You do realize that there are other ways to be patriotic besides glorifying war?

But folks, your problem then is with the National Anthem itself.

As for this case, it's the college's choice about whatever the anthem is.

I changed the wording because I was addressing that to will by accident.... I know he knows there are other ways to be patriotic

I DO think a rousing rendition of "God Bless America" would solve the problem and not get the pacifists panties in a bunch.

I think it is both because it is about war, and that it demands allegiance to country over god....

I was raised that patriotism is a call for scoundrels and worse, a way to manipulate people into fighting for things not in their best interests. I was also raised that one has to act on their conscience. Sort of like Thoreau and Civil Disobedience....if the government has immoral laws, then people of good conscience must break those laws.

I respect religious feelings of not wanting to be a part of a state, yet existing within a state peaceably as much as possible. It can be a precarious position that has landed more than one person in jail... conscientious objector status was not always available.

If your god tells you war is bad, do not fight in war... and your country's anthem glorifies it, well, it becomes a quandary, doesn't it?

Gosh, I must have missed that part of the song completely!

Is it in the second verse or something?

United States National Anthem: http://www.usa-flag-site.org/song-lyrics/star-spangled-banner.shtml

ETA: last verse:  Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Thanks Greedy.

"And this be our motto: "In God is our trust.""

When the cause is just, the song notes.

How about the whole thing? The star spangled banner is a battle symbol, a battle standard.... something that flies when you go to war. Our country was born out of revolution...our anthem is about that, it is not about the founding of our country through words (the constitution), nor about its many wonders... it is about war.

But then that's not where your claim started....it's what you've shifted to claim.

Really technically, it's about surviving a battle.

Sometimes that's the only difference between the winners and losers.

The winners survive.

It also glorifies the war, which goes against their pacifist views. But whatever. So they don't want to sing a song. Pardon me if I'm the only one here who is thinking "Whoop de fuckin' doo".

Same here.  I don't give a rat's patootie.  I always wondered how the C&W industry made patriotism almost mandatory, why prayers and/or the Banner are performed at sporting events, and why the military does flyovers at various sporting events.

Don't the [god(s) of your choice here] have more important things to do than watch over sporting events?  Does every public event require a demonstration of patriotism?
