Today is Canada Day. A day to celebrate Canada and what it means to be Canadian.  Anybody who has spent any time in Canada will agree that it is a place unlike any other, so I thought a thread for us to talk about Canada and what makes it unique would be a good thing. So that’s the question: What makes Canada special to you.

I’ll start…

Many countries trace their sense of national identity back to a battle, it’s very common. Canada is no different in this respect. What is different about Canada is that the battle in question was thousands of miles from Canada, in a war that had nothing directly to do with Canada, fought to defend a small country with which Canada had no particular ties or interest. The muddy fields of Belgian Flanders are where the idea of Canada as an independent nation as opposed to a self-governing colony was born. A country that sends its sons to fight and die in far distant places, not for gain or national interest, but for for what is right, to oppose aggression, and to give peace a chance.

We don’t contribute an awful lot materially to the cause, but Canada brings a moral weight that far exceeds it's physical power to the table. If Canada is sending troops, you know the cause is just. This is just one of the things that makes Canada different to me, we ARE the good guys.

ETA: Oh yeah, our beer is freaking good and our women are the hottest!!

Happy Canada Day!

As for the rest, I can't really comment... most of what I know about Canada comes from South Park (just kidding)

You guys ALWAYS threw the friendliest and most fun Grateful Dead shows. I think smoking pot with the local cops outside Copps Coliseum helped with that impression a lot.
I am also often impressed with those wholesome beautiful women your country is so famous for.
I'd say the only drawback is the Canadian fascination among the techie crowd is their obsession with re-runs of Dark Shadows.
Happy Canada Day my friend!

Happy Canada Day!!!

My family used to go camping every summer. My parents loved the wilderness. As beautiful as all of our wild areas were (and are!), they were no more beautiful than Canada's when we went there (1973, maybe?).

How does a Canadian get 50 people out of a swimming pool? He says, "Would you please get out of the swimming pool?"

Canada is to me just a version of the United States.  A less populated, slower moving, more polite and clean, and &^@%#&%@# colder version.

Or else someone yells out....."Time to head to Bingo!"

All kidding aside...for now, I find one of the uniqueness to Canada is the diversity a person finds just travelling from province to province or even just across one province. If you seek first class shopping or a cultural life, we have larger cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver which offers a world class cosmopolitan way of life. We have the beauty of the Muskoka's and the northern parts up to James Bay which offers world class fishing, hunting and one of the best wilderness areas for those who want to escape from some or all the modern conveniences.

We have Algonquin Park, Point Pelee , Killarney Provincial Park; just to name a few. For those who are interested in history, we have an authentic reproduction of the pioneer settlements in Upper Canada Village, Canada's Wonderland, The Royal Exhibition, Ontario Place, Parliament buildings in Ottawa and in Toronto, ROM (Royal Ontario Museum),  Science North and countless others.

edited to add:

West Edmonton Mall
CN Tower
Niagara wineries
Peggy's Cove
Bay of Fundy
Niagara Falls
Jasper
Okanagan Valley

ROFL

Well Steven, you should travel to the the west coast of Canada and you'll be surprised at the more moderate weather they have compared to the prairie province or Ontario!

A lot of people think that, but they are mistaken. Canada is not America lite, we are a different people with a very different outlook and mindset. We have different values.

What I have always thought most remarkable is that when there needs to be a military presence seen as neutral or with the best interests of all involved. Canada gets called on more than most.
That's an impressive credential

And we have the longest undefended border with a neighbouring country.

How is that ONLY, Canada's distinction though?

Well on the surface you'd think that was a shared accomplishment, but think on it a bit....just what would you guys be defending that border from?

Happy Canada Day to My neighbors to the..........  East.

(Yeah, I'm one of the few folks who can get away with that.)

My knowledge is rather limited, but the special part from My perspective would be the countryside.  You can't ask for more beautiful scenery that seems to stretch on forever.

For the fact that Canada had/has a share in ensuring that this status remains as it is. As an FYI, my earlier posts also points out various other distinctions that is Canada. Any other elaboration on my part will only lead to gross misinterpretations that will degrade into a "who's better" and that is a debate I will NOT go down that route.

Your view of Niagara Falls is so much better than ours.

I've not had the opportunity to visit anywhere else, but I really would like to. Vancouver and Nova Scotia especially interest me, as I hear they're really beautiful.
