What were you doing in SoDAK?  Cuz I cant believe they are gonna have really spiffy airports, Huron or Pierre or?

I like small airports, it is really easy to get in and out of them... FSD is quaint.

Edited to add, I was visiting a friend that lives there.

I don't know about the world, but if you were giving Canada an enema, St. John, New Brunswick is where you would insert the nozzle....

Now before anybody starts screaming at me, I'm a New Brunswicker, and both sides of my family are from in and around St, John. So I'm allowed to say that. {It's like blacks using the N-word}.

Oh yeah, so as to keep on topic, the St. John airport is a dicky little thing with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Funny you would say that.  I seem people say it was a NWO thing.   Heavily.   hmmm.

I'd rather fly into DEN than ATL or LAX

although... I do miss Stapleton...

Stapleton was nice. I went through there once with my brother on a business trip to Calif.
The beer was ice cold and you could still smoke in the bars in those days. (80's)

windchymes -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 12:42:07 PM)

I like the smaller airports, too, like Atlantic City, Akron-Canton in Ohio, & Fargo, ND. Too bad you can't afford to fly in and out of them, the damn rates are always so much higher.

I like the Minneapolis airport because of the cool shops and stores. Dulles has spiffed itself up quite nicely over the past year. The underground trains are running instead of those stupid "people movers" and if you print your boarding pass at home and don't check a bag, you can arrive at the airport way less than an hour before your flight, it's nice. Right through security to the gates.

The Aruba airport was great, simply because it was in Aruba, lol.

dreamofthemoon -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 5:29:32 PM)

Ok, let's see...

Honolulu was nice as far as i remember. i'll have to remember to laugh with the wind next time i'm there, sunny. [;)] [:D]

i haven't flown into/out of LAX or O'Hare in ages, but i remember them being helluva busy.

i like John Wayne airport, nice and cozy. Being that it's not far of a drive from where we live now is good, too. [:D] And there's a McD's for a snack/juice/diet coke before your flight.

i could spend a good amount of time there just people watching/riding the people movers and taking it all in (if i'm not crunched for time) at the Denver airport. Love the big windows, so much sunshine gets in in the daylight! Plus, there's the chocolate shop there.

Des Moines is another small one, but nice.

popeye1250 -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 10:12:27 PM)

Charlotte (CLT) is a nice airport. I flew into and out of it last summer on my trip to New England to see family.
As we pulled in from Myrtle Beach all you could see were "U.S. Airways" jets. That must be their home base or a big hub.
And the inside looked like it was very new. There were all kinds of restaurants with whatever you wanted to eat.
And it did look like U.S. Airways owned that whole section of the airport.
Also Charlotte is an international airport with flights to Europe.
Anyone been there?

Among the worst airports in Europe I'd count Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Heathrow (getting better but still, such a pain in the neck and they manage to lose luggage all the time) Manchester Airport (whoever picked the carpets must be colour blind), Charles De Gaulle in Paris, they seem to have homeless people there by the truck load and know about it, so security will actually warn you that they will try to pick your pockets or steal your luggage, if your flight is delayed, it's not great. Paris Beauvais is also pretty bad, had a flight cancelled and decided to wait for the next which was in the morning and thought no point in going back to Paris and spend a lot of money for 3 hours of sleep in a hotel, I just stay at the airport and read - ha! They close the airport after 11 pm (and kick you out) and you're then in the middle of nowhere... Moscow is also horrific, you can feel your lungs blackening just from 2nd hand smoke plus pickpockets everywhere.
I totally agree w/ you about C. De Gaulle. The worst flying experience of my life happened there (caused by the U-bahn in Munich shutting down for 1.5 hours). And I agree w/ you about Munich, too. Franz-Joseph Strauss Flughaven is well-laid out, clean, and one can get off the plane, go buy an MVV pass, collect one's baggage, go down and catch the S-bahn Linea 1 or 8 and be either in town or at the Wsetbahnhof all in about an hour. Of course, I love Munich.

Hate Dallas-Ft. Worth. Templehof in Berlin was very cool before they closed it. Had one of those stylized eagles on the building, and was right in town. Was where they did the Berlin Airlift.

Kodiak (Alaska) has an 8 ft. tall stuffed Kodiak Bear in the (tiny) lobby. Pretty cool. I think ATL is a good airport, mostly because I like to ride the train (I'm a subway freak).

Salt Lake City has some great views out the windows. Mexico City sucks mostly because if one is connecting from International to domestic, you have to walk to the other terminal. San Juan P.R. is kind of sucky, too. San Juan Costa Rica was average.

Don't care for Heathrow. SFO is nicer than Oakland or San Jose, IMO. Maui was good.

Dulles is a pain in the ass to get to. O'Hare, LaGuardia, JFK, Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, and Rochester are all outdated. So is LAX. Sea-Tac isn't bad at all. Anchorage is another one with good views of the mountains.

Only been to Frankfurt once; kind of a weird layout, but easy to get to from the Rheingau wine country.

Brussels is also outdated. Schipol is a good airport, and one can buy anything there. Easy ground transport connections, like Munich.

