I've been absolutely certain that I have prosopagnosia ever since I read an article Oliver Sacks wrote about it for the New Yorker. I diagnosed myself with this ailment both because I think I may actually have a slight case of it and because I've always wanted to have something in common with Oliver Sacks. The information saturation of the postmodern age has produced a world full of self-diagnosing consumers! Have you ever joined the wave and done the new self-diagnosis craze? What did you diagnose yourself with? Were you right (people often are!)?

No but I've diagnosed plenty of other people.

I diagnosed myself with dyspraxia a few years ago after chatting to a child psychologist who came to my school to evaluate some students.

I had the tests done through my doctor and I do indeed have a mild case of dyspraxia. Has bugger all effect on my everyday life except for being seriously clumsy and uncoordinated.

it has, and we told you.

But your brain cannot process the information.

Which is a symptom of your kind of insanity.

no but my daughter does this every single day. Everyday she has a new illness that she found on the internet. She drives me crazy with it.

I have a strooooong belief that I might have undiagnosed ADD or ADHD (more likely ADD) but am fine with it...as I have no desire to end up on unneccessary meds

If that would have been confirmed (which looked to me rather tricky abroad) it could have been helpful at uni to improve my ability to concentrate, but in normal day life my ability to concentrate is fine enough

Apart from that I think that there is a strong possibility that I could have colitis ulcerosa which was even assumed by a doc when he x-rayed my heel, cause he did show me a line in there which, according to him, indicates chronic bowel issues...but other tests didn't confirm it for sure and in particular the doc who had referred me to get that x-ray done was very dismissive about that very logical thought (seems that fucking idiot was rather disappointed that his cancer theory hadn't panned out ).

Anyhow since 5 years I am symptom free, so I won't complain...my longest symptom free period of time I can remember...

A family friend of my parents did diagnose himself with pancreatic cancer and sadly he was right...and passed away last year...

I may have a touch of it myself. After having strokes, I noticed a marked difference in my ability to recognized people. Even ones that had been to my shop a day or so earlier. I didn't have problem with the majority of memory as a matter of fact. Kinda sucks but...

Who knows..most of us don't have enough knowledge to be able to self-diagnose..definitely not like a doctor would and even they get it wrong.

Oh heck, yeah......after all, I've lived with this body for 50 years, and know what's normal and what's not.  I know the difference between a sinus infection and strep and tonsillitis.  I knew what's normal for my period and what's not.  I knew I had thyroid problems long before the docs would finally believe me.  And this was all before the interwebz.

And Lucy, I self-diagnosed my appendicitis in 2008....didn't cheat, but I was right!  (BTW...how do you cheat on that?  It was rather obvious to me!)  The not being able to walk upright was the final clue.  Mine was sort of slow, it took almost 3 days for it to get bad enough for me to call the cab to go to the hospital.  Otherwise the only other symptom I had was a dull ache in my right side.  None of the common symptoms for me.....but I'm "spesuhl" like that!

And Phoenix, if they'd known what ADHD and ADD was 40 years ago, I'd have been diagnosed.  My son has it, and he's alot like me in so many ways it's scary!

For the record, according to the nurse I talked to, to confirm appendicitis, just jump up and down....apparently, that's the sure sign.

I was in the middle of my nursing training Soul, id been off colour for a day or so , then the last night, I was in agonizing pain for about six hours, managed to hobble to ER and said to the doc, I think its my appendix, he did a finger in the bum test and after he scraped me off the ceiling, he said, shes right, ...I was in the OR ten minutes later:)

When I was in my 20's & first started working in hospitals, I diagnosed myself with something awful nearly daily. And I was never right. The capper came when I went to work on the Neuro floor & discovered a lump at the base of my skull: surely brain cancer, right??? lmao at myself. But I was raised by a hypochondriac who was always deathly ill with something or another & whose children never had anything wrong with them medically. Apparently hypochondriacs don't like to share the spotlight.

In the late 70's I self-diagnosed a gallstone. The Dr agreed, but I passed it before the tests & have never had another attack. Oh & a few times I self-diagnosed pregnancies with accuracy. Except for that last one when I had absolutely no clue!!

One day at work, I thought that I was having worse cramps than I'd ever had. I couldn't stand up straight & the ibuprofen I was eating like candy wasn't touching the pain. I finished the day, since it was just cramps, right? It wasn't even during a period but I was convinced it was just abnormally hard cramping. When I talked to the Dr at my next appt, & described what I'd felt, she told me that I'd had an ovarian cyst burst. She made me promise that I'd contact her if it ever happened again because it could have caused peritonitis.

Then there was the time that I broke my wrist & kept insisting it wasn't broken. That lump didn't even convince me. It turned out to be a bad enough break that the Orthopod wanted to take me to surgery & pin it.

So I don't think I'm very good at this. LOL

owie, Lucy.....mine was just mild compared to what I've seen and heard from others who had it.  In fact, they just pumped me with some morphine and I laid around til about 7PM for the surgery.  I was more bored than anything else...no cell signal, and I didn't think to bring any books.

My boss was pissed because I called a cab to go to the hospital, and not an ambulance.  My mode of transpo at the time was my scooter, and I didn't think it'd be a good idea to try getting there on that!

When my sis had it at 16, she was violently ill and in serious pain.  It came on her in literally 45 minutes.  They barely got her to the OR in time......

I diagnosed myself as one of those BDSM perverts.

Sure enough, it turned out to be right.

ADD and GAD, but both run in the family so it wasn't any great thing.
And sinus infection. If there's pressure when you lean forward, if it hurts if you press above or below the eye. But I've had that enough that it's no big deal to recognize when I'm getting it again.

I was lucky I was "living-in" at the hospital and they took excellent care of me as a member of staff.
I actually dated the anesthesiologist who seemed to take great pleasure in telling people he had seen parts of me no-one else would ever see.
