Looks like Murdoch tossed in the towel on his Sky bid -  http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/cutline/news-corp-drops-bid-bskyb-140129329.html

"In the wake of the phone hacking scandal that's rocked Britain, News Corp. has dropped its $12 billion takeover bid for BSkyB.The company made the announcement on Wednesday just as British lawmakers were preparing to vote on a motion calling for Rupert Murdoch to give up his pursuit of the satellite television broadcaster."We believed that the proposed acquisition of BSkyB by News Corporation would benefit both companies," News Corp. chairman Chase Carey in a statement. "But it has become clear that it is too difficult to progress in this climate.""
"Yeah, the natives are getting way to restless around here."

The news made my day

American readers will be charmed to learn that their country and its tax system is making a positive contribution to the lizard king's welfare.

It appears that over the past 4 years, Murdoch's News Corp generated $10.4 billion profits, paid zero tax and, in fact, received $4.8 billion in "taxes" from the IRS. Of course subsidising billionaires means that the US can no longer afford to provide welfare payments to many of those who really need it. Capitalism at its imaginative best! And it couldn't go to a nicer or more deserving billionaire could it?

You can read all about it here

Indeedies. The only questions are:
* Where to stick it; and
* How much lubricant NOT to use.
OUCHIES! [:D]

Likewise Brits. It's unlikely the repulsive old reptile will lose much of his vast fortune, but it *is* being suggested by a growing number of pundits that he's going to have to ditch his UK newspaper titles in order to have a chance at BSkyB. God, I will love that *so* much. I honestly can't think, right now, of anything that will change British political life so much for the better.

LadyConstanze -> RE: News of the World (7/14/2011 4:11:04 AM)

I understand that the US authorities are now investigating as well, as apparently there is evidence or "strong suspicions" that phones were hacked of 9/11 victims...

What are all those people going to do without such a well balanced, objective and fair network like FOX? Where are they going to get their information from and who will spoon feed them their political opinion?

PeonForHer -> RE: News of the World (7/14/2011 4:33:40 AM)

Hmmm. Read an article recently on that point. I grudgingly have to accept that it made valid points in favour of e.g. The Sun. One of these was that, without that paper, the slack in the right wing printed media would be taken up by The Mail and The Express, both of which are, if anything, even more nastily right wing than The Sun.

What's worse is that the former papers are more fawning over celebrities and the establishment in general than The Sun - we don't get to read about their adulteries, love-children or bonking with their secretaries or young lads on Wimbledon Common: they're more inclined just to feed us all what the celebs' PR people give us. The Mail pushes a line that's about as close as one can get to that of the US's Tea Party, albeit in a much more constipated, British way.

As for The Express - a worrying little sign of things, perhaps, to come, yesterday. This was that while all the papers - including Murdoch's - led with the hacking scandal, The Express led with a story about 'fury erupting' as it had been decided (allegedly) to award non-Brit EU members pensions in this country. It really did look like the editors had panickily thought 'Oh my God - people are blaming the rich for being baddies with this Murdoch stuff. That will never do! Squawk! Quick - bring everyone's attention back to the naughtiness of people at the bottom!'

The Sun's a lot less little englanderish than the Express or the Mail, but that's mostly because it's the chosen paper of the Asian chav. You couldn't see the Mail going after that demographic, could you?

Looks like the 'silent partner'  behind Murdoch is jumping into the fray -

"Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a major shareholder in Rupert Murdoch's scandal-hit News Corp. organisation, on Thursday said under-fire executive Rebekah Brooks "had to go"."For sure she has to go, you bet she has to go," News Corp.'s second largest shareholder said of Brooks on BBC's Newsnight programme.Brooks, who is due to face MPs next week over claims that the now defunct News of the World newspaper hacked phones while she was editor, is the chief executive of News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corp."

The Saudis don't like it when you start costing them real money.

So is Murdoch gonna pay any heed to his moneybags, and toss the redhead to the wolves?

tweakabelle -> RE: News of the World (7/14/2011 6:46:33 PM)

The chances of Murdoch's media monopoly and activities coming under parliamentary scrutiny here in sunny Australia have risen considerably in recent days.

