A friend of mine adopted 2 cats from a shelter, they were found dehydrated in an apartment, their owner - an old man - had passed away, but he used to smoke several cigars a day in a small apartment and apparently never aired, both cats have severe lung problems and are asthmatic. I'm a very moderate smoker (about 5 a day) and will go out as I don't want the house to smell of smoke, if I am smoking outside and one of the cats is near, he will tell me off, he doesn't like the smell of it. Now one of our friends prefers errr herbal stuff, he had a joint in the garden and the cats and dogs were all over him, the dogs tried to frisk his pocket where he kept his stash, the cats wanted a blow-back... Strange, you'd think a cat who finds the smell of cigs offensive would be even more offended by pot... Oddly enough inhaling pot gives me asthma attacks (found that out as a teenager, so there was never a big risk of me becoming a pot head)

I actually do not mind the smell of pot, I do mind the munchies of it tho- to which I would weigh 400 lbs.... if I used pot.

A cat can go hide- parrots tho can not. Birds are very sensitive. I mind- the smell of colognes, sprays, even some soaps. I am not asthmatic but it sure seems that way when I am near smoke.

I don't think smokers should be allowed near cats unless the cat has been well doused with acetone, gasoline, lighter fluid- some type of highly volatile accelerant. I'm not the first one with this idea- the nickname for petroleum ether in the lab is "pet ether". Of course, offering the cat a choice with a full bathtub might be the humane thing to do- but really- it's a cat, and when has anything other than killing and torturing others crossed its mind? Sam

I'll bet that in ER visits- more non-dog owners are bitten than their owners. With cats, I'll bet its the other way around. Common wisdom amongst vets seems to be that cat owner are more at risk-- "Dog bites are a community problem, affecting a larger group of people, while cat attacks tend to be a personal problem, affecting only the owner, said Dr. Kerry Muhovich, animal behavior education coordinator for the Dumb Friends League. But cat bites can be the more dangerous injury—cats’ saliva can contain particularly harmful bacteria and can cause serious infections. “I might not think of seeing a doctor for a dog bite, but I can’t think of any cat bite I wouldn’t think of seeing a doctor for,” Dr. Muhovich said. I don't understand a person's desire to torture an innocent living thing. It twists my mind up to read words like this because I just don't get such over the top cruelty - even in thoughts. And if you think all cats do is kill and torture, you don't know cats at all. It's an ignorant statement. Were you attacked as a child?
