but only if you're a hypocrite.

It seems that while Sgt. 1st class Sean Gittens was good enough to risk his life, to ultimately lose his power of speech and use of his legs, for America; he still isn't good enough to live in the Lilly-white subdivision known as Knob Hill. Or should that be "snob hill"?

The news source is left-slanted, but they have a point.  It's illegal to discriminates because of the guy's skin color or veterans' status, or his disability.  Pick any one.  He could have a slam dunk lawsuit if he chose.  But he'd have to live among the defendants.

They might find themselves running afoul of federal fair housing statutes.

I hope the Vets in the area make this "home owner's association" a living hell in the local media ... " a small home will drag the value down" fuck them, HUD ought to at least check out everybody's story as well.

Knob Hill says it all ironicaly, but in this country it is known and experienced by many  former servicemen in times of peace and war have been given short shrift by government and public alike, and that is why many of the homeless in Britain are ex forces. Fine in times of war, one's kudos is elevated for a time, but fuck help you if you come back damaged, you are of no use to anyone, least of all a, all party government mentality that seeks profit not loss.

I am just wondering when it will be that servicepeople wake up and understand they are being used and the machine doesn't care, once one has outlived their usfullness, you become a problem and little else.

Who knows what the truth is, but since this is very close to where I live, Google gave me this when I checked.

http://knobhill.org/

As your Board of Directors, we want to advise you of an ongoing situation involving the Homes For Our Troops organization.

A veteran and his family, currently living in Knob Hill, are waiting for a home to be constructed on Knob Hill Circle. We have been discussing proposed plans with HFOT, but we still have not received plans consistent with your neighborhood covenants. HFOT has issued a press release that has led to negative comments about our neighborhood. We want to ensure you that we are considering both your interests and the interests of the veteran as we continue negotiations with HFOT.

Please understand that any suggestion that this Board of Directors does not welcome this deserving family into our neighborhood could not be further than the truth. Many of the board members are veterans themselves and many neighbors have expressed interest in this project. This is simply ensuring this deserving family receives the home consistent with the neighborhood covenants (and that they very much deserve)
We regret the negative comments and will continue to update you as appropriate.

Sincerely,
Knob Hill Board of Directors

He has a valid suit based upon a number of reasons. None of them would force him to live among them.

Will be interesting once that lawsuit is filed.

Neighbourhood associations here are within their legal rights to create standards for the properties within their neighbourhood. If a person does not wish to comply with those standards they should look elsewhere for housing.

I prefer to have the minimal amount of interference in what I can do on MY property so I chose the area in which I purchased property carefully. I have, even more freedom, than my neighbours across the road. They live in one county and I in another.

There is one community not far from where I work that is very VERY strict as to how existing buildings are being maintained and what can be built. It is less discrimination and more, the community has decided how they want their town to look. If I were going to purchase property there, I would do so knowing that I would have to conform to their community standards.

Building on the 2700 square foot home was to begin this Friday. Homes for Our Troops purchased the land in December and preparations for building the home have been ongoing over the past month. These homes are a reflection of the gratitude of the community and are given mortgage free to the veterans once complete.

Homes for Our Troops received building permits for the project and has been working closely with the Knob Hill Board of Directors, making multiple changes to the plans for the home as requested. The written approval came from Knob Hill BOD President Rick Trump on June 2nd. Late last week, a lawyer for the HOA served the contractors on site with a cease and desist letter to stop the preparation of the build site. Facing strong opposition from the Property Owners Association, the Knob Hill Board of Directors and the Property Owners Association met again on June 20th, just four days before the planned kickoff of the home build. Homes for Our Troops was then notified that the house plans do not meet the Knob Hill standards and the original approval was thus rescinded. Homes for Our Troops has now been told that it must begin anew the entire approval process and that the house needs to be at least 3400 square feet and multi-level to even be considered.

A drawing of the home is included.

Moving goal posts this way rarely speaks of the desire of a community to have a certain look, and speaks directly to the fact that the community has a certain look they feel the military family wont fit in too.

There is a difference.

The story would not pull up....no telling what it said considering the source.....
The man bought a home in a subdivision with a covenant. He agreed to the covenant before he bought the house. They allow flags/poles. The man wanted a bigger one. I would never buy in a subdivion for this very reason, but he did and is there by constrained by such. Many people in the subdivision have flags on poles. All with in the stated size.

In my opinion he accepted the rules he should live by them. He could have bought in an area without such constraints.

LaTigresse -> RE: A very obscene way to show how people are supporting our troops... (7/5/2011 7:19:14 AM)

I completely understand what you are saying and the way the piece is written is certainly biased in the veteran's favour. I am only curious as to the facts, as they unfolded, and how they would present themselves and change the overall outlook of the situation if they were presented without any bias at all.

Just the facts and the time line.......excluding any emotional bias. If indeed it would still be as obvious a case of discrimination or just piss poor handling of the application of community tenents.

My instincts tell me the community is using/hiding behind a vague guide line to discriminate against the family. But it would be interesting to know all of the facts to determine if indeed that is the case.

I cant see this not ending in a suit if what the builders are saying is true. If it isnt, then I dont see the point of a suit. Will be interesting to follow.

multi-level to even be considered.

The veteran cannot walk so his hom,e being multi leveled would put a limit on his mobility even inside his own hoime. I think this has a lot more to do with the color of the vet's skin than it does anything else.

LaTigresse -> RE: A very obscene way to show how people are supporting our troops... (7/5/2011 7:24:20 AM)

The sad thing is that the association probably has the better legal arsenal unless a human rights group gets behind the soldier's family.

tazzygirl -> RE: A very obscene way to show how people are supporting our troops... (7/5/2011 7:26:49 AM)

I dont have enough information to make this racial. I do have enough information that these people obviously did not want this family in their neighborhood and the reason isnt house size or resale values.

I cant imagine the ACLU isnt looking into this. Not to mention many Veteran groups.

And sadly, a lot of how it goes, will be determined by who lives in the neighbourhood and who they know.

The HOA may truly have screwed themselves.

Ahhhhhhhh yep!

pahunkboy -> RE: A very obscene way to show how people are supporting our troops... (7/5/2011 8:09:21 AM)

I would never buy a place that had a HOA.   Mom did...tho... she got some heat- I told her to blab and tell everyone you are running for the Board.   Guess what?   The heat went away.
