As I look back on politics in the US, over the last 10-15 years, I see the following:

1) Very loud Republicans saying absolutely ridiculous things (including revising history to make their point).
2) Very loud Republicans constantly attacking Democrats (especially Obama). (Regardless of what Obama says or does)
3) Democrats occasionally calling B.S. on #1, and #2, and identifying it as such
4) Almost NO real political debate of substantive ideas
5) RE #3, I notice the following:
**** A) To a Republican, anyone who disagrees with them is a liberal
**** B) All Republicans who tow the party line are "Conservatives"
**** C) To a Republican, Liberals can't win an argument against a "Conservative", so their tactic is to refer to the "Conservative" as stupid (Ann Coulter has played this card many times)

Here is my analysis:

1) There some good and some bad liberal ideas and some good and bad conservative ideas. The problem is, we rarely get a chance to really debate them.
2) Being Conservative <> Being Stupid
3) Republicans <> Conservatives. Not even close. Republicans come in two flavors: 1) The elite corrupt corporatists (i.e. the Koch Brothers) 2) The woefully ignorant that blindly spew the Republican corporatist line (i.e. Michelle Bachmann, John Boehner). True Conservatives preserve freedom, are fiscally responsible, and support an efficient, streamlined government that effectively represents the people. I haven't seen a Republican since Eisenhower who comes close (perhaps with the exception of Ron Paul) For Ms. Coulter... It's not that "liberals" call "conservatives stupid to win an argument. It is anyone with any common sense calling these faux-conservative arguments "stupid".

An example of Republican myths that conservatives know have been debunked:
A) Tax cuts for high income earners create jobs / High income earners are "job creators". Anyone who knows how capitalism works knows how absolutely absurd this is. A thriving economy creates jobs. A greater demand for goods and services creates jobs. No intelligent business owner hires ANYONE just because they saved a few percentage points on their personal income tax. Further, investment in business (expansion, new FTE's) is in itself a tax SHELTER.

B) Unregulated capitalism leads to a thriving economy. - SIGH. Conservatives know, that unregulated Capitalism cannibalizes itself (i.e. banking/housing, oil/gasoline). Conservatives know that Anarchy is a failed system. Our freedoms END when we infringe on other's freedom. (i.e. When we create secret exchanges to sell oil derivatives, we destroy our economy, and infringe on everyone else's freedom. When government gives away land to oil companies and subsidize them so they can drill for oil and sell it on the world market, we destroy our economy and infringe on everyone else's freedom). FREE MARKET CAPITALISM NEEDS APPROPRIATE REGULATIONS TO KEEP IT FREE!!!!!

4) There is a legitimate debate as to the role of government as a whole, and in various situations. There is a legitimate argument for smaller government (where it makes sense). The problem is, the intelligent conservatives have been drowned out by the Republicans.

The Democrats are by no means, the answer to our problems. Although, the more intelligent among them are primed for an intelligent debate. They just have no one with whom to debate.

It is nothing new...discourse is the norm not the exception...it has worked pretty good this way for a long time but it would be nice every now and then to work together.

Very true. But once upon a time, if you said something in a national TV interview like "history as shown that upper income tax cuts have created 21 million jobs over the last 15 years", the interviewer would challenge your premise.

Nowadays, (thanks to Republican deregulation) all news media are owned by a few corporations.

Thanks to faux-conservative Republican mouthpieces, (i.e. Rush Limbaugh and Fox News, the patently false and ridiculous has become the new norm)

On the contrary. They just debate each other.

That's why they never get their fucking act together and DO something.

If they ever stop fighting among themselves they might reaiize how much change they could bring about.

Considering their track records, and their unique, uncanny talent for making a mess of things, it could be argued that having politicians who do nothing is a desirable state of affairs, and in real terms far more productive than the alternative .....

In today's news, I read that Belgium has now gone a whole year without a Government, due to incessant bickering among the politicians. Has any one noticed? Can any one tell the difference?

For another example, think Iraq ....

While I don't hold this view, it's not entirely without merit.

tweakabelle...who has ever done it better? Yes our system is frustrating and infuriating but in the end it works as good as any other in history. So maybe they don't really make a mess of things but instead the constant fighting stops impulsive not well though out legislation.

This is from 2004, I watched it live way back in the day, and it is well worth the watch even though it is 14 minutes long.... Jon Stewart on Crossfire...

Goes to the heart of what you are talking about

While those might be fine examples of intelligent political debate.....it doesn't actually address what happened to the practice does it?
The 60's would seem to me to be the demarcation point....America grew up,the changes that occurred rocked the very bedrock of American civility and created faults....race,sex,abortion,church and state...enter the culture wars. Now instead of two political parties who disagreed with methodology in achieving similar goals.....we have two parties who are trying to achieve polar opposite goals.

There are still debates going on, and if you go to news sites, like Democracy Now, you can get some of that right on their home page. The point is that the corporate media doesn't attract advertisers with reasoned debate people want this

So when you have an environment where real debate isn't profitable, the politicians do not want to really engage in it either, because then they are on record about saying something of substance, then what we get is what we see. Lets face it, name calling and flame throwing sell books (Ann coulter is proof of that), and we have to turn to comics to get something resembling real criticism of not only politicians, but of the ludicrous system that puts them in power,

All true Julia....yet the substance and the very issues of the culture wars we as a nation are continuously fighting also lend itself to this devolvement of civility.Look at abortion...Roe v Wade decision was handed down how many years ago ?Yet it is a constant issue still tearing at the fabric of this nation...The religious right is actively engaged in trying to roll back 50 years of social progress (of course to be fair they would not characterize it as such)the result being that issues are never settled, one side or the other just suffers a temporary setback till political conditions and the winds of change allow the battles to be refought.

One significant problem is how one side would much prefer to dictate to other what their position is, and base the debate from that. A nice example would be President Obama's recent speech on immigration, where he called for a bipartisan approach, before going off the teleprompter to say that Republicans wanted a moat stocked with alligators for the border. How exactly is that helpful? Or how is it productive to frame a discussion of an unsustainable entitlement program, from a foundation that the other side wants to push granny off a cliff?

Want to elevate the discussion? Start by ridding yourself of the Alinsky requirement that all the angels be one one side, and all the demons on the other. Seek some shred of common ground with everyone, especially those with whom you most disagree.

True dat.

As I look back on politics in the US, over the last 10-15 years

OP, actually the last 30 years. Dems and Pubs used to meet and hammer things out. With the rise of the Christian right, discussion became less and less palatable, and the incessant blame and "win at all costs" thing hit full.

Moderate is a dirty word. That's the problem.

In another thread, mnottertail quipped that he and I were the last Republicans, despite our more liberal affiliation. He's right. We'd have been moderate Republicans back then. What was just is no more.

You could have just as easily chosen the characterization of "death panels" and made the same point...of course we all need to make our political points while we decry the lack of civility.I probably had the same thing running thru my mind when I chose the continuing tussle over abortion.
