Well said, Arpig. I like the current South African constitution for instance, where the the strong provisions on the right to equality are more detailed than in say, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

But it was the US constitution and Bill of Rights which served as a model for this and other such charters.

Thank you sunshine, very much for this.

My pleasure.  It was actually the first thing I thought of!

I like that no matter what the topic or question, sooner or later you'll find a way to make the answer be the Grateful Dead. Now I'm not sure of the validity of this approach from a scientific point of view, but I admire the dexterity with which you do it.

I do have a favour to ask though, could you please try to post a link to a somewhat relevant song when you do. I am very much enjoying them.

What do I love about America? What it stands for. Not to US citizens, or too foreign leaders, but what America means to the man in the street the world over.

The idea. America is an idea, the idea that freedom can be made to work. That just maybe a country can work based on the idea that a person should be as nearly free as can be arranged, that a man can make his own way, and that a people made up of just such men can as well.

The dream. America is a dream. it is a dream of freedom hidden in the hearts of billions of oppressed people the world over. Maybe they can get to America, or maybe America can come to them, or maybe even, they can make their own America wherever they live.

The hope. America is a hope. The hope that freedom will survive, and that in time it will spread. That like an insidious disease, the germ of freedom spreads out from America.

The promise. America is a promise, a promise made to the people of the world. That as long as it stands, as imperfect and often off track as it may get at times, the idea will not die.

You have probably noticed by now that I haven't really mentioned anything that actually applies to or affects the people of the USA. That's because America doesn't belong to the people of the U.S., it belongs to everybody else. America is not the same thing as the USA. The USA belongs to you, it is your country, yours to figure out and to do whatever you want with. But America, the idea, dream, hope, and promise that is America, that belongs to the rest of us, and you are only the caretakers of America. And no matter how powerful the USA gets, America will always be infinitely stronger.

Do what you will with the USA, but take good care of America, we have entrusted it to you, please don't fuck it up.

Take the idea of America into your hearts and make it part of you, keep the dream of America alive in your hearts, let the hope of America flourish in your hearts. And keep the promise. it's a promise your ancestors made when they wrote those words that echo in the heart of every free person and every person yearning to be free: We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, ...

Noble words that made a weighty promise, one that has been entrusted to you to keep.

Except whilst you have innocent people in Guantanamo it is less and idea and more a fantasy.

I love the way America looks after its poor.
I love the way America looks after its racial minorities.
I love the way America looks after Israel.
I love the way America looks after the earth's resources.
I love the way America looks after it's finances.
God bless the American way....

Except that you didn't read what you quoted. It is the U.S. Government that is responsible for holding people in Guantanamo Bay. And in the piece you quoted, he specifically states: "America is not the same thing as the USA."

While I'm sure you're hoping for a far more enraged response to your attempt to derail a celebratory thread, you really should pay attention to what is posted before you quote and dispute it. Rather than being offensive and inflammatory, your post is merely humourous, not for it's innate wit, but for the epic nature of the fail that it is.

Trolling. You sir, are doing it wrong in every way. Please go practice elsewhere, and come back when you have the degree of skill expected of trolls on these boards. We have high standards and we expect you to live up to them.

Calm down, no one is trolling. I think you perhaps didn't read my statement, I feel you cannot distinguish America from it's Government and indeed past Governments, whilst the people of America do nothing about its Governments actions.

Thanks, surprised nobody has shot me yet as it is their right to bear arms, presumably to shoot people

PhilSlave -> RE: Things I Love About America (7/5/2011 4:13:08 PM)

The right to arms is definately for that. If only America could see itself as the rest of the world sees it.

Nothing wrong with Lager, I like a few pints of Stella in my vest also. :)

You're entitled to that opinion, and indeed to express it. However to do so on a thread created for people to list the things they like about the U.S. in celebration of their national day is obviously an attempt at trolling.

The fact that you choose to quote a post, the whole point of which is to differentiate between "America" as an ideal and the reality of the USA shows that you did not actually understand the post you quoted.

Trolling is more than simply saying things designed to annoy people, it is an art form. It requires careful thought and a thorough understanding of the material. Your post clearly demonstrated a complete lack of such understanding. Therefore, I am correct in my assessment that you are simply not up to the high standard of trollishness that we have come to expect on CM.

I do admire your zeal and dedication, however, you simply are not ready for play at this level. As I said before, you need to hone your craft before you attempt it here. We have only the very best trolls on CM. I suggest you go to Fetlife.com and practice there. They have a much lower standard, and are very accepting of trolls who are just setting out on their careers.

You do show a lot of promise, you have a good grasp of the basics, but you need seasoning. I do look forward to your return in a year or two, when, if you work hard and remain dedicated, you may well be one of the great trolls of CM.

You see, you have already proved I was not trolling, as I reacted to a thread post strongly because I feel strongly about those people in Guantanamo kept there by "America". Had I been a troll, I'm sure my response would have been far less heartfelt in my disgust for America doing this.
