Has anyone ever used a bark control collar on a sub? The type that gives a small shock when the dogs barks. I have one that is for small dogs and not very strong. But do not want to cause any damage to subs throat. I was thinking of using it when he is spanked as he likes to yell a bit. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you ,
Gypsy

It isn't the throat you could damage. You could stop the heart. No electricity play above the waist.

If you want to use one, around the thigh is recommended. Be aware that what is a small shock to a dog insulated by two layers of fur (guard hairs and undercoat) is a large shock to a human with zero insulation. And most of us dog owners won't use them on our dogs either.

I recall reading of a way to lower the voltage/shock on those things for this very purpose... but can't remember where, as it was several years ago.

Most dogowners don't use them cos it's kinda cruel...
There are also collars wich give a sent when noise is made... like citronella (if spelled correctly)

I thought of  spray collars, too.
I got citronella in my eyes from my dog-sit doggies and it was slightly damaging (over a few days), so I'd find a different oil if possible. They are charged up with cartridges, and I don't know if they are hackable.

A friend of mine owns a spray collar from walmart - it actually uses lemon and not citronella.  I found it for her when she wanted to use a shock collar on her dog.   She seems pretty happy with it.   Granted I have no idea what it would do to your eyes if you got sprayed but that never crossed my mind.  I know there is at least one brand out there that just does compressed air... but I would think any of these wouldn't be of much use to a human.

Carol doesn't bark. IF she did I'd probably just tell her to cut it out.

Insofar as all the concern about electrocuting your sub, not all shock collars are made that way. I saw one on Dog Whisperer where he actually consoled the distraught owner by first holding it up to his neck and triggering it then holding it up to hers. You could see by the look on her face that it wasn't much... a reminder rather than a slap.

They're illegal in most parts of Europe, though I possibly wouldn't put it on my dogs anyway as Dobies have a tendency to have weak hearts (apart from being amazing snorers, as the concerts left and right to my feet make obvious - they must be sawing down a forest) but then the doggie trainer we had booked last Saturday said I do most things right, it's just the beasts have trained me to give them attention whenever they want it (bloody hell, to be outsmarted by a dog, that does smart somewhat) while other half does much more wrong (that much for reading books about training dogs, snicker).

I have used them on humans and they are fine when being wrapped around the genitals, wouldn't want to attempt to use them above the waist. I doubt they will help much for a screaming subbie, I would think a gag would be much more effective ;)

I have never heard of a dog having a heart attack or getting a damaged throat from those collars.  I can't see why it would be different for a human.

People feel pets can't protect themselves and they set the standards higher than human standards . . . like less insect parts in their food etc.  Pet food is actually cleaner than people food.  i. e. Each of us eats an average of one pound of insects in our food every year.  I would imagine the first time a dog was maimed from one of those collars, they would have been pulled off the market.

The problems with shock collars is that people use them in ways they were not intended - like leaving them all all the time where they create pressure sores.  They are only meant to be worn for a few hours - just for training purposes.  How many people actually use them for that?  I've never met a person who didn't buy a shock collar with the intention of leaving it on 24/7.   How many people read instruction manuals? You don't see them pulled off the market because most people use them incorrectly and therefore it is technically not "faulty product."

Then you get this: pressure sore injury

Injuries are possible though... like this person who left their dog out and it rained making the collar malfunction.

Oh, and here is the vet's report.

Or this stupid place who put one on a boarded dog and didn't monitor it.

There is very very little monitoring of anything in the pet market, so since issues with e-collars tend to be owner related and since people keep buying them they certainly aren't going to be pulled off the market.  Just sucks for the dogs that most people don't actually want any knowledge about how things should be used.

People food does not contain "meat byproducts" and "meat meal":

"Meat meal can contain the boiled down flesh of animals we would find unacceptable for consumption. This can include zoo animals, road kill, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled, dying) livestock. Most shockingly, this also can include dogs and cats. That's right, your pets could be cannibals. Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser writes, "Although leading American manufacturers promise never to put rendered pets into their pet food, it is still legal to do so. A Canadian company, Sanimal Inc., was putting 40,000 pounds of dead dogs and dead cats into its dog and cat food every week, until discontinuing the practice in June 2001."

I only buy pet food that do not contain "meat byproducts" and "meat meal."(Or artificial colors, etc, etc.)

Newsflash - they are not available in most European countries, in fact highly illegal to put them on your dog, unless you got £20K to spare or fancy 6 months in prison! As a dog owner, I agree 100% - if you don't want to invest the time to train your dog properly and you take the short cut with a shock collar, you're simply don't deserve a dog. Most countries here also won't allow people to mutilate the puppies by cropping ears and docking tails because some brain dead idiot decided that breeding standard is cutting bits off, people who want a "certain look" in a dog should just go and get a stuffed toy.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1260363/Electric-collars-shock-pets-obedience-banned-Wales.html

The ban has meanwhile been extended all over the UK people here have complained about how difficult it is to stop their dog from running away, well duh, a good way to stop that is simply by training your dog to be obedient in surroundings where you can control them. What I find bloody marvelous is that people let their dogs run riot at home, but when they leave the house the dogs should be completely obedient pets, doesn't work that way, if your dog pulls you around on the lead and tells you where to go, then good luck calling your dog back - why should the dog listen if you're not the pack leader? Hopefully this will stop some idiots from getting that cute puppy on a whim and dumping said puppy as a grown dog because little puppy has grown into an unmanageable big dog.

It's absolutely possible to train a dog with out pain, in fact almost every breed responds a lot better to kindness, but don't get me started on dog owners who can't be bothered to actually work with their pets.
