searching4mysir -> What is the difference between a submissive and a slave? (6/26/2011 4:09:31 PM)

Is it the lack of limits? Is it in domestic servitude (i.e., a submissive is only submissive in the bedroom)?

I know these terms mean different things to different people.

That's the only answer you're really going to get.... it will be dressed up in ribbons and lace and prepositional phrases and examples, but it's still that same answer. (except of course the actual historical, legal stuff which I don't think you are asking)

PetiteOralSub -> RE: What is the difference between a submissive and a slave? (6/26/2011 4:22:11 PM)

Concur as above.
There are many who can define the differences.
Some believe there are just degrees of the same thing,
others who are sticklers for semantics and realize they refer to two seperate aspects of alternative lifestyles.
a million answers or one answer

Sub and slave mean whatever they mean to you.

agreeing with the two previous posters -- i think this is a fairly common topic here, so try doing a search and see if you can find some of the older topics, which might help you elaborate a bit more.

The owner.

A slave is more extreme than a submissive.  Everyone differs just where the dividing line is.

I disagree, DS.

You could have a woman who you consider a slave, others may consider her submissive. The only definition that counts is her owners.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: What is the difference between a submissive and a slave? (6/26/2011 8:57:42 PM)

i have to disagree with DS, too -- one of the most "pious" self-professed slaves i've dealt with is not at all what i would consider a slave to be, but her definition seems to work for her relationship. i wouldn't consider her extreme in any way, and she's only obedient on the surface, or as it suits her. =p
wheras others i've known who call themselves submissives or who don't use a label at all have been open to very extreme forms of play, or see obedience as the only reason they are here on earth and consider themselves 5 bazillion% owned. =p

the definitions are flexible and subjective; i think it would be best for the OP to simply do some searching and read past threads, and then maybe develop a more specific question.

Submissives have Dom/mes and slaves have Masters/Mistresses. Not much else I can tell ya for sure. lol Other than that, there are as many definitions as there are people.

Well unh, in a pinch we could always go with English: A slave is an individual who is wholly subject to another.

I left out "property" cuz ya never know who's watching. [:D]

I know a few slaves who can only call the owners "Sir". Guess that tosses your theory out.

Nice one!

It is as Kirata has said, one has but to seek the meaning of the word. A slave is as chattel, a possession for which the owner is responsible in entirety.

How well they bake cookies...

Slaves tend to make the best cookies
Subs tend to make the best pastries.

You know I would've thought that that generalization would be broad enough to cover it. But there are is an entire contingent of folks that see the dividing line as some sort of internal mental state. For instance, here's one I just heard:

Sub: Someone like Carol... submissive by personality... generally submissive to the world at large.
Slave: Someone like... well... a lot of posters here... dominant by personality, submissive by relationship orientation. Submits only to one.

How "far" the dynamic went was a totally separate distinction. In his world, you can have crappy subs & slaves or good ones.

that's just fucking stupid to my eye. assuming carol does indeed think the way you describe <what jeff thinks is right IS right, etc.), then to me she is way fucking deep into the slave head space.

i think maybe the problem is a fucking apples and oranges thing. submissive is a type, a personality trait, and a slave is a state. we all can agree that not all submissives are slaves, and also that most slaves are submissives, but not fucking all of them.

as an aside, i think i fucking love this aneka chick, she's all fucking sweetness and light, calm reason, piety, politeness and shit, and has the fucking harshest most uncompromisingly extreme views on what constitutes a slave. it's fucking great!