I don't remember much about San Diego, CA, or Malaga, Spain, or Reagan (D.C.), or Orlando (except it was clean), or Tampa, or Miami, or Corpus Christi TX, or Logan. Minneapolis was OK.

Faves are München, Amsterdam, ATL (except for all the people), Schipol, SFO, and I guess Salt Lake City.

I'm going to third Charles De Gaulle as terrible. No signs for the gate numbers? Really? You have to wander around reading every sign board hoping to catch it at the right time and to find the one which actually pertains to your flight (that's if you are actually in the correct wing to start with and it really helps if you speak French - I don't.)

Love Schiphol (you can gamble there but buyer beware!) It's clean and the duty free is huge and you can actually find seats comfortable enough to sleep in while you're waiting for your connectings. (You can find food there that doesn't suck, too, but you have to look for it.)

Lisbon is the easiest to get through customs (but they lose a LOT of luggage), Frankfurt the hardest (they never lost our luggage though) Psst.. Frankfurt - The war is over guys.. and I didn't start it, so don't take it out on me for crying out loud - and the food is just crap.

Love Aer Lingus as an airline (cushy, comfortable seats) but the airport in Dublin is just meh for me. (Make sure you book an actual Aer Lingus flight and NOT KLM!)

I can't remember if it's Gatwick or Heathrow .. but I hate one of them! They have these steel guards up that you can't fit through with your luggage cart and when you are running to catch another flight having to unload that pisser, take the stairs down and then haul it around is a major pain in the ass. (Don't make our mistake.. flight IN to Gatwick, connecting flight leaves from Heathrow so you have to fork out more bux for the bus to take you from Gatwick to Heathrow and, no, I never used THAT travel agent again!)

Madrid.. airport is okay but subway system is absolutely amazing and even easier to navi than the system in Paris.

Azores.. take a boat if you need to get there because taking a plane is on the wrong side of a cost/benefit ratio. Just freakin' scary.

Funchal is beautiful.. wonderful little airport but the way the plane has to approach the airport, you just swear you're going to crash into the mountain. lol Faro's a great little airport, too, and no mountains to crash into! :D

I don't like Linnate.. too small & dirty and don't like Malpensa because it's so far, looooooooooong ass lines and costs an arm and a leg to get to Milan by cab but it is pretty easy to navi there. We never took a flight into Rome, but if you get the chance to bullet train from north to south, go first class.. it's just a few Euros more and the trip is soooooooooo worth it!)

I can't remember the name of the airport in Switzerland, but it was charming and when we were there they had the craziest, coolest car show going on so we had something to do while waiting for our connecting.

Lots more, but that's what I recall from the top of my head at 1:20 AM.

Domestically, I can't think of a major airport that I haven't landed in sometime in my life.. way to many to remember or document so will just say, research before you fly.. it will make life easier.

DesFIP -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 4:41:51 AM)

Dallas was worse than Atlanta and that's saying something.

Schipol used to have great shopping, haven't been in years.

For NYC, in addition to flying in/out of Islip McArthur on Long Island, you can come into Newburgh/Stewart. About the same travel time to then get into the city. But in three seasons, you first can take the ferry over the river to the train station.

pahunkboy -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 7:38:28 AM)

My last house was right in the flight path of a tiny private airport.    Weekends were bad for noise.    Throw in the race track nearby - and  it could be jarring.

The code lady-  just looked at me funny when I complained about brown goop that falls from those planes and ickies up the house.     (not bird poo--  plane poo)

The new planes are no where near as noisy as the old ones.

I would not buy a house in the path of a plane.  I would rather be on a busy street.   (and that is an amazing comment, cause I hate the busy street)

GreedyTop -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 7:42:46 AM)

when I lived in the ATL area back in the early 90s, the house was in the flight path of Dobbins AFB, literally off the end of the runway.. it was WAY cool to see the Navy fighters (F15s??)  fly over.. often we could see into the canopies!!

In Tampa, I was along the flight path to TIA.  Not really a problem exceprt when the HEAVY heavies went right overhead and rattled my windows while I was trying to sleep.  Not nearly as much fun as the fighters..LOL

Here, I get train horns.

pahunkboy -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 7:45:32 AM)

GT-   I would like to ring the train guys neck!!   3 AM and he lays on that horn  for several minutes.  Some towns set up quiet zones....  but not this one.

GreedyTop -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 7:47:12 AM)

I'm at work then... I get the morning trains.  Not only freight, but Amtrak too.  I dont mind too much, since the tracks are about 1.5 miles away.

I'd rather have the fighters right overhead, though...

PdxJ -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/7/2011 7:53:00 AM)

Portland Oregon for landings - you drop in from over the mountains and have a fantastic view of the Columbia Gorge and river.

Take offs - I'd say Boston but I'm not sure if they use the same airport as they did 20 years ago. When I flew out of there the runway ended and the plane dropped like it was coming off an aircraft carrier and all I could see was ocean under us and around us. I was so sure I was about to die. lol!

I've never flown in to Aspen, Colorado but I hear the landings are breathtaking.
