"Greens leader Bob Brown lodged a notice in parliament late Thursday that he intended to call for an official inquiry into News Limited to satisfy the Australian public that its work practices did not echo those used in London.When parliament resumes in mid-August following the winter recess, Brown said he would urge the communications minister to order a review of Murdoch's Australian group, which has a virtual monopoly over the newspaper industry."

This appears to have been a clear breach of the Data Protection Act, which would allow such a disclosure only if it was in the public interest. Meantime the latest buzz is that DOJ also is considering or even actually investigating Murdoch under the FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) as he is a US citizen and bribing foreign governmental employees for economic gain is a crime in the United States.

Status: offline 		Its not being sent to the regulators for any rework. The regulators decide if someone is fit and proper to run a media outlet. Parliament can only decide on plurality, IE does Murdoch hold too big an interest in UK media outlets.

Murdoch had a deal with the regulator, he could sell off Sky News, then his bid for BSkyB would be acceptable, since he would only control the three papers he now has. Today Murdoch said he was going back on that deal, so parliament asked the regulator to look at the issue again.

BBC`s flagship "Newsnight" programme announced there was a rumour from the Times (Murdoch owned) that Murdoch was going to close all his newspapers, since the big money is now in satellite broadcasting. This all seems cynical on Murdochs part, but I expected nothing less.

The bit about the DOJ was also on newsnight, as was a story that some American investors had filled a lawsuit against Newscorp. Thanks for the DOJ link.

Status: offline 		Sorry, you  are not conversant on the idiom I used. Hunt sent it back for a reconsideration, considering the new allegations, to the regulators as to whither News core was "fit and proper" to run Sky I believe the term of the art was., in the article.

Yes, it's good to see that there is at least one politician prepared to stand up to Murdoch here. There's a bit of history to this story that needs to be considered.

Murdoch's group controls something like 60% of Australian print media. Murdoch's "The Australian" mouthpiece literally "declare[d] war" on Brown's Green party in an editorial a few months ago. The editorial set as its goal "the destruction of the Greens" as a political force. This is an unprecedented astonishing position for a 'serious' newspaper to adopt - it's reducing a flagship 'serious' broadsheet to the level of Fox or worse (if such a thing is possible. Is Pravda still published?).

Apart from the politics, there is another reason for the hostility between Murdoch's rags and Sen Brown. Brown is a veteran politician, one of the few whose reputation for integrity, honesty and acting according to his principles has grown over the years. That alone is sufficient to cause Murdoch and his ilk to view him with suspicion.

I wish I could feel more optimistic about the probable outcome . ATM, I can't see Murdoch's monopoly coming under serious threat here. However if events in the UK keep going the way they're currently going .... who knows?

Also please bear in mind my bias - I vote for the Greens

ABC-TV here reported last night that the combined profits of all Murdoch print media in the UK was c$500 million pa. BSkyB reports an annual profit in the region of $1.2 billion. Go figure ....

Status: offline 		It now appears that Rebekah Brooks phoned ex-PM Gordon Brown to say the Sun was about to print a story on his baby sons medical condition. Brown now says he has been told the evidence was claimed illegally. In my view Brooks must have known that. The Sunday Times also ran a story that Brown had bought a flat at cut price from Robert Maxwell, who owned Mirror group newspapers using illegal means to obtain info.

This now makes all the Murdoch newspapers directly involved in the scandal. Will Murdoch cut Brooks lose to save the deal ? Bigger still, will American investors cut Murdoch loose ?

Apparently it's also illegal for US business people to bribe foreigners - and there appears no dispute that NI was bribing the UK police. Daily the allegations become more detailed and compromising. Its tentacles are spreading in every direction.

It's becoming almost impossible to predict the next day's revelations. However, it seems safe to predict that they will exceed expectations

Is this the best show in town?

Bang on on both points. It's next to impossible to believe that all the nefarious dealings at NOTW weren't replicated not just across the Murdoch stable but in most of the newspapers. And across the world. If a Murdoch paper is willing and able to hack into the private records of a British Prime Minister, is it unimaginable that it'd do similar to Joe Q. US Public?

And I wait with baited breath to see just how far into the police services the rot goes.

I wonder if Murdoch will end up jumping off his yacht just like Maxwell before him?

Indeed I have, Moonhead: I'm checking it regularly as it unfolds. The Brown story is at the top at present.

This is not just about their morals, but their ability to cock a snook at the top of government itself. Public outrage over the phone-hacking of the ordinary relatives of murder victims is one thing, but government members themselves falling foul of such unpleasantness is something else again. We need a bit of the latter to get things moving along nicely. Which it does seem to be. :-)

On the other hand, there are elements of the mother of all parliaments willing to pass an act that'll prevent Murdoch from buying up BSB outright.
(In the meantime, they'll just waste Murdoch's time and money by failing to approve his bid, in the hope that he'll give up and go away if they drag their feet enough.)

Status: offline 		Moonie, it seems that the latest word is that parliamentary motion asking Murdoch to desist with his bid for BSkyB is going to pass in the House of Commons. Tellingly it is going to attract across-the-board support, the Cameron's centre-right Conservatives, the (nominally) centrist Liberal Democrats and left- leaning Labour all declaring they'll vote in favour.

Talk is now turning to whether the News International quasi-monopoly is good for democracy in the UK. The prospect of NI either losing its print assets or being broken up is no longer in the realm of the hypothetical. The share price is headed south at a rate of knots.

It's not looking pretty for the champion of free speech. It couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

Status: offline 		I wish I could report similar advances against Murdoch's monopoly here.

Thus far only the Greens have challenged Murdoch's power - for which they pay a daily price in the treatment News Corp media dish out to them. The two major parties are craven in their silence.

Mind you there's bound to be lots more revelations to come. There has been any number of academic studies that draw attention to the perils of a media monopoly, and to how Murdoch's business interests and political agenda colour his media's reporting of the news here. So no one can claim they weren't warned when Murdoch's abuse of his media power here catches up with him, as it inevitably will.

The Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, has been getting FOI (Freedom of Information) requests from News Limited, and he has been answering them by Press Release.

Unfortunately, I think he has stopped doing this, but he may be re-invigorated by this mess.
