without a warning

Why do you assume this is without warning?

At the AD's cinemas, they take a hard line against texting, or talking, during the movie, and will toss you out if you don't follow their rules -- which are, the theater says, clearly posted on screen before every show.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/popcornprejudiceamovieblog/2015254202_remember_the_alamo_a_tale_of_t.html?syndication=rss

Seems it is clearly posted.

According to Tim League, the Drafthouse's founder, the woman in question was warned twice about texting during a screening, and then, in accordance with company policy, was escorted out without a refund. "I don't think people realize that it is distracting," League told The Lookout. "It seems like nothing, but if you spend as much time as I do at the movies, you realize the entire theater sees it and it pulls you out of the movie experience. It's every bit as intrusvie as talking."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110607/us_yblog_thelookout/texas-movie-theater-makes-an-example-and-a-psa-of-a-texting-audience-member

And she was warned more than once.

I am going by what the young lady said when she lodged her complaint.... she said she was asked to leave without a warning.

I have told you, based on many years of continuous extensive personal interaction with young people when there are no adults around, that they swear all the time, and they do so from around the age of 6 on (though the words used are different).

I do not know who you hang with, but if they are cussing at 6, that screams, to me, that their parents are assholes, and does not reflect on the child one bit.

Kids repeat what they hear.

As for your extensive personal interaction with young people when there are no adults around, well, you are almost a kid your self, so of course you would have more recent contact with them.

Gawd, did I just play the age card?

After hearing her voice mail, I would tend to believe the theater personnel.

At 6 kids are around other kids...

Am I the only one that remembers what it was like to be a kid around other kids? I remember kids cussing A LOT when I was little. I didn't curse, but that was because I hung out with the born agains when I was a wee tot.

But the rest of the kids were cursing up a storm.

Well, that is your prerogative. I do not think I would be that mad unless I was kicked out without warning and given no refund.... but hey, we all have opinions

Yeah, julia, even though I agreed that kids cuss like sailors, you are the only one that remembers.

People would get mad if they were kicked out with repeated warnings and not given a refund.

Okay, it made me laugh, but i would be tempted to avoid the Alamo Drafthouse simply because it's classless to publicly make fun of your patrons, no matter how silly they are. This is funny as hell, but i don't think they should have run the ad.

The young lady said a lot of things... including a statement that she wasn't texting while in the next breath clearly admitting she was.

They didn't make the policy up just for her.
Likely had she not been texting in the first place, she would have seen the warning on the screen.

Okay, at first i thought it was an ad they had run on t.v. or something, like, see this stupid bitch, we kicked her out, aren't we cool? But, no. The theater's showing it inhouse and before R- rated movies only, as a way to emphasize their texting policy (which the girl apparently thought was NOT emphasized enough). So, go for it, Alamo Drafthouse.

I guess I was sheltered and so were my friends. Heck, we didn't even say fart or poot, we said "busted a bean"!  That still cracks me up.

I honestly can not recall ever hearing cursing from peers til junior high school.....I still believe that any child who uses curse words at the age of 6 is only parroting what they ehar at home.  I have seen too many examples that prove this to be true in my 20 years working in elementary schools.

TA DA!!!I've underlined the operative word. They change their language. And you working with teenagers isn't a measure of how they speak when there is NO adult around. The mere fact that you are there will alter the way they talk.

quote:

On my side of the pond this kind of swearing is seldom heard from people without previous convictions or previous convictions waiting to happen.
I doubt that, what is more likely to be the case is that when you hear this sort of swearing you automatically assume  they must be people with previous convictions or previous convictions waiting to happen.

A person who can't express him or herself without the use of profanities, I think there's something seriously lacking in the brain department.
Really? Make sure to tell Hanners that the next time you're responding to one of her posts. I'm sure she'd love to hear how she's mentally deficient.

quote:

Might sound like an old foggy to you and I guess for you everybody above 30 is, but it's the way it works
You do sound like an old fogey, and no, chronological age has nothing to do with it. I have told you, based on many years of continuous extensive personal interaction with young people when there are no adults around, that they swear all the time, and they do so from around the age of 6 on (though the words used are different). And yet, you continue to insist that this just isn't so, based on nothing other than a vague sense of personal superiority. You insist that only ill educated criminal types talk that way. That's what makes you sound like an old fogey. You see, to my mind an old fogey is a person who pretends things were not the way they were when they were young, and clings to these prejudices in the face of evidence to the contrary.

Well, I must be downright ancient then.
I did not say the word "Fuck" until shortly before I turned 20 and I did it as a request.
It took me 10 minutes to muster up the courage to utter it.
I never did cuss much as a teen and never when I was younger.

My parents did not openly cuss, nor did theirs (and no, I did not grow up in either a particularly strict, nor religious family).

I went to a regional public school system of 5 towns and maybe heard the word Fuck half a dozen times (if that) junior high-graduating high school.

I do swear now and then, but it isn't a habit that is central to me and those words are reserved for 'special occasions'.

I find it quite ironic that those who think the initial message was tacky in the first place are thinking it is okay to use it as any form of advertisement (PSA or otherwise). They are still trying to use ridicule to make a point, and personally I wouldn't want to go to such a theater.

I wonder if this gal might have legal recourse if she knew they were using her voice on their recording this way....

I wonder, would you want to call in a complaint to this chain seeing how they have treated others who have done so?
