue back at them. it's just people though and this place is no differnt to any other site at all no matter what the site subject is. needles

That's a fascinating cross-cultural viewpoint sunshine. I'm just laughing at how starkly different that is from me who goes by the motto my mentor gave me 20 some odd years ago. The difference between arrogance and self confidence is whether or not you're right." So in my world, being correct is the only thing required to make it "not boasting or arrogance" -- even in a directly confrontational statement like, "I'll squish you like a bug." If I manage to do so, then I see it as simply confidence. Only if I fail is it arrogance.

I'd make a difference, take a job interview, and you get told "we are looking for somebody who is ..., our goals are..., the right candidate can do ....." A confident answer would be "I've done something similar in the past and I think my skills match your demands, I'm positive I can do...." The arrogant answer would be "Well, I'm the best, I can do it all and much more, you will not find anybody better than me!"
