Dont count on that.

I was under the impression it was commodities gambling... um er... trading, and speculating that caused the higher food prices

The single most signigicant thing that has effected food prices in the past few years has been the price of corn. At least on the meat side. One of the effects of more ethanol in gas.

Really??  So you saying Oil prices going from $80 a barrel to over $130 a barrel was insignificant.

Gas at the pump is 10% ethanol.  I am sure an increase of even a few dollars a bushel overrides the price of oil.

You want to stick with this story?  How about providing something in the way of facts.

Well, corn is high and it was high the last time that we faced obnoxious oil prices, but the big Oil companies control the ethanol companies and if anyone remembers they got caught like a motherfucker and had to start backpeddling on Ws watch when there was no more disparity than there was in e85 and regular.

Get the investors out of commodities, and everything will drop - gas, corn, wheat, coffee, cocoa, you name it.

But hey, even the 'elite' have to put food on the table. So we let it continue.

fl, they aren't mutually exclusive.

Orion is right--corn is heavily supported politically, and we pay for it.

Commodities speculation in the wake of a flat stock market has also contributed heavily to food and oil spikes.

And yes, oil spikes affect food prices greatly, from transportation to fertilizer to running a farm.

We also have a global food crunch right now. The U.S. feels it less because there isn't a lot of actual food in our processed food.

The price of corn production and all food production is directly tied to energy prices.

The last time world energy prices spiked, the cost of rice doubled. Most 3rd world folks made just enough money(a buck s day on average) to eat.

When their money bought only half the rice(the main staple food),hunger and desperation caused food riots.

The phenomenon of vegetables/fresh-food prices going up steadily as the price of processed, fatty unhealthy foods has been going down steadily, is a whole other discussion.

Did I say that? Maybe a quote would help.

Do your own research. A few years ago it was 2.75 a bushel, compared to about 7.40 a bushel now. Corn is used heavily in the feeding of livestock. There are other factors, but that has been one of the largest in the last few years.

If you look you will even find an article by a meat producer outlining the cost of corn, and showing the increase in price, and not just for his company either.

Politics has it's hand in it as well, so you have that "X" factor thrown in.

LOL (I actually laughed because it is a topic of discussion around here).

Yeah, that corn stuff is better for us, all the documentaion proves it. (sarcasm)

Now add into that, corn production was down at harvest season last year.

Kind of like our strawberries that actually have taste and no red food dye on our hands.

We buy fresh fruits and veggies, and why I saw the prices going up over the last few years.

That ethanol production affects corn prices to any degree is at best a myth/theory,at worse, big oil propaganda. The market is global. As is the energy market.

Corn and corn product market is way to complicated to say one factor, one tiny fraction of the corn market, ethanol in gas, is why food prices are high.

I also don`t buy anyone selling a "fair tax".Not anymore anyway.I listened at first to the different forms "fair tax" plans over the years and it usually boils down to middle/working class folks and the poor paying more with upper income earners paying less.

It`s usually gimmickry designed to sound great in a pitch."Everyone pays less tax" or some sort of bullshit like that.

Corn used for food and for feed + for ethanol  increased demand  =  increased cost use of ethanol can not help but raise the price of corn.

I just checked a few sites, USDA, and others, they still show that ethanol production has effected corn prices for the last few years. The cattle associations are very concerned about it, and none of these sites were owned by big oil companies.

http://www.cattlenetwork.com/cattle-news/Corn-market-continues-to-focus-on-production-prospects-122458249.html?ref=249

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/datablog/2010/jan/22/us-corn-production-biofuel-ethanol

This is just a couple pulled up in a quick search.

It seems high food costs have several causes, so the lower gas prices aren't going to impact them so much

Funny cause I remember that being proof that Bush was owned by the oil companies.  You also have to remember that it was only up there for a few days.  Until this time

Would you rather pay higher food prices or give that money to bin-laden`s financiers?

That link is undeniable.
