I had heard this before, it is not a new assertion for me...

So what you are saying is that EVERYONE is wrong, so Sarah Palin's making fast and loose with our "myths" isn't a flubbing of at the very least our imagined past.

I haven't weighed in on the accuracy of the historical events, because I do not know if anyone knows what they were. I kinda feel the same way about arguing over Jesus... at the same time I wouldn't weigh in on the Gospels and say they said things that were radically different from what they record (whether they are legend or not)

A moral person wouldn't resort to such things. Morality and intelligence don't necessarily go hand in hand. Sometimes killing your opposition might be the smart thing to do... just not the moral thing.

I stand rebuked.

I just think that being moral is smarter and creates less hassles and costs less.

He isn't historically famous and referred to in school as the man who made the Midnight Ride to...warn the British of anything.

On the march back toward Lexington at gunpoint, Revere was threatened that his head would be blown off if he did not tell everything he knew. Revere was glad to oblige because he knew it would put the fear of God into these Redcoats to know there entire mission was compromised. Before they reached Lexington, the redcoats heard a volley from the Minutemen gathering on Lexington Green. They released their prisoners on foot right there and rode to warn their commanding officers.

http://www.masshist.org/database/img-viewer.php?item_id=99&img_step=1&tpc=&pid=&mode=transcript&tpc=&pid=#page1

When I got there, out Started Six officers, on Horse back,
and orderd me to dismount;-one of them, who appeared
to have the command, examined me, where I came from,
& what my Name Was? I told him. it was Revere, he as-
ked if it was Paul? I told him yes He asked me if
I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He
demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and
aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River,
and that There would be five hundred Americans there
in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.

The bold part is mine. From the Massachusetts Historical Societies Online Collection.

It is after this that they threaten to blow his head off.

I don't disagree... but it all comes down to what one's goals are...

If you're goal is to take over a country, imprision or kill everyone you hate, then lauch genocides and wars of conquest... killing your opposition is the smart thing to do. Odds are, after all, they'll be trying to do you in to save themselves from you (if they're smart) and to prevent your evil insanity (if they're both smart and moral).

On the other hand... if you want to be elected to power and implement policies that you think (key word there) will result in greater prosperity and freedom for all... killing people would be counter-productive... not a very smart move at all (nor a moral one).

Sarah`s suggesting he went out intending to "warn" the Brits.

Complete bullshit.

This is a school course example of it not being the fuck-up that gets you in trouble but the cover-up.

No, mostly I am saying that the narrative from Longfellow's poem is inaccurate. It is a good poem, but that does not mean he did not use some artistic license.

Most people learn the Longfellow poem in school, but the accurate story is not taught. That is unfortunate.

I think that it is sad that there are so many people calling Ms. Palin "dumb" and "stupid" over this, when they do not know the correct history.

What is even sadder is that not ONE of these people are going to say, "Oh, she was right, I guess I learned something today."

As far as no one knowing what happened, well Julia, some of us are using Paul Revere's account. Of anyone, you would think that HE would know.

I have heard revisionists state he never even went on the ride in the first place.

And, there were several people quoting from his own account of events, did you miss that?

Here is the funny thing to me, this woman constantly makes gaffes (some large, some small) and then will argue to make herself right. It never fails. She cannot accept a universe in which she might be wrong. It is always the lame stream media.

She is a perpetual victim.

We ALL misspeak at times. Every single person has done it! Most of us look around sheepishly and admit we are mistaken, some of us just can't. It is actually a narcissistic trait to behave that way.

I agree. She rather forgot about the fact that the mission itself hinged on stealth. PR set out to warn Hancock and Adams, not the British. That was just a happenstance of his capture. Is Palin willing to say that Revere would have gone up to the British to warn them even if they had NOT captured him? If that were true, why send Dawes out as an alternative to Revere to warn Hancock and Adams? Why not just send Dawes alone. Doc sent both of them in case one of them got captured before they could get to Hancock and Adams. Hardly the move of someone who's purpose is to warn the British.

An aside to those who are pondering the number of threads about Palin; Have you not been paying attention to the fat threads, pro domme threads etc. which permeate collarchat side and go on for 50 pages? Train wrecks are beloved around these fora and threads about Palin are on par with fat threads and pro domme threads. It's not at all surprising to me.

Looking at the video it seems obvious to me that she simply flubbed saying "British" when she meant "Americans." Although it is true that the colonists still tended to think of themselves as British I just don't get the impression that she was refering to that or the fact that he spoke with some of the Regulars who captured him. In fact, I very much get the impression that her knowledge on the subject is the simplified School House Rocks version.

Whatever... if she had simply said, "opps, my mistake, I meant warn the Americans," most of this nonsense would have blow over by now.

Thats the problem tho Marc, she couldnt accept that she flubbed.
Like the Blood Libel cobblers she made a faux pas with
she couldnt admit it, she came out with that ridiculous statement, gave her credibility another 50 points in the con column and "lying" in the pro column

She's not the first political figure to make that mistake and I doubt she will be the last. I think the problem is that when they make such a flub some politicians try to head off the inevietable "pounce" from the opposition. The reality is that the majority of the electorate doesn't give a shit... they accept that people make a flub now and then. What they don't accept is spin designed to make a flub look "right."