Powerful Greens leader Bob Brown is openly calling for a wide ranging inquiry into media practices and structure (for 'structure' read 'Murdoch's monopoly'). PM Gillard has declared herself open to such an inquiry, while describing press coverage of the climate change debate as "crap". Predictably, Righter-then-Genghiz Khan Opposition Leader and beneficiary of Murdoch's stamp of approval Tony Abbott sees no need for an inquiry.

It looks as if anti-Murdoch moves in the US continue to gain momentum Australia won't be too far behind.

Politesub53 -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 2:17:32 AM)

One down, two to go. Breaking news in the Uk is that Rebekah Brooks has resigned.

http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0715/hacking.html

FirstQuaker -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 3:12:51 AM)

Amazing how a word from the House of Saud, changed Rupert's mind, on Brooks.

I also see -

Britain's most senior police officer, Sir Paul Stephenson, was facing calls for his resignation last night after admitting that a News of the World executive arrested on suspicion of phone hacking was recently employed as his personal adviser.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8639069/Phone-hacking-Britains-most-senior-police-officer-facing-calls-to-resign-over-employment-of-former-NOTW-executive.html

Meantime the North American press is reporting the FBI is now investigating allegations regarding the hacking of the phones of 911 victims, including fireman and apparently police, after even one or more  GOP members of the congress stepped in and wrote letters -

"The decision to step in was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King and several other members of Congress wrote to FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly."

http://news.yahoo.com/ap-source-fbi-reviews-news-corp-9-11-220427472.html;_ylt=AmpENGZmglIMSkQOpW8msVs8KbIF;_ylu=X3oDMTNyMWxmbGx1BHBrZwNjMzg1ZGM4YS00NWRkLTNiNDEtOWY2OC0xODg1ZGIzNTkxMGYEcG9zAzMEc2VjA1RvcFN0b3J5IFBvbG90aWNzU0YgQ29uZ3Jlc3NTU0YEdmVyAzQ4ZjNlYTIwLWFlYTAtMTFlMC04ZDZmLWVmNDBjNDRkMDgzNA--;_ylg=X3oDMTF2cXZzaGRvBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANwb2xpdGljc3xjb25ncmVzcwRwdANzZWN0aW9ucw--;_ylv=3

And of course they have managed to outrage Brazil, when it was charged that the relatives of the innocent Brazilian electrician gunned down by British police in the aftermath of the Tube bombing were also the victims of this hacking.

And then even the US lumpen press (in a  land where Murdoch as seen as the patron of the GOP, in spite of much evidence to the contrary) is starting to question jsut exactly what Murdoch politics really are - http://news.yahoo.com/hacking-scandal-casts-light-murdochs-politics-084547353.html;_ylt=AsQoCAcGKOPr1GX8MLxTztms0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTM3dXNjY3BlBHBrZwNiODRhZWYwOS0zMTBlLTMwMWEtODkzYi0yYjg1YjAxMWE4YzAEcG9zAzEEc2VjA1RvcFN0b3J5IEZQBHZlcgM3M2QyYzk3MC1hZWMxLTExZTAtYjdiZi1hYmIyZDZlMDNhMTE-;_ylg=X3oDMTFpNzk0NjhtBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANob21lBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25z;_ylv=3

Seatonstomb -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 6:04:05 AM)

Should it be proved that the management or director colluded in the commissioning of these crimes then the proceeds of crime act should be used to recover all income gained by News International/News Corp and profits and benefits thereafter gained from these illegal activities. They have made money from crime - just another form of organised crime.

FirstQuaker -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 10:45:47 PM)

Looks like the first North American Murdoch casualty has occurred -

"The controversy claimed its first Murdoch executive in the United States as Les Hinton, chief executive of the Murdoch-owned Dow Jones & Co. and publisher of the Wall Street Journal, announced he was resigning with immediate effect."

