A high cost of living is frequently the result of a strong economy.

Canada has a bunch of natural resources, and relatively few inhabitants to share the royalties from them. An enviable situation.
On the surface this appears to be so, but when you factor in health care costs it doesn't hold up so well. And the real reason why our economy is doing so well and didn't tank is because our financial sector is heavily regulated, they just simply cannot engage in the crazy practices that led to the melt down. I realize this is an unpopular idea south of the border, but it is so.

Some Canadian banks did have some exposure due to them holding some of those crappy securitized US mortgages, not enough to hurt them much but they were starting to get sucked into that cesspool.

I think it goes beyond the regs tho (those were starting to slip too, btw), imo and generally speaking, Canadians tend to be more financially conservative and dont have the roll-the-dice mentality that took over in the US. Those are just my feelings, I dont have stats to back that up tho (and who totally trusts stats anyway lol).

Oh, and the "eh" thing is an eastern Canada thing. No one in western Canada says that!

I apologize in advance for the severe beating they'll receive in Boston monday night.

Arpig - *eye rollage* nowhere in my post did i say it was new. however, what i said IS the truth regarding the modern context of the seal hunt. again, history and culture aren't enough justification for something that makes no sense -- each time the quotas go up, when science shows the populations can't support it, it ceases to make sense.
indigenous people are allowed to hunt whales because they hunt VERY few of them (something around one or two a year for an entire community), and they waste nothing. i imagine if, for some reason, there were only 10 whales left on earth, we'd have to stop their hunts, too.

It's better than United States.

People smell better.

No stupid Southern accents.

Various cultures allowed. No melting pot.

Normal people.

Brutal winters/summers. This toughens you up. In fact, I am much stronger than everybody in California, Arizona and Nevada combined.

We run faster.

That's all you need to know, daddio.

Thanks Knock...
I am going to bring your totally excellent assessment of Canada in comparison to the US into photoshop and add a nice Canadian flag, and add a second page with mapquest directions Montreal and Quebec.
Then I'm going to put it up in the bars in town were all the losers and undesirables (think Tea Party) hang out.
And I promise to thank you personally for each one that moves[:D]

I predict it will be brutal. Boston is the better team, that's a sad thing for a Canadian to have to admit, but its true.

What you said is the truth regarding ALL economic activity in Newfoundland, everything is done by out-of-work fishermen. You phrased it that way deliberately to belittle them, to make the seal hunt seem even less appropriate.

Tell you what, we'll stop the hunt when those of you who oppose it decide to supplement the hunters' incomes while they wait for a job opening in a field you find "acceptable". Until then, its just a lot of empty moralizing divorced from real world considerations.

Hahahaha ... that's pretty funny. I communicate with a handful of Inuit friends that I've known since fishing with them in Alaska when we are all three about 12 years old. And I'll tell you something, it's pretty funny that we people of the so-called modern world have the nerve to think we would have to or even COULD tell them anything about conservation. I think they would know it was time to cut back well before we had a clue.
My friend Jake managed to get himself into Cal tech and degree there in Biology, yet he still lives rather close to the traditional lifestyle and in addition is directly involved in the monitoring of wildlife populations at and near Kenai Peninsula.
And sorry, I am not trying to get down on you, just wanted to point out that the indigenous people on this continent at least don't really care about our assessment or management plan for them. Least that's the sense I get.

Actually, I think that if they ARE better... it's not by a lot... I have LOVED the match-up and it's been the most sensational hockey I have seen in the cup in years! I'm a little tired of Alex Burrows and his prick moves, but I have been impressed with EVERY other player's performance on both teams.

LMAO!! You are a cruel, but brilliantly cruel man. Can you just imagine what would happen when the newly arrived American fascists encounter the Quebec language nazis?

Beautiful! Simply beautiful!

The Canucks are lucky to have gotten as far as they have. A few years ago they werent much of a team, that is why i was surprised to learn they made it to the finals at all. All Canadian teams are at a major disadvantage, imo, due to what the powers that be have done to the game. What they have done to the game IS a very sad thing (no matter which wins).

You know... what you've said here REALLY resonates with me. I live in Gloucester, Ma. Oldest Seaport in the US. And it's been happening here for the last 20 years (15 of which I have been here to witness). The fleet is slowly being sold off. The Japanese and Irish and Dutch seem to quickly move in and cut out the US Middle man when it comes to our fishing grounds, and there are 'Fishermen' all around struggling to fit into the local economy in some capacity. It's kind of sad. And even sadder when you hear this "Modern context" bullshit ... like they don't eat fish anymore. Course in reality, they do, it's just foreign processed and of awful quality. Interesting the 'modern world' has no compunction about clubbing baby fishermen to death.... Guess they don't look cuddly enough[:D]

Arpig -> RE: Lets Talk about Canada... (6/12/2011 11:51:05 AM)

In the final analysis it really doesn't matter where the teams are located, they're pretty much all Canadians anyway.

Who else is unsurprised that a thread on Canada has somehow turned to hockey?

Well, as long as he sends them just to Quebec! Western Canada doesnt want them, all the potheads and crazy delusional actors (think Quaid) end up in western Canada as it is. [>:]

Actually, Boston always manages to keep a small but significant number of US Born players (a lot get recruited from B.U.). But even the ones from your homeland get honorary citizenship in Maine, which is ALMOST the United States[:D]

Oh well, as long as there arent any major riots...

Not happy with the seal hunt. I am a member of Greenpeace too(no one is surprised i guess)
I love hockey, altho I root for the Pens, I like Boston too, That the Canucks are int he final is excellent:) yeah I have no hard n fast rules, I actually enjoy the game, not just teams(cept the Pens) and sid crosby is my adoptive son*he doesnt know yet*
I would love to live out in the boonies out of the way of humans, but I cant do without my internet and the toronto BDSM "scene" is just waiting for me to rejoin, lol
I Might even start up my munch again next year
the only thing I do have issues with apart from conservatives, is the heat in the summer, I am definitely a winter bunny and DID not expect the summers to make me wilt so much. As a delicate *heee* english rose, Im not coping too well still.
