ORIGINAL: samboct To the OP As someone who had certainly used derogatory names for politicians on these boards and in person, let me offer a somewhat different opinion on the reasons for name calling. 1) Lack of respect for the person, regardless of their office. Respect can't be demanded- has to be earned. I learned that one in grade school- I wish a few more people would remember it. 2) This often has more to do with perceived lack of morals or ethics than honest disagreement. As an example- I utterly despise Ronald Reagan- probably more than any politician alive today. A big chunk of this is because Erich Bloch in his administration said we need scientists- and yet the administration was busy cutting funding for basic research. As a consequence me and most of my friends didn't get jobs in the profession that we'd trained a decade or so for. I'm also furious about his policies and his distortions about the "left wing main stream media" so now we have the Fox Propaganda Channel, which does a great job of making sure no facts are freely released, but must be distorted first if not outright ignored. Or what constitutes "news" are what would properly be classified as either scandal sheets or yellow journalism. So I don't admire the man- I utterly despise him and what he did to this country. And his taking credit for single handedly destroying the Soviet Union gave very short shrift to all those people who donned uniform and manned the strategic bombers, submarines and missile silos for decades prior. I generally refer to Ronald Reagan as Ronnie Rayguns. GWB the first- don't like the guy- but don't call him names. GWB the 2nd- don't recall ever calling him monkey boy, but did call him Shrub on occasion. I have similar attitudes as Julia- not to mention I still don't agree with the elections. But I'm not that angry with the guy- he was in over his head and I don't think he's all that smart. McCain- don't recall using anything insulting about the guy- his service record speaks volumes, as does his recent break with the Republicans on the utility of torture and the need for a debate. So I can disagree with they guy- but still respect him. Same goes for Romney- but doesn't go for Newt or Boehner or Cantor. So it seems that some of us use name calling when we not only disagree with the person- we don't respect his actions- generally on a moral or ethical basis. Cheers, Sam Maybe it is your lack of logic that caused you to not get hired as a scientist. Reagan is dead, has been for years. He never took credit for single handedly taking down the USSR. He was exactly correct about the media, and the existance of a News channel whose editorials you dislike in no way makes, " sure no facts are freely released, but must be distorted first if not outright ignored. "
