Owner59 -> Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 7:23:30 AM)

There is another side to private gun ownership.

All the damage, death and loss due to having them in the house.

http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2011/01/man_shoots_himself_in_foot_in.html

This flip side to ownership rights should also get some attention.

TheHeretic -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 7:58:10 AM)

A guy shot himself in the foot. Isn't that what happens to you, every time you get ahead of the talking points emails?

Guns are tools to make living things dead. They need to be properly handled. Gun safety a very reasonable subject to address, but nowhere near a "flip side" to the right to bear arms.

Real0ne -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 8:05:37 AM)

nice troll post

so then the moral of your story is to take guns away from cops.

If he wouldn't have shot him self in the foot, he woulda fallen down stairs or some such.

Morons will be morons. Nothing to do with gun laws, except maybe culls the herd a bit and that aint a bad thing.

LadyPact -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 8:24:04 AM)

OK.  Accidental self-inflicted wound.

I have to agree on the assessment that they guy might not have been too bright.  The story does mention that the guy tried to lie and say an intruder shot him.  If he wasn't smart enough to know that was going to be figured out, I'm guessing he's not Einstein in the first place.

If I cut Myself with a knife in the kitchen, should we ban those?

These trolls come up with ridiculous premises

crap... I would totally be out of a job! Actually, I managed to cut myself with a potato once (no, really, I did. It was pretty kick ass actually), maybe ban those too.

BKSir -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 9:03:05 AM)

In 1997, 32,436 deaths resulted from firearm-related injuries, making such injuries the second leading cause of injury mortality in the United States after motor-vehicle-related incidents (1). Also in 1997, an estimated 64,207 persons sustained nonfatal firearm-related injuries and were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments

Okay, that's around 100,000 people that year. I'll admit that's a rather large number.

It's actually slightly above 200,000 in 2008.

But, the number of knife related injuries for 1994... 472,201
Reported.

Please, don't take my knives away...

FullCircle -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 9:06:45 AM)

FR

Probably the wider point in the op is that 'this moron' as people put it passed all the required sanity tests that the pro gun lobby bang on about but still inflicted a gunshot wound on himself. The only conclusion to draw from this and other incidents where some nutjob goes on the rampage is that the mental health checks, if they exists at all, don't work well enough.

However we don't know from this link if it was a legally owned firearm I suppose. However there was no mention of him being arrested for having an illegal firearm. I'm not really familiar with the inconsistencies in state laws regarding such things. i.e. some states probably let you win guns in a lucky dip whereas with others you need to pass a test to demonstrate fitness.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 9:15:15 AM)

How the fuck do you shoot yourself?   That takes a real idiot.

FullCircle -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 9:19:02 AM)

Sounds like he did it deliberately either to frame someone or for insurance perhaps.

DesFIP -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 9:19:13 AM)

A guy I've known since his teens, a good and careful hunter shot himself one time. He was up in a tree stand, had a sudden call from Mother Nature and didn't take the time to put the safety on the handgun before descending. Shot himself in the thigh.

But lying to the cops about it? Now that takes stupidity.

just to show what troll post the OP is, let ban fucking doctors!

National Medical Malpractice Statistics If you have suffered or are suffering from medical malpractice you may be feeling alone but medical malpractice has become a larger problem than most people realize and than medical professionals want to admit. Latest statistics actually show that probably around 225,000 people die every year due to some form of medical malpractice, and that is an uncomfortable number for patients and health care professionals. Sadly even such great numbers of fatalities have not brought about the investigative measures that actually are needed to decrease the numbers of deaths relating to medical malpractice.

talking to the cops.  even smart attorneys refrain from talking with cops even in regard to ,minor traffic issues because you put in a turnip and out comes a mushroom.

words evaporate and transmutate

In most situations you have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

This is what they say.[:D]

I was always to not take off the safety until you were actually ready to shoot.

It was drilled  into head at a young age to treat every gun as if it is loaded.  I knew we kept no loaded guns in the house but the first I thing I did if I took out the case was unload it.

If I put it back and went back 10 minutes later I unloaded it again even though I new perfectly well it was never loaded.

My Dad taught me well.

So what kind of attention would you suggest ?   Let me guess, ban guns, outlaw guns, register guns, special gun locks, smart guns, require a masters degree in gun safety for a permit to own a gun, require them to be kept in the garage maybe. What pray I ask ???

Did you watch the second video?

The one RO posted?

First, he was giving a lecture on gun safety.

Second, he was bragging about how professional he was in the use of guns.

Sorry, but it just doesn't get any funnier than that.

Moonhead -> RE: Man Shoots Self With Own Gun (5/22/2011 2:37:20 PM)

That doesn't answer the important question this foolishness raises, though: would it have been better or worse if he'd winged himself with somebody else's gun?
