It's a personal attack when you're using it as a term of abuse, sweetie, particularly when (as Lucy points out) you're applying it even more widely than Rik the sociology student applies the term "fascist"...

It is clear in the posting history above if anyone is as bored as I was and cares to look at it, and it is just ONE term. He does it with the word "liberal" and "progressive", too.
