It's humans who are responsible for the overpopulation.  And, well, some of us LIKE our pets.

I don't think smokers should be allowed near cats unless the cat has been well doused with acetone, gasoline, lighter fluid- some type of highly volatile accelerant. I'm not the first one with this idea- the nickname for petroleum ether in the lab is "pet ether". Of course, offering the cat a choice with a full bathtub might be the humane thing to do- but really- it's a cat, and when has anything other than killing and torturing others crossed its mind?

I don't understand a person's desire to torture an innocent living thing. It twists my mind up to read words like this because I just don't get such over the top cruelty - even in thoughts.

And if you think all cats do is kill and torture, you don't know cats at all.  It's an ignorant statement.  Were you attacked as a child?

Maybe he is one of those... ummm.... dog people. [:'(]

Hey I love dogs.  But I don't care if he's an iguana person - that kind of talk does not come from a healthy person.

Well, I would say humans are grossly over populated too. Yet we worry about them homeless and starving, here and in other countries. Maybe we shouldnt, huh?

agreed

Umm, I'd suggest that anyone having a lot of trouble distinguishing humor, fantasy and reality might want to find a different place to hang out. While I am not a cat lover, I have never tortured an animal.

And unfortunately, I may know cats better than you- at least their effects. There have been a lot of arguments against wind turbines- one of them was that they killed birds. Well, housecats kill far more birds than wind turbines- by orders of magnitude. There was also a study done in Westchester county where avian populations were counted- in one region where domesticated felines were allowed to roam freely, and another sector where they were confined to the house. Avian populations were different by orders of magnitude. It turns out that cats enjoy killing for sport- that a single cat could kill dozens of fledglings when they were learning to fly in a single morning. Since the cat wasn't eating what it killed, it could continue to kill. So much for the notion that only humans hunt for sport! Felines prefer the cat food that we've developed to the point that they are no longer effective scavengers. In short- these animals are a disaster to an ecosystem.

I have to back up Sam there, we're friends and talk fairly often on the phone, while he makes fun of my Dobies being bullied by the 2 cats and suggests he has a word with the dogs to stop being such wusses and start eating cats, he's especially disappointed with Alf (as the alien with the same name had a fondness for cats as food) but it's just all friendly banter, he's not a cat person but I don't think he would ever harm any of them, if I had the slightest fear that he might hurt or harm one of my pets, do you think I would let him near throwing distance of my house?

The best thing is to roll a fat one and shotgun kitty.

There's nothing funnier than getting a cat high and watching them stagger around.

I'm working on the video, soon to be posted on YouTube.

Cats are the reason why you/I have not died of the plague.

Gawd I hope you are kidding.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Should smokers be allowed to smoke near cats? (5/21/2011 7:31:43 AM)

The odd thing is that they love it, I don't smoke dope, never have (apart from trying it as a teen and ending with severe asthma attacks - fun to explain in the ER) and got my cats as kittens, a few of my friends smoke recreational cigarettes, as long as they do it in the garden and not the house, I'm cool with it, but my big cat boy who dislikes all strangers (strangers are all other humans but me, friends I had for years only believe I got 2 cats as I have photographic evidence, he will not come to anybody but stay in the bedroom) will snuggle up to anybody smoking a joint in the garden. I think it must smell good to them...

Rubbish, cats died of the plague as well as rats, the flea who's the carrier of the plague makes no difference which species you are and they are a bit too small for cats to kill... Actually as a cat owner chances of dying of the plague was possibly higher, as the cats might have killed rats that were weak and infected, got the infection and plague from the rats, possibly hosted a few fleas and brought them home to their owners...

Incorrect suggestion.  However, to me, thoughts and words put stuff out there in the world, and I'm not a fan of suggesting horrific stuff, even in humor - like I said, it's just not a way of thinking I can wrap my brain around.  I'm glad you have never tortured an animal.  Your "humor" suggests, however, that you find it acceptable to do so.  My humor is on a more positive note, which is why I can't relate to yours.

Well I'm certainly not in competition with who knows more.

Do you think dogs don't kill for sport?  Ever seen a dog chase a cat, or a squirrel?  They don't eat them, they just mawl them.  People act like cats are the only creatures who kill things but they're not.

You also suggested a cat ONLY thinks of killing.  That's why I said you must not know cats.  Because, about 80% of the time, my cat is rolling around, purring, snuggling, sleeping, sitting in my lap, pawing playfully at my nose, playing with his toys, etc.  He's not looking around the house for something to kill.

And yes, people have domesticated cats and then let them breed and breed and breed - so cats are domestic, even though some folks like to think they're still some creatures that need to go hunt and kill and enjoy themselves.  I don't blame the cats, I blame the people.  Why were those cats even roaming freely?  Allowing that is a hazard to the cat and to the wildlife it's exposed to.

Your (um, jokingly) response was to - what was it you said - "...unless the cat has been well doused with acetone, gasoline, lighter fluid- some type of highly volatile accelerant. Yeah, I must not have a sense of humor.  That's it.  [;)]

Please don't. Getting animals stoned has always seemed wrong to me.

If they want to smoke weed, they can get a job and buy their own. I am stingy with my porch.

Sorry but you are wrong.     Birds also carry diseases-  we have too many of them in my region.

I think driving a car too close to a cat is more dangerous for the cat - or eating a hamburger ...

Sounds pretty kinky to me.

They would fit in completely here.

Errr my dogs chase cats, they live with 2 cats and the neutered female thinks all cats are little puppies she needs to mother and wash, heck, she'll even pick up rabbits and mother them (my cats caught one of the miniature domestic bunnies and brought it into the kitchen to "play" with it some more - you know to slowly torture it to death to keep their hunting skills up.

I love cats, hence I got 2, but they are cruel bastards and what you see as playing is keeping the hunting skills up, it's not their fault, they are born with instincts, and while I love my 2 moggies dearly, I'm under no illusion that if I would shrink to prey size, they would do the same to me and try to kill me, not out of malice but because the instinct would take over, doesn't make them evil, just makes them cats...

Well, I was just joking but you do do understand that animals seek out things that get themselves high?

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Should smokers be allowed to smoke near cats? (5/21/2011 7:51:40 AM)

This question is like asking if smokers should be allowed to smoke. I have avoided this thread until now as I am a documented smoke-o-holic currently in remission.

The numbers of people who smoke tobacco have declined drastically in this country, from 42% in 1965 to approx. to 20% these days (US figures). Many people who do still smoke want to quit.

Is it a nasty, awful habit that leads to health issues for the smoker and all (pets included) who have to breath second hand smoke? Yes. It is also a horrible addiction, and more support should be given to those who want to quit.

JMO, YMMV

Check out how the plague was transmitted, and if your cat catches a bird and gets a disease from the bird, chances are that you get it from your cat, you can get an amazing lot of things from your pets if you don't keep on top with the jabs...
