Oh, tell me about it: Nixon, Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot are all three leftists? That's spreading the term so wide it's meaningless...

I believe you will get a better idea what someone is really like here on CM then when you meet them in person. There is no reason for them to hold back their real self when on line. In real life face to face they may not show you who they are and what they really think.

I think you could well be wrong on that one. People are just as capable as putting on a false front on the internet as they are irl.
We've got a few of these, after all:

I think sometimes you can get a skewed picture of people online, the medium can exaggerate the stances people seem to be making, and that sometimes our written communication style varies from the way we are in the real world.

I am gregarious, for example, and people who have met me in person from only seeing my writing or talking to me in voice chat have often been surprised how gregarious and fun loving I am. My voice will often soften what I am saying, too...

No, I would definitely not completely judge a person by what they post on the internet, especially when it is a heated conversation with others that they cannot actually see or hear. This medium can take away that human element, and therefore sometimes people post harshly because they cannot see the impact of their words...

That is why I wouldn't hold a grudge here, I think most people see me as pixels, and sometimes I see them the same way

Has a false front ever fooled you?...What people say on line describes them over time...It is their true self...unless what a person looks like is all that counts...and heh I've lost weight since that picture was taken.

I do think it takes time to judge anyone...on or off line. I know a lot about you, at least your feelings on religion and politics, and I don't think, if we were to meet as strangers, I would learn your thoughts as quickly.

Wasn't aimed at you, Butch. I was just observing that there's a few internet tough guys (mostly guys) on here who are almost certainly presenting a badass image they wouldn't be pulling on people who might hit them. If somebody is willing to get into flaming matches by coming out with something that they'd never have the balls to say to somebody irl, then it isn't the real them at all, it's posturing bullshit.

Apparently he can't grasp that the bigger the box gets and the more that's crammed into it, the less definitive the label becomes.

To the OP

As someone who had certainly used derogatory names for politicians on these boards and in person, let me offer a somewhat different opinion on the reasons for name calling.

1) Lack of respect for the person, regardless of their office. Respect can't be demanded- has to be earned. I learned that one in grade school- I wish a few more people would remember it.
2) This often has more to do with perceived lack of morals or ethics than honest disagreement.

As an example- I utterly despise Ronald Reagan- probably more than any politician alive today. A big chunk of this is because Erich Bloch in his administration said we need scientists- and yet the administration was busy cutting funding for basic research. As a consequence me and most of my friends didn't get jobs in the profession that we'd trained a decade or so for.

I'm also furious about his policies and his distortions about the "left wing main stream media" so now we have the Fox Propaganda Channel, which does a great job of making sure no facts are freely released, but must be distorted first if not outright ignored. Or what constitutes "news" are what would properly be classified as either scandal sheets or yellow journalism.

So I don't admire the man- I utterly despise him and what he did to this country. And his taking credit for single handedly destroying the Soviet Union gave very short shrift to all those people who donned uniform and manned the strategic bombers, submarines and missile silos for decades prior.

I generally refer to Ronald Reagan as Ronnie Rayguns.

GWB the first- don't like the guy- but don't call him names. GWB the 2nd- don't recall ever calling him monkey boy, but did call him Shrub on occasion. I have similar attitudes as Julia- not to mention I still don't agree with the elections. But I'm not that angry with the guy- he was in over his head and I don't think he's all that smart.

McCain- don't recall using anything insulting about the guy- his service record speaks volumes, as does his recent break with the Republicans on the utility of torture and the need for a debate. So I can disagree with they guy- but still respect him.

Same goes for Romney- but doesn't go for Newt or Boehner or Cantor.

So it seems that some of us use name calling when we not only disagree with the person- we don't respect his actions- generally on a moral or ethical basis.

Cheers,

Sam

Go ahead and pretend that I wrote anything like Nixon and Kissenger were leftists

Its amusing how many leftists will grab onto any sort of silliness and make believe that they have a point...

Neither the words Nixon nor Kissinger appear in that post, Moon.

Maybe it is your lack of logic that caused you to not get hired as a scientist.

Reagan is dead, has been for years.

He never took credit for single handedly taking down the USSR.

He was exactly correct about the media, and the existance of a News channel whose editorials you dislike in no way makes, " sure no facts are freely released, but must be distorted first if not outright ignored. "

Oh, so Hanoi Jane was responsible for the retreat from Vietnam all by herself, was she? I must have missed the election where they let her take over as President.

Sanity are you actually arguing with a troll like Moon? What a waste of time.

You clearly meant the anti war movement which aided the Commie forces in South East Asia, and Hamstrung the elected Gov of the USA, Nixon and Kissenger.

Everyone could tell that is what was meant.

All the leftist can really do is make up stuff and argue against stuff never said. that is very clear.

let Moon play dumb if he likes, it is evidence he can't refute what you said.
