Wow!!! 70% is a high rate in your area...uggghh......I remember a guy who worked in our circuit board department at the electronic company I worked at for almost 20 years and he would ask if I wanted a puff....it was a small tech company then and as long as he did what he was supposed to do what the heck...this for me was always going to lunch at the local Mexican restaurant.

The number came up when they made the mall non-smoking. It was quite controversial.

I am surprised that more do not roll their own cigs.  Due to the cost.

A friend of mine adopted 2 cats from a shelter, they were found dehydrated in an apartment, their owner - an old man - had passed away, but he used to smoke several cigars a day in a small apartment and apparently never aired, both cats have severe lung problems and are asthmatic.

I'm a very moderate smoker (about 5 a day) and will go out as I don't want the house to smell of smoke, if I am smoking outside and one of the cats is near, he will tell me off, he doesn't like the smell of it. Now one of our friends prefers errr herbal stuff, he had a joint in the garden and the cats and dogs were all over him, the dogs tried to frisk his pocket where he kept his stash, the cats wanted a blow-back... Strange, you'd think a cat who finds the smell of cigs offensive would be even more offended by pot... Oddly enough inhaling pot gives me asthma attacks (found that out as a teenager, so there was never a big risk of me becoming a pot head)

I actually do not mind the smell of pot,

I do mind the munchies of it tho- to which I would weigh 400 lbs.... if I used pot.

All the perils of the world, and were worried about smoking around a specie of animal that is grossly over populated. face-palm.

pahunkboy -> RE: Should smokers be allowed to smoke near cats? (5/20/2011 7:17:03 AM)

A cat can go hide-  parrots tho can not.  Birds are very sensitive.

I mind-  the smell of colognes, sprays,  even some soaps.    I am not asthmatic but it sure seems that way when I am near smoke.

It's shocking, isn't it, we worry about pets we love and who can't consent, what's the world coming to? Parents will try and raise their children to be responsible and teach them that pets are a responsibility? It's outrageous!

samboct -> RE: Should smokers be allowed to smoke near cats? (5/20/2011 7:24:12 AM)

I don't think smokers should be allowed near cats unless the cat has been well doused with acetone, gasoline, lighter fluid- some type of highly volatile accelerant. I'm not the first one with this idea- the nickname for petroleum ether in the lab is "pet ether". Of course, offering the cat a choice with a full bathtub might be the humane thing to do- but really- it's a cat, and when has anything other than killing and torturing others crossed its mind?

When they come to you and cuddle up and purr nicely and show you affection, they are doing that to nice people...

You are spreading rumors about sweet and affectionate animals, you'd think they'd be evil things that are trying to take over the world!

"When they come to you and cuddle up and purr nicely and show you affection, they are doing that to nice people.."

Then how do you explain the bloody stumps that people occasionally draw back from a purring cat? Or the number of ER visits from cat owners with nasty, infected bites. I'll bet that in ER visits- more non-dog owners are bitten than their owners. With cats, I'll bet its the other way around.

The comparison with Adolf Hitler is a good one- and finally- a cat that shows its true colors!

Sneakiness: AH yes, Feline yes
Desires to take over the world: AH yes, Feline yes
Dreams of killing owners: AH yes*, Feline yes
Lies: AH yes, Feline yes
Hates Jews: AH yes, Feline qualified yes- cats don't seem to have any extra antipathy towards Jews
Hates Dogs: AH, no, Feline yes (canines have the ability to thwart the evil plans of felines.)
Eats meat: AH no (vegetarian), Feline yes
Hypnotic voice: AH yes, Feline yes (cat's purrs are tuned to the same pitch/frequency as a babies cries.)
Afraid of water: AH yes, Feline yes
Dislikes cigarettes: AH, yes, Feline yes
Dislikes sex: AH yes, Feline yes (if you ever see what a cat penis looks like- it's not surprising)

* AH was not fond of capitalists, but needed their money and support to get elected. Once he assumed power, there were a number of his backers that quickly came to regret their actions.

So clearly- while AH and felines aren't identical, they have many common traits- bad ones.

Given your list with a few exceptions or one or other different answer, I might have dated AH - only they didn't have the ugly tash and tended to look a bit more human...

Edibles....lol... at least that is what my friends tell me, many of them have tried to get me to imbibe with them

samboct -> RE: Should smokers be allowed to smoke near cats? (5/20/2011 12:04:22 PM)

Common wisdom amongst vets seems to be that cat owner are more at risk--

"Dog bites are a community problem, affecting a larger group of people, while cat attacks tend to be a personal problem, affecting only the owner, said Dr. Kerry Muhovich, animal behavior education coordinator for the Dumb Friends League.

But cat bites can be the more dangerous injury—cats’ saliva can contain particularly harmful bacteria and can cause serious infections. “I might not think of seeing a doctor for a dog bite, but I can’t think of any cat bite I wouldn’t think of seeing a doctor for,” Dr. Muhovich said. Cat scratches can also transmit bacteria."

I've been meaning to ask, is the SAM sig short for Smart Assed Masochist? [;)]

Well, I would say humans are grossly over populated too. Yet we worry about them homeless and starving, here and in other countries. Maybe we shouldnt, huh?

It's humans who are responsible for the overpopulation.  And, well, some of us LIKE our pets.

I don't understand a person's desire to torture an innocent living thing. It twists my mind up to read words like this because I just don't get such over the top cruelty - even in thoughts.

And if you think all cats do is kill and torture, you don't know cats at all.  It's an ignorant statement.  Were you attacked as a child?
