It does rather depend on what I'm in the mood for.

I like Aqua in San Francisco both for the chef's handling of seafood and the unobtrusive and almost telepathic servers.

I also enjoy a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant called Yum Yum (I think the name might have changed) in San Francisco for their smoked tea duck. It was so good that before TSA started going overboard on its security theater, my wife would fly over with some whenever she was visiting me in Boston.

And in New York, I have a soft spot for Colicchio's Craft. As far as holes-in-the-wall go, there are just far too many that I like there to list.

It depends what I'm in the mood for. I generally don't care for the franchises. But in Jamestown, NY (less than 2 hours from me) there is a little place called Johnny's Lunch. Best Texas hot dogs you'd ever buy. And here in Erie, we have two places that are exceptional. The Plymouth is nicknamed Erie's living room because the place is so popular and inexpensive too. And Calamari's, yep they serve it, but I've never been brave enough to try it.

My favorite recipe happens to be one my sister gave me for homemade pierogies. The secret is the sour cream in the dough which makes them soft and delicious.

I'll keep that in mind next time I'm in the place, though I don't tend to go out often--I work nights.

Calamari done right is very good. Calamari done wrong can be like chewing a tire.

From what I hear, Calamari's does calamari right. I've still been leery to try it. But I'll bite the bullet at the very next opportunity.

NV, they used to have a five or six course sampler menu back then. If they still do, it's well worth the visit.

Eek, I just looked into them. They're closed!  They were bought out by Alexander's steak house in Cupertino.  I missed the opportunity... [:(]

I'm sorry to hear that about Aqua. It was one of the places where I enjoyed both the food and the service. I guess they never really recovered after Condy's death.

Speaking of steaks though, what do those of you who have tried it, think of Fred's Steaks from Schaub's at the Stanford Shopping Center? While not close to the best steaks I've had (or seasoned and grilled myself), I found them (particularly the tri-tip sirloin cuts) to be quite forgiving of beginners (read: overcooked by friends) and good for either baking or broiling. But it's a tad saltier than I'd like and with a taste perhaps more reminiscent of roast beef than steak.

Linger Longer, Leipolts in Johannesburg. South Africa. The best chinese ever was "Jumbo" Aberdeen harbour, Hongkong. The ambience, decor, service and of course the food is just unique.
Favorite recipe? Lots, but a good steak very underdone is absolute great. Apart from that i love the old danish way of cooking. Things like fried pigtails, pighearts in creem sauce, apple and prune stuffed roasted duck with red cabbage, fried flounder with aspargus potatoes and parsley sauce and of course the dessert above anything else, fresh picked strawberries with sugar and cream. I could jabber on.

One of the best dinners I ever made (besides the pheasant with truffles (got 'em at Maison de la Truffe in Paris)) was in San Jose. We had gone over to the coast after going to Ridge Vineyards, and there was a roadside farmer selling out of the back of his pickup at the road to Pescadero, on the PCH. We bought some beautiful fresh English Peas and artichokes (Pescadero calls itself the artichoke capitol of the world, IIRC) and went back to the apartment. I went up to Palo Alto and bought some amazing dry-aged prime ribeyes at Schaubs, and then went to the greengrocers across the way and picked up some Morels. I sauteed up the morels with the peas, some butter (from Ireland, I think), some sea salt, and a splash of Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenovettes 96. We had a 93 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots from Louis Jadot, and a 96 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages (I have a strange memory; I can remember stuff like this, and 16 digit numbers, but forget names.)
.

theres a little family owned chinese place here that discovered my Daddys weakness for spicy steamed crawdads... Everytime we go they bring Him a HUGE complimentary bowl and some rice noodle and chicken for the BabyDom.... Allergies are a huge concern with me so they make me general chicken and fried rice being mindful of my allergies... They are even teaching BabyDom chinese!!!

Favorite recipe at home is Colcannon.... irish potatoes and cabbage boiled all day.... drained then soaked in butter and herbs.... Daddy like this with traditional herb lamb leg and corn cobs done in the fire..... yum!!!!! cookout at my house anyone?!?!?

OK that all just sounds amazing.  Add to that, it was a fun read since I'm from that area.  I love Pescadero, and used to work in Palo Alto while living in San Jose.   That was an awesome read - thank you!

Best calimari I ever had was at the Three Amigos in Atlantic City. It was so fresh, and had a nice, light coating on it, fried lightly golden, yum. None of those chewy rubber bands like you get so often. no stale fishy taste. Mmmmmmm.
