Longfellow's poem "The Innkeeper's Tale" or "The Landlord's Tale" ("Listen my children and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere") was based on the story told him by Lyman Howe, the Innkeeper of "The Red Horse Inn" in Sudbury, MA and written by Longfellow in 1859. It was published in 1860 as part of a collection "Tales From A Wayside Inn". Lyman Howe told Longfellow the story as he had been told it by his grandfather, Eziekial Howe, who had been the elected Colonel of the Sudbury Militia on April 19, 1775. When the collection of poems became a best seller, Howe changed the name of the inn to "The Wayside Inn" to get the free advertising. When Henry Ford owned the property in the 1920's he re-named it "Longfellow's Wayside Inn" - the name it has today. BTW - I will be at Longfellow's Wayside Inn tonight for a meeting of the town's Historical Society. So, Longfellow got the story third or fourth-hand at best, and added and subtracted to the story to make it rhyme (such as leaving out William Dawes, the other rider and the fact that the mission of Revere and Dawes was not to warn the people of the soldier's approach, but rather to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams, who were staying in a Lexington tavern, that the soldiers planned to arrest Hancock for being the biggest smuggler in the colony and Adams for being his accomplice. The ride from Lexington to Concord was done on Revere's, Dawes' and and Dr. Samuel Prescott's own initiative. At no time did any of the three say "The British are coming" - since everyone in the colony of Massachusetts was British except for a few Indians - and at no time did Revere dismount and ring any bells, as "The Divine Sarah" stated to the press in her interviews). FYI: The original "Divine Sarah" was the French actress Sarah Bernhardt. I refer to Ms. Palin as "The Divine Sarah" because (a) her worshippers treat her as "Divine" and a "Goddess", and (b) I suspect her public stupidity is an act to convince the anti-intellectual, functionally illiterate part of the American people that she's one of them.
