LOL, she sounded so eloquent and polite.... Her language alone would have been a good reason to ask her to leave...

I don't agree with most of the posters, it seems a bit over the top of the theatre to throw her out for using her phone as a light, and even if she were texting, if it was on silent then I don't see any reason to throw her out.

Myself, I'd avoid that theatre just on principal.

And as for her voicemail, well I don't see anything particularly rude or offensive about that either. Kids talk that way these days, that's just the way it is. And before you all start going on about how that's some sort of sign of how ill mannered we are or how its a real shame, just remember how your parents felt about how you talked when you were a teen. I've seen the news clips from the 50s, 60s, and 70s on TV where parents are lamenting how rude their children were and how profanity was going to destroy society. The kids they were complaining about are you.

So you  were swearing too much for your parents tastes when you were young, I'm pretty sure your parents swore too much for your grandparents' taste as well. Its a universal thing, its always been like that. The ancient Athenians fussed about the language of their children, and you're doing the same. As the kids in my generation get older we'll swear less, and when we have kids of our own we'll wonder what's wrong with that generation that they have to swear all the time. And the same thing will happen to them, and their kids, and so on, and so on, forever.

Sorry, but you know if you can't form a sentence without effing and blinding or shit, it's not being young, it's being an ill bread, ignorant idiot.

I know plenty of young people and they don't swear like the girl (I use the term in the broadest sense), in fact if anybody with a similar language would apply to work in my department, or I would hear that kind of talk, they would be possibly looking for another job. The problem is if you do swear like a trouper, you can't just switch it off, it will slip in in unacceptable situations, like when you are talking with a client or a superior - and I don't know any job worth having where that kind of language would be acceptable.

Thanks so much for the compliment, I have only the highest regard for you too LadyC.

Perhaps you should go to the nearest high school and just listen to the way the kids actually talk when there's no adults around. I'm a very polite girl and yet I swear about as much as that girl did when I get really mad, and I'm sure many others do as well.

But just remember this, you need us. If it weren't for us ill bred, ignorant idiots, nobody would ever notice just what a well bred, informed genius you are.

Heather,

My guess is that if they have a "No Texting" policy then it is clearly stated somewhere.

Also the caller/texter changed her story several times, in which case her assertion that her phone was on silent is in and of itself rather suspect.
My guess is she was warned and she told them to F**k Off.

You did not find anything offensive with the message that she left and to you that may be business as usual.
To me, that was verbally abusive at worst and very rude at least.

It doesn't matter, however: the company isn't losing anything and really neither is she.
She is free to go back to where her texting is welcome and the patrons of the Alamo will be happy to know they will be able to watch their movies undisturbed by conversation or texting.

Win-win.

Maybe it's a cultural difference, but the only people I hear talking like that freak in the recording are what we usually term "chavs" or "hoodies" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav) you really don't get this kind of swearing and I'm glad for it. Several friends have kids, they have BBQs in the garden and yes, the language is rougher but nowhere near that. A person who can't express him or herself without the use of profanities, I think there's something seriously lacking in the brain department.

On my side of the pond this kind of swearing is seldom heard from people without previous convictions or previous convictions waiting to happen.

Might sound like an old foggy to you and I guess for you everybody above 30 is, but it's the way it works and I do tend to hang out with a lot of teenagers because I volunteer in the local community center for unemployed kids (teaching languages), the ones that want a job tend to modify their language rather sharpishly.

Yay for the Alamo.

As for the young "lady" who left the message, a "I apologize for being ignorant about your policy regarding the use of cell phones" would have made her look like some one who deserved a bit of leeway.  What she did say in her message makes me think they made the right call, and ran one rude ass bitch off.

As far as the bolded part, yes, we cussed like sailors... away from adults. I really didnt enjoy the prospect of swallowing my teeth had my parents heard me. I raised my son the same way.

We recommend arriving at the theater early not just to ensure that you get the seat of your choice and enjoy our custom-made preshow, but also so you can browse through our menu while the lights in the auditorium are still on.

...........

most locations offer dim lighting under the tables to help you see what you're scribbling

Why did she need the light of her cell phone when there are dim lights under the tables?

You really see nothing wrong with the message she left?  I must be getting old because all I can think is how I would kick her ass if she were my daughter and left something that rude on a businesses answering machine.

Sure, I cussed too much for my moms tastes.  Heck, i still cuss like a sailor, the word fuck is my favorite word.  I love the way it feels when it rolls off my tongue.

That said, I didn't cuss around my mom or any other adults in my family.  I have worked in the school system for almost 20 years, and I do not cuss at work.  I do not cuss when speaking to folks I do not know, and I certainly would not cuss if I were trying to make a point that I had been mistreated by a business.

My son and his friends cuss like sailors, but only when they think I am not hearing them.

Cussing is not bad, but, there is a time and place for everything.  She made a bad call by using such language on the message she left for the theater.  She proved that she is a lil smartass, with no respect for others.

Oh dear.

Well, i thought the girl's message was more funny than offensive, but i think you'll still have to chalk me up as one of the sour old farts. A while ago i went to dinner with a group of people from work, and i was appalled to see them spend the entire time texting at the table. A generational thing, perhaps. Anyway, i saw their behavior as extremely rude, and i'm sure they saw nothing wrong with it. Different strokes, i guess.

Most theatres and fine dining restaurants have a no cell phone policy. i remember back in the day being asked to put my phone away when i was using it at a restaurant bar. They were polite about it, and i politely complied. i didn't understand the rule at the time, although i understand it perfectly now. If they had been rude to me, or if they had thrown me out of the restaurant, i would have been offended, especially since i didn't know about the rule. It's one of those duh moments now, but i can sympathise with being young and clueless.

i think the theatre's zero tolerance policy is a little harsh. i probably would have just given her a warning, although i can see the need for stricter measures if the theater was having a lot of problems with it. i dunno. The ad made me laugh.

This is for you, Heather...

I am one of those people who think that if people are being quiet with their txtings, and not distracted from important things (like driving or class) they should be left in peace to do it. I know I am not popular in that belief, but there it is...

As far as this theater, I wouldn't go either. If they think that it is good policy to take someone's money, kick them out without a warning, and then use it as a way to advertise for themselves... well I think that is just misguided. I also think that this theater chain forgets who their customers are, now and in the future. Young people txt a lot, and cuss a lot, and have the disposable income to go to the movies.

TA DA!!!I've underlined the operative word. They change their language. And you working with teenagers isn't a measure of how they speak when there is NO adult around. The mere fact that you are there will alter the way they talk.

quote:

On my side of the pond this kind of swearing is seldom heard from people without previous convictions or previous convictions waiting to happen.
I doubt that, what is more likely to be the case is that when you hear this sort of swearing you automatically assume  they must be people with previous convictions or previous convictions waiting to happen.

quote:

A person who can't express him or herself without the use of profanities, I think there's something seriously lacking in the brain department.
Really? Make sure to tell Hanners that the next time you're responding to one of her posts. I'm sure she'd love to hear how she's mentally deficient.

quote:

Might sound like an old foggy to you and I guess for you everybody above 30 is, but it's the way it works
You do sound like an old fogey, and no, chronological age has nothing to do with it. I have told you, based on many years of continuous extensive personal interaction with young people when there are no adults around, that they swear all the time, and they do so from around the age of 6 on (though the words used are different). And yet, you continue to insist that this just isn't so, based on nothing other than a vague sense of personal superiority. You insist that only ill educated criminal types talk that way. That's what makes you sound like an old fogey. You see, to my mind an old fogey is a person who pretends things were not the way they were when they were young, and clings to these prejudices in the face of evidence to the contrary.
