Rebekah Brooks has now been arrested by appointment, according to the BBC. This was done by means of her having an appointment at a Police Station. The difference between her being called in for an interview, and questioned under arrest, means that the police MUST have reasonable suspicion ( By law) that she has committed an offence. This doesnt mean guilty, it just safeguards her rights as per UK Law. IE the right to have a lawyer present.

Lucylastic -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 5:59:33 AM)

In a statement, police said: "The MPS has this afternoon, Sunday 17 July, arrested a female in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking.

"At approximately 12.00 hrs a 42-year-old woman was arrested by appointment at a London police station by officers from Operation Weeting together with officers from Operation Elveden and is currently in custody.

"She was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, contrary to Section1(1) Criminal Law Act 1977 and on suspicion of corruption allegations contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.

"The Operation Weeting team is conducting the new investigation into phone hacking.

"Operation Elveden is the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police. This investigation is being supervised by the IPCC.

"It would be inappropriate to discuss any further details regarding these cases at this time."

Brooks is due to appear before parliament's culture, media and sport select committee on Tuesday
just what Ive picked up:)

They just arrested Brooks.

tweakabelle -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 6:50:04 AM)

If she is charged with an offence, it might enable her to duck any inconvenient questions at the Commons on Tuesday on the grounds that the matter is sub judice.

Not being a lawyer, I am far from certain about this. But it seems difficult to me that she could be forced to answer questions on matters that are subject to court proceedings.

PeonForHer -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 7:12:37 AM)

Yep. That's a really screwy situation. The immediate problem is that a police investigation into Brooks could be compromised. Chances are that she won't be able to sit in the Commons for that grilling now. This will mean that it'll only be Rupert and James Murdoch who'll be there.

Wow, this is feverish stuff, isn't it?

Lucylastic -> RE: News of the World (7/17/2011 7:17:05 AM)

Oh I hope they have covered their arses and everything else before tuesday
I know theres been incompetence n corruption , but this is worldwide embarrassment otherwise...

Frigging hell, Sir Paul Stephenson's resigned now. If the Met Police Commissioner's job isn't safe, is even Cameron's position shaky?

Gadzooks. Interesting times, eh?

Give it a week, and we'll be reading about God's resignation, too . . . .

Frigging hell, Sir Paul Stephenson's resigned now. If the Met Police Commissioner's job isn't safe, is even Cameron's position shaky?

Gadzooks. Interesting times, eh?

Give it a week, and we'll be reading about God's resignation, too . . . .

These two paragraphs are tucked away at the end of the Guardian's report of Brook's arrest:

"Mark Lewis, the lawyer for the family of the murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler, whose phone was hacked by an investigator working for the NoW, said the timing of the arrest was "very odd". "The police might have thought that for operational reasons it was important that she didn't speak on Tuesday," he said.

The Labour MP Chris Bryant said: "It is unusual to arrest by appointment on a Sunday and that just makes me wonder whether this is some ruse to avoid answering questions properly on Tuesday in the Commons committee
."*

Conspiracy theorists should have a field day linking these comments with the resignation of the Met Police boss. Stephenson's resignation is odd to say the least, not only in its timing, but also in its stated aim of shielding PM Cameron from the scandal's fallout.

I'm finding to increasingly difficult to see how any of the Murdochs can survive this scandal. Already Millibrand has called for the break up of News Corp's media monopoly. Soon, News Corp's shareholders are going to be faced with a choice between the Murdochs and a viable company.

It could very well be that choice has already arrived.

Yep. It *is* looking decidedly fishy and the pundits are all very suspicious. The Met won't, presumably, be stupid enough to believe that this arrest will go without question in the Commons.

I'm damned if I know what's going on. But I bet we find out fast.
