As the poo spreads inexorably in Cameron's direction, the leaders of the UK's two non-Tory parties Clegg (Lib-Dems) and Millibrand (Labour) are both calling for a comprehensive review of media ownership and accountability.

Will a weakened Cameron be able to resist the public clamour for serious action against Murdoch and his monopoly? How long before Cameron turns on his erstwhile benefactor Murdoch in order to save his own position? And if that happens how will Murdoch possibly prevent even more contagion spreading across the Atlantic?

I'd imagine the next edition of Private Eye will be a collector's item! [:D]

FirstQuaker -> RE: News of the World (7/18/2011 8:21:00 AM)

The body count grows  -

"A clearly angry Sir Paul said he was stepping down after criticism over his decision to employ as a personal adviser Neil Wallis, the former deputy editor of the News of the World who was arrested on suspicion of phone hacking. " - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8644192/Sir-Paul-Stephenson-resigns-as-Metropolitan-Police-Commissioner-over-phone-hacking-scandal.html

Also it is reported that the New Corp board of directors in the US is evaluating Murdochs continuing role as chariman -

"Independent directors of New York-based News Corp. have begun questioning the company’s response to the crisis and whether a leadership change is needed, said two people with direct knowledge of the situation who wouldn’t speak publicly. Rebekah Brooks, the former News International chief who Murdoch backed until last week, was arrested yesterday in London. “The shell of invulnerability that Rupert Murdoch had around him has been cracked,” said James Post, a professor at Boston University’s School of Management who has written about governance and business ethics. “His credibility and the company’s credibility are hemorrhaging.”" - http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-17/murdoch-struggles-to-control-news-corp-.html

Politesub53 -> RE: News of the World (7/18/2011 11:23:11 AM)

His assistant commissioner, John Yates, has also resigned today. He led the 2009 inquiry into the hacking and found there was no case to answer. It would seem his inquiry consisted of asking the previous inquiry`s investigators, if they had found anything.

Oooooh, it must have been Murdoch trying to hide something. Either that or, based on his picture, he didn't lay off the bangers and mash soon enough.

Moonhead -> RE: News of the World (7/18/2011 12:33:51 PM)

Pretty rich from somebody who'd run screaming for a moderator the second somebody from Europe made a comment about morbidly obese Americans.

PeonForHer -> RE: News of the World (7/18/2011 1:51:56 PM)

""The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but not thought to be suspicious. Police investigations into this incident are ongoing."

- According to BBC News.

Right, who here reckons that Cameron will eventually have to resign over all this business? Last week, it looked like the whirlwind had zipped by the door of No 10. Now it's hovering closer again.

DomKen -> RE: News of the World (7/18/2011 3:01:19 PM)

Remember 5 years ago when no one doubted the editorial integrity of the WSJ? How times have changed. I wonder what changed?

Must be you that has changed. The link is exactly right in its facts and measured in its tone.

I suspect Cameron's future will depend in large measure on how much he can spread the collective blame/guilt around. The queue to brown nose Murdoch was a long one, with figures from every political party and it goes back a long way historically. I wouldn't dare put a limit on the number of public figures Murdoch has compromised or corrupted over the years.

It's worth remembering that NOTW wasn't the only paper involved in phone hacking, nor was the Tory-News Corp link an exclusive one. The genie is well and truly out of the bottle and no one really knows what the next sleazy revelation will be, who will be the next public figure to be compromised or even if Murdoch will succeed in containing the crisis to the UK.

But, at this point in time and on the information publicly available now, it's starting to look like, at a minimum, either Murdoch Snr. or Cameron will go (and possibly both). As they say in the newspaper business, watch this space ..... [:D]

Politesub53 -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 3:59:10 AM)

I will be surprised if Cameron goes. Labour are pressing for it but they were in deep with the Murdochs as well. I also suspect shareholders in the US may push out Murdoch Snr.

The interesting thing is Brooks said recently the worst is yet to come !

Moonhead -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 4:42:59 AM)

Brooks is obviously being set up as a fall guy for this. It's a bit like the sod at the Beeb who was promoted to a higher position in case they needed to fire somebody in order to shut the red tops up about Woss and his big haired friend bragging about shagging one of Satan's Sluts to her grandfather...

Aneirin -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 5:46:22 AM)

Is it just me, or is anyone else enjoying this story as it unfolds ?

SilverMark -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 5:55:30 AM)

I am amazed at how deep it all goes!...Might even get the PM?

Aneirin -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 6:12:59 AM)

With any luck !

But if it does, the gimp might get to realise his dream, which would be a disaster, for he has shown his mettle already.

DomKen -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 6:25:00 AM)

Have you heard that this scandal is an isolated incident and not indicative of the corporate culture at News Corp? Well not so much

Watching Brooks get grilled is just so damm fascinating .

Schadenfreude

SilverMark: Cameron has thus far managed to weasel out of catching any shit over this, though a colleague has asked in Parliament why sufficient grounds for firing Police administration don't seem enough to force a PM's resignation.
(Mind you, if Cassandra did resign, his bitch would probably take over as PM, and no fucker wants that at this stage, not even the lib dems...)

Aneirin -> RE: News of the World (7/19/2011 4:54:17 PM)

Somewhere down the line, this shit is going to hit the PM and that because it appears government needs publicity agents, who are often from the media industry to make them look good to the populace. What ever happened to government just doing what they were supposed to do, i.e. govern, why do they need publicists do they think they are celebrities or something ?

But for government tp align with media to sell the word, that was a stupid mistake, or is it, politics is about as trustworthy as media or even in the same vein, fact distorted to mean something else without blatantly lying.
