ORIGINAL: samboct "I don't understand a person's desire to torture an innocent living thing. It twists my mind up to read words like this because I just don't get such over the top cruelty - even in thoughts. And if you think all cats do is kill and torture, you don't know cats at all. It's an ignorant statement. Were you attacked as a child?" Umm, I'd suggest that anyone having a lot of trouble distinguishing humor, fantasy and reality might want to find a different place to hang out. While I am not a cat lover, I have never tortured an animal. Incorrect suggestion. However, to me, thoughts and words put stuff out there in the world, and I'm not a fan of suggesting horrific stuff, even in humor - like I said, it's just not a way of thinking I can wrap my brain around. I'm glad you have never tortured an animal. Your "humor" suggests, however, that you find it acceptable to do so. My humor is on a more positive note, which is why I can't relate to yours. quote:
And unfortunately, I may know cats better than you- at least their effects. There have been a lot of arguments against wind turbines- one of them was that they killed birds. Well, housecats kill far more birds than wind turbines- by orders of magnitude. There was also a study done in Westchester county where avian populations were counted- in one region where domesticated felines were allowed to roam freely, and another sector where they were confined to the house. Avian populations were different by orders of magnitude. It turns out that cats enjoy killing for sport- that a single cat could kill dozens of fledglings when they were learning to fly in a single morning. Since the cat wasn't eating what it killed, it could continue to kill. So much for the notion that only humans hunt for sport! Felines prefer the cat food that we've developed to the point that they are no longer effective scavengers. In short- these animals are a disaster to an ecosystem. Sam Well I'm certainly not in competition with who knows more. Do you think dogs don't kill for sport? Ever seen a dog chase a cat, or a squirrel? They don't eat them, they just mawl them. People act like cats are the only creatures who kill things but they're not. You also suggested a cat ONLY thinks of killing. That's why I said you must not know cats. Because, about 80% of the time, my cat is rolling around, purring, snuggling, sleeping, sitting in my lap, pawing playfully at my nose, playing with his toys, etc. He's not looking around the house for something to kill. And yes, people have domesticated cats and then let them breed and breed and breed - so cats are domestic, even though some folks like to think they're still some creatures that need to go hunt and kill and enjoy themselves. I don't blame the cats, I blame the people. Why were those cats even roaming freely? Allowing that is a hazard to the cat and to the wildlife it's exposed to. Your (um, jokingly) response was to - what was it you said - "...unless the cat has been well doused with acetone, gasoline, lighter fluid- some type of highly volatile accelerant. I'm not the first one with this idea- the nickname for petroleum ether in the lab is "pet ether". Of course, offering the cat a choice with a full bathtub might be the humane thing to do- but really- it's a cat, and when has anything other than killing and torturing others crossed its mind" Yeah, I must not have a sense of humor. That's it. [;)]
