WTF?!!!

"There are no hard data on discrimination against the unemployed. But there have been reports from across the country of companies' making clear in job listings that they are not interested in people who are out of work. "

This has been known for quite awhile, it is nothing new. It is hard to find a job unless you already have one. They tell you this in resume writing books, etc. They suggest you take classes if you are unemployed these days so that you don't appear flaky with gaps in your employment.

It isn't fair, but I do not think it is a protected form of discrimination.

I understand that the gaps in employment is an important thing, but with some very qualified people unemployed right now, it seems illogical to just dismiss them based upon being currently unemployed. One of my neighbors who is a heavy equipment operator, just took a job as a general laborer so that it will show him as employed. The problem will be getting time off to go to interviews and such.

How do you correct unemployment if companies refuse to hire the unemployed?

You create incentives to hire them

Yup, I knew that already, and even here in the UK, is is at work, no one wants to hire unemployed unless they can get them real cheap and abuse them, let alone those who have been out of work for a long time due to medical problems.

I live in a town which only this week shed 450 jobs, and it is a poor area of the country, so that's 450 people joining the job queues along with them that are already there, and precious few jobs coming along. Yet we have a vicious government in place who is causing the near villifying of the unemployed and forcing them back to work, except there is no work, it is not being created, everyone is downsizing or moving abroad, the former being the claim made by the company that recently shed 450 jobs.

This place used to be a hive of industry, oh sure it still has the shipyards, a fishing fleet and all the associated services, but the staff has been massively cut, or put out to tender, with employees commuting in from up country, sod the local workforce.

Orion,

What julia said...nothing new.

Consider...you're an employer. Your work isn't social justice, but conducting your business. So you look for someone steadily employed even as others were laid off. Not hard to see why employers might see this as a better bet.

Best bet? Network. 85% of job openings are never advertised anywhere. If you've got some connection to someone the employer knows, all you have to do is show how you're qualified and reliable (vs. competing against all other comers).

Thats why its a non-issue. When the economy evenutally rebounds, despite this administration's best efforts, there will be too many jobs to fill for unemployment in this economy to be much of a factor.

These days the people who hire new employees are not necessarily very bright. Large companies have usually certain guidelines they follow. The job-seekers should correctly guess what a company wish list is, and then accommodate their resume to fit the criteria. In many cases, for example, too much education is very negative point. Also age is often an issue. General role: want a gob, cheat on your resume and during an interview shamelessly. You can not change the system.

ROFL. Apparently youve never been in a position to hire people. Those that you describe, if they even get through the door, are so transparent they dont get past a preliminary live screening.

Yes, I take the criticism. It is not easy to make totally false impression. It depends what kind of jobs are we talking about. The majority of jobs created these days are low wage low skill jobs everybody can do. McDonalds hired 50,000 people recently and there was total over 1 million applicants.

I really hate to agree with Fellow.

But he's partly right--I've seen blanket policies flatly/blindly followed, such as "must have two year accounting degree," and four-year accounting degree people told they weren't qualified.

There are different types of liars.. those who lie about their qualifications, those who lie about their experience, and those who lie about both. It is pretty hard to swing lying about your qualifications, but people who lie about their experience are much more believable.

This policy is really biting me in the ass, and not in a fun way. I have applied to around 1500-2000 places and only had two interviews. I have worked hard my whole life, and the last 2 years have been hell without a job. It destroys your life.

That people can lie about their experience, but their qualifications are fairly much their qualifications... you can't fake what you don't know

That's a pretty round number. You apply to 3-4 places daily? Where do you find them all?

I think it's time to change your tactics, no?
