Hippiekinkster -> Black Repub Ken Barnes Wakes Up... (6/13/2011 10:52:34 PM)

After having hit the snooze button a couple thousand times...

"I was one of those rare species: a black Republican, the guy willing to spit into the wind of conventional thought, who was often showcased on camera at party events to prove inclusiveness (guess he got tired of being the token brown person, eh? -HK).

But as a proud black man, I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party.

Being a Republican has long been a part of my personal and professional identities(tragic when one defines oneself not by who one is on the inside, but by who one hangs with. There's hope for the guy.-HK), so leaving the party is a difficult and emotional decision.

In 1998, as a young man searching for what I believed were shared values, I cut ties with the Democratic Party and became a Republican. Democrats, in my view, had become unwelcoming to those holding center-right views not in lockstep with the party(His Teal views didn't fit whith the Forest Green Dems...hahaha.-HK), and it was my belief that through hard work, the Republican Party could be utilized as a vehicle for improving our community.

For the next 13 years, I dedicated myself to growing the conservative base of the Republican Party (this is called a Pleonasm, dude.-HK), and in the process bound myself in emotion and deed.

...

As of late, however, when I look at myself in the mirror there is one question which perplexes me: Can I, in good conscience, remain affiliated with an organization whose message purveyors of racism and bigotry find attractive?

Generally speaking, Republicans are decent people, and naturally, many of my closest friends vote Republican. As with any large organization or group, there will always be people at the fringes who hold views that are not representative of the body.

An organization cannot control the behavior of each individual actor, but it can control its response to abhorrent conduct.

The latest incident in a string of tawdry, race-based actions was the promotion of a racist cartoon by elected Orange County Republican Party Central Committee member Marilyn Davenport1. The cartoon depicted President Barack Obama and his parents as chimpanzees, while simultaneously implying that the president is not a legitimate American, but rather an African-born interloper.

While the Orange County GOP chairman and a number of other committee members were quick to condemn the image and Davenport, what’s disturbing is the incredible number of people who continue to defend Davenport’s actions as well as the cartoon itself.

Had this been an isolated event, it could be set aside as a mere aberration. However, when placed in the context of similar offenses by the same self-identified tea party-conservative Republicans, there emerges a disturbing pattern of extreme intolerance(What did you expect from the party of Southern White Men who defected to the Republican'ts en masse when they awakend one day to find that not only couldn't they lynch black men anymore, but they had to drink from the same fountains?-HK).

Over the past two years, we have seen Republicans use long-held racist imagery in portrayals of Obama. The president has been depicted as a communist witch doctor, a man inclined to plant watermelons on the White House lawn, and we watched in disbelief as his face was placed on an “Obama Buck Food Stamp” along with stereotyped pictures of fried chicken, barbecue ribs, Kool-Aid and the obligatory watermelon(Aw, they were just having a little fun. >snort<-HK).

What does any of this have to do with public policy or conservative values? Here is a man who excelled academically at the finest schools in the world, has a wonderful in-tact family, worked hard and rose to become president of the United States. Yet in spite of his accomplishments, the president is still labeled an illegitimate, socialist, African witch doctor and has his face superimposed on a chimpanzee(By people who are inferior to him.-HK).

If this can be done to a black man who is the leader of the free world, how long will it be before fellow Republicans insert my face on a chimpanzee?(Dude, in their minds' eyes, that's how they already see you. But they are oh-so excruciatingly polite to you to your face.-HK)

These behaviors also raise larger issues for African Americans and other minority groups within the GOP. How can I look my parents in the eye and tell them I’m a Republican in spite of these offenses? If he were still living, could my Latino father-in-law be proud that his daughter supports the GOP, in spite of the constant anti-Latino rhetoric that comes from the party? Can gay family members reconcile my support of a party that seeks to strip them of their basic human rights?

These are not issues which pit moderate against conservative views, but rather consequential matters which transcend political positioning and speak to universal human values.

There are a number of Republicans (and Democrats) who will view my switch to “decline to state” as a net gain for the Democratic Party. However, I reject the theory of zero-sum politics which claim we live in a binary world of Democrats and Republicans, where a lack of support for one side works only to empower the other.

Having now been active in both major political parties, I’ve discovered the common prohibited activity is critical thinking.(Odd. Most of the Progressives I know have at least undergrad degrees, and they all think critically. But then, I'm not a Dem, although I vote that way absent a Green candidate.-HK)"

Can I get a witness?

Tell him to come and run for senate in massachusetts against Scott Brown. I'd consider the guy after what he's had to say.

I probably wouldn't, but then again I am all about the issues and very little about personality. Hell, I don't care much about personal ethics either if they will do what I agree with.

Brain -> RE: Black Repub Ken Barnes Wakes Up... (6/13/2011 11:50:52 PM)

I suggest forming a new party called the PPA, the progressive Party of America.

The guy has a point.  However, the GOP will not lose many voters if the blacks in the party defect.

The Hispanics are the sought-after minority.  The blacks are yesterday's news.

Barnes' assertion that neither party actually thinks, is not quite true.  It DOES hold for the party leaderships.  But not for the memberships.

I never buy the "both parties are, wrong,f`d up,to blame, ______ fill in the blank, etc." shit from politicians.

Especially republicans.

That line usually comes up after a con can`t defend a policy, act or a con fuck-up.

After the '08' bush recession,I was interested to see what most of my loud mouthed republican friends and assosiates had to say. Most just looked at the floor, shaking their heads in silence."Their both fucked up etc., was the word back then.

PETA would be all over that. I'll bet the chimpanzee would be pissed, too.

HA... I just saw the above comment and couldn't helping but think, if I was black and read that, I'd first GASP... and then i'd be like, "Yesterday's news?  When were we TODAY's news?!!  Whatch you talkin' 'bout Willis?!!" [sm=rofl.gif]

BKSir -> RE: Black Repub Ken Barnes Wakes Up... (6/14/2011 9:55:00 AM)

Now if I could just get the Log Cabin Republicans to realize that they're about as ridiculous as "Jews for Hitler", we'd be set...

EternalHoH -> RE: Black Repub Ken Barnes Wakes Up... (6/14/2011 12:06:09 PM)

My oh my.

Where are the usual suspect telling us hatred for the man has never been about racism.

I once asked a gay, Republican friend about his political leanings.  His reply... "I'm gay... not stupid!!!"

You know, just because you are gay, does not mean you are not also stupid, the two conditions are not mutually exclusive...

And I see stupid people claim not to be all of the time

You know... he's entitled to his opinion, just as you are.  He thinks the Dems are stupid... you don't... viva la differance!!!  The Dems seem to think anyone that's gay, or black, or whatever absolutely MUST be on their side of the political fence.  Well shocker... that's not the case -- and worse, when they do stupid things like call people "Uncle Tom" or throw Oreo Cookies at them, or suggest they be "sent back to the fields... or strung up" they have no room to point their hypcrtical fingers at anyone.

Guess he did not see all the pics comparing Bush to a chimpanzee. They have done it to most all of the presidents, especially Bush

I could see how this would be a racist thing if black people had been sitting around drawing pictures of Yale legacy white boys from Connecticut that made them look like monkeys and chimps as a way to dehumanize them...

But alas, I do not think that there is any way that any one could make Bush and family to be from some sort of historically disadvantaged group subject to racist prejudice
