I don`t see anywhere in those post you calling bush insulting names.

There was a real world class ass-wipe who recently said that leftists were partly responsible for Stalin`s,China`s,etc. killings.

That`s kinda insulting.

Now it is guilt by association[;)]

I dislike speaking in generalities about people on the left and people on the right. I find that much more mentally juvenile than calling a political leader (one who started an unnecessary war) names. When we start stereotyping and demonizing an entire group of people because they disagree with us politically it is the first step in the process of dehumanizing them.

You see it in Sanity's posts often... leftists this, liberals that, socialists this, progressives that. His entire goal seems to be reducing those who think differently than him to being considered a lower form of life. Frankly, I find this much more disturbing than mere political disagreement.

In the real world we have to interact with people who think differently from us. I just know too many people who are on the right to want to paint them all with a broad brush in ways that make them seem like they are all evil, etc... I don't think they are less than me for thinking differently. It might change whether or not I wanted to marry the person, but it would not keep me from befriending them.

Some people need to feel a certain reverence and respect towards their leaders, and that is how they feel. Personally speaking, I am a civilian, and those who started this country didn't want us to have to back out of doorways when leaving a room in which our leader is, they didn't want us to kneel to him, either. If someone wants to feel awed by a person whom they do not know just because of a title, go them, but I am not joining them in that feeling.

Real life is not television I’m afraid…In real life we often call people names...Obama does it…. Bush did it…Nixon was nasty at it. I even on occasion call people names but in private. The left on mics often tell the tale.

But…what does this name calling really mean? For most, me included, anger or frustration will inspire creative descriptive speech but it is not really personal. It is just a fleeting thought that comes to mind but leaves just as quickly…harmless and not really meant to be disparaging…most of the time.

It is just the way most of us communicate for better or worse.

Butch

Sanity -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/22/2011 9:21:21 AM)

Referring you leftists as leftists is not "dehumanizing" you, silly! [:D]

Dehumanizing is what youre doing when you refer to someone as a chimp etc.

"Warmongers" "neocons" "rethuglicans" etc

I use the word "leftists" because youre not all Democrats, or socialists, or progressives, or communists, or anarchists... but you are all leftists.

Its purely a descriptive term as is "conservative" "rightist" or "right winger" etc

It is true, julia. Leftists have murdered countless millions in the old Soviet bloc, in Vietnam, in China, wherever they have won exclusive power.

Why do you try to deny this?

Absolute truth.

Also your side helped Che and Castro.

And Mugabe

And Ghadaffi (remember untill 3 months ago he was a valiant Socialist Revolutionary fighting AGAINST Western Imperialism)

and Chavez.

luckydawg -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/22/2011 9:41:08 AM)

Sannity, and they denied these crimes as they happened, and justified them for being anti Capitalists after the fact.

Stalin gave the people Universal Health Care after all, just like Castro.

Rightists murdered millions of people too, your point?

In my mind no side, rather left or right, as the market cornered on authoritarian totalitarianism. By saying "leftists" do this, you are reducing leftists to this position.

I am a leftist. I am against censorship. I am against governments interjecting themselves in the religious practices of their populations. I am against the government interjecting themselves into my body. I am against governments creating an unfair advantage for venture capitalism vs people being able to create markets at the local level. I am against militarism.... etc etc etc....

I do not go around claiming all rightists are to be painted with the Nazi stripe, even though they were rightists... to do such is unfair and untrue... most rightists would not support what Nazis supported, even though they are often xenophobic and ethnocentric, and support international military interventionism

Louve00 -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/22/2011 9:44:54 AM)

I completely agree with you Sunshine Miss.  Intentional name calling just for the sake of insulting someone disengages me from the topic at hand.  (I say intentional, because for an entire school year I called my daughters assistant principle Mr Sherbert, but that's because I thought it was his name)  He knew it was because of my ignorance and never took it as an insult (but I did humbly apologize when I found out the proper pronunciation of his name!)  It seems about half of the posters in this thread didn't get your point.  What's worse is, in not being able to comprehend your OP, they turned it into a right/left debate and went to look up posts of people who have insulted intentionally (even though those people who insulted intentionally admitted to it).

Now, I do admit to getting sarcastic with people who like to name call.  And do admit, I've even taken it off topic as people go about intentionally trying to show us they don't know how to spell.  But for the most part, I've found better things to do than watch bad examples from people who know better.

There are a few who can hold a conversation with you whether you hold different views or not.  But not many, which really, being we are all adults, is a disappointment (to me anyway)

When we invaded Iraq I had never been as angry at my government as I was on that day. I am STILL angry about it. I cannot believe the lives that were squandered, the money spent, the wasted good will.... all for nothing but lies. I never really got into calling names until that day. I am not ashamed at being angry over it. I say if you aren't angry about that, you aren't paying attention.

Open Letter to Pols / Religion Forum:

Years ago I watched the West Wing television show. I found it smart, insightful, and educational. I loved being able to see the process of politics. When they had Anslie Hayes on there, I learned (finally) about Republicans in a way that made sense. I felt like I could at last see their perspective. That show - whether I agreed with everything or not - was terrific.

I'm going to take exception to the premiss leading  up to your point. I watched West Wing once. I found it to be ridiculous and absurd . Some time after that I recall seeing Dick Morris, I think it was, comment that the show was not even close to reality.  Educational ? Really ?

If you want to talk about Iran however, and Jimmy Carter...

juliaoceania -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/22/2011 10:21:35 AM)

We could talk about your absurd notion that any human being using an ideology when they are convinced of its rightness (and I that is not intended to be a pun) can do abhorrent things as a result. People justify all sorts of immorality because they are convinced of the "evil" of the other side.

Posts like yours are the first step towards the demonization, dehumanization, and the rationalization that is used to justify inhumanity... all because someone believes differently than you.

juliaoceania -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/22/2011 10:23:22 AM)

Dehumanization is to make somebody less human by taking away his or her individuality, the creative and interesting aspects of his or her personality, or his or her compassion and sensitivity towards others.[citation needed] Dehumanization may be directed by an organization (such as a state) or may be the composite of individual sentiments and actions, as with some types of de facto racism. State-organized dehumanization has been directed against perceived racial or ethnic groups, nationalities (or "foreigners" in general), religious groups, genders, minorities of various sexual orientations (e.g., homosexuals), disabled people as a class, economic (e.g., the homeless) and social classes, and many other groups.