"Hinton, 67, has worked for Murdoch's News Corp. for 52 years and is one of the media baron's staunchest allies. He became head of Dow Jones in December 2007.
He was chairman of Murdoch's British newspaper arm during some of the years its staffers are alleged to have hacked cell phones, but testified to a parliamentary committee in 2009 that he had seen no evidence abuses had spread beyond a single jailed reporter, Clive Goodman." - http://news.yahoo.com/wsj-publisher-quits-phone-hacking-scandal-205855939.html

tweakabelle -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 11:26:29 PM)

Signs of increasing desperation if not panic at chez Murdoch! All in all, it's hardly been the best week of Rupert's long life.

Brooks had been with News Corp for 22 years, Hinton appears to have spent his entire adult life in Murdoch's employ. Both were CEOs. Such executive level loyalists don't grow on trees, nor are they easily replaceable. Murdoch's interview with the WSJ, widely seen as an attempt to turn the tables on his critics, has backfired and whetted rather than diminished the appetite of those calling for Murdoch's blood.

Here in Oz, some evidence is emerging that one of Murdoch's publications was involved in privacy breaches - though not of the criminal nature we've seen in the UK, they're the first crack we've seen in the local branch of the News Corp monolith. More and more local commentators and politicians are finding their backbones, saying out loud that some examination of press freedom (ie Murdoch monopoly) is in order.

There's little evidence that either of the these resignations will satisfy Murdoch's critics. Seriously for Murdoch and his dynasty, there now appears no more serfs left between his family and the firing line. James Murdoch (the son and apparent preferred heir) is next in line, and it seems, firmly in the sights of the Murdoch empire's legion of critics. Many commentators are now suggesting James' chances of replacing Rupert at the helm of News Corp are shot to pieces. There's open speculation about the possibility of criminal charges against James.

Will Dad take the rap to preserve the son and the family business?

FirstQuaker -> RE: News of the World (7/15/2011 11:47:07 PM)

Well, I do not spend as much time crowing about this as others, because now the corporate world has seen the advantage of having such an media organization in their pockets and in furtherence of their ends, they will merely back some copycats to take the place of the Murdoch empire.

Keeping the public out of any real trouble for the corporate world is a goal they will gladly pay cashy money for. And I doubt they will make the mistake of putting all their eggs in one basket, both to keep more control of the thing and not letting another Murdoch get 'too big for his britiches,' and to prevent a local scandal from becoming worldwide disaster as this series of events are turning out to be.

And it looks like the Murdoch tenacles in China and Italy are also getting their dosage of inspection too. How Fox supporters reconcile with the Murdoch press being seen as too far in the pockets of the CCP in China, or their supporting the leftist Democratic party in Italy against the ceter rightists of Berlusconi's media empire and People of Freedom party with their supposed "conservative" credentials in the US I cannot say.

I dont think they are equals. There is no one who has succeeded with so little ability as Obama.

So how do you see Obama as being involved in this scandal of Murdoch's happening in the UK right now?

He must have had a hard time framing poor Murdoch on his last visit, especially with the minimal skill set you claim  Obama has.

Or do you think the black WASP told the monarch  to "take care of this wiseguy Murdoch" during his visit and thus detailed the British to bringing this champion down?

What you see in such posts is a desperate attempt to deflect from the issue at hand, while having no talking points.... you see, the people who tell them what to think and what to post have been oddly silent about the Murdoch scandal, and the Fox Drones have nothing to say because they do not think for themselves. Bringing up Obama is the fall back position... it is quite amusing, actually.

FirstQuaker -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 2:07:44 AM)

Looks like James Murdoch may be the next off the sleigh. Both the British and the North American press is saying the BSkyB board of directors is looking into his continual chairmanship of the board. -

"In a series of further developments, The Sunday Telegraph can also disclose today: • James Murdoch’s position as chairman of BSkyB is under review after the board agreed a special session to discuss his future." - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8642786/Phone-hacking-New-body-blows-for-Rupert-Murdoch.html

Politesub53 -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 2:34:58 AM)

I think so many top level staff have resigned that James Murdochs posistion is becoming untenable. Next weeks both Murdochs and Rebekah Brooks appear before a commons select committee. They will obviously not say anything to incriminate themselves, while a police investigation is going on, so I am wondering how things will go.
