Interesting rock n' roll statistic: the age of 27 has a near mythic status for premature deaths, e.g. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Richie Edwards... and now Winehouse!

Janis Joplin, James Dean... it seems a lot of bright lights burn out at 27
All amazingly talented people, but as I said to my son one day when discussing dead rock "gods",talent aside..and no matter how great, there is something to be said to being alive to celebrate ones 30 th birthday. How stupid, how sad...Rest In Peace Amy.

"Du Hast" is a real toe tapper.

Now you see, I've always viewed that piece as the soundtrack to a really big speeding ticket.

I don't think it is a matter of being a "hater." People tend to fall into one of two "camps" when it comes to the death of drug addicts. Those who feel it is a waste and sad that someone who is talented died so "tragically," and those who just don't have the pity to feel bad for someone who threw their life away.

My brother died of a heroin overdose, so it isn't like I haven't been "touched" by drug addiction in my life. A drug addict, beyond what they do to themselves cause pain for everyone close to them. It isn't pretty, it isn't fun.

I was not a fan of Amy Winehouse. I think it is ridiculous to talk about her death as so "sad" when the majority of us didn't know her. Wishing peace and condolences to her family is one thing. Something people do in general when hearing about a death.

Personally, I think we all, as people who aren't celebrities, look at the lives of Winehouse, Cobain, Joplin, Hendrix, Belushi, etc. as something we just can't seem to understand. After all, these people were all where they wanted to be in their careers, and to us they were living their dream, playing their music, making movies, whatever.

Amy Winehouse made a hit record that sold millions, won grammies. That was the goal. It is difficult to understand why when you reach your goal, you throw it away with stupidity. And yes, it is stupidity. It isn't like she was in denial about her addictions. She knew it, and did not go to rehab (no pun intended).

This doesn't hold true for Hendrix or Joplin (far more talented than Winehouse in my opinion, by the way), they were "victims" of their time and we didn't know anywhere near as much about addiction then, or the dangers these drugs could be.

I don't follow the idea that some people just like to party and get "caught up" in addiction without other issues. I doubt that most people who have been addicts or dealt with them on any level would agree.

So yes, Amy Winehouse is dead from drug use. She was not the most talented artist of our time, she was someone who had ONE record and was spinning out of control before she even put that album out.

Don't know her to "hate" her. But also don't know her to really care that much. All I think is that it is another person who wasted their life and did horrible damage to their family with drugs.

One small correction LL, she did go to rehab. For reasons only she knows and we certainly don't she left.

It's interesting that we have this illusion of "knowing" celebrities when in fact as a whole we don't. I think that's part of the reason we mourn when they die. The fact of it is we only know what is presented to us by the celebrity him/herself in public and in biographies and the garbage that is printed in tabloids and broadcast on TV shows like Entertainment Tonight. At best it's a shallow knowledge and amounts to virtually nothing at all.

I loved her voice & liked her "quirkiness" too.  I agree w/another poster, she had a very old soul.

RIP Amy, you'll be truly missed.

I wouldn't lump Hendrix in with Joplin or Winehouse in the first place, as he wasn't actually killed by an addiction. That one (which has been very well documented) was mostly down to his not realising that German sleeping tablets carried a much larger dose than American or English brands, and some twat of an ambulance man leaving him on his back so he drowned in his own vomit.

Still a lifestyle choice that left his life hanging in the balance of dosage and the talent,or lack thereof,of a first responder. Most responsible folks do not mix pills(especially one with unknown potency) and alcohol.I take pain meds...you can be fairly certain that I am well aware of what I do,and what I drink when I do need to take them.
Jimi's death was tragic...and yes probably not as self inflicted as others....but there is still a measure of responsibility laid at his door for not being around to celebrate his 30 th birthday.Someone who habitually steps off the curb sans checking traffic can be said to be courting being run down.....no?

True, but then there's also the fact that, given some of what's emerged about Monica Dannemann's role in his death over the last twenty years, it isn't anything like that clearcut.

(And these were sleeping tablets, not pain medication, which the poor sod didn't realise he was taking twice his normal dose of. This is hardly the Nick Drake thing of trying to justify a deliberate overdose as misadventure.)

Moon,I never meant to suggest it was a deliberate overdose....but taking sleeping tablets while drinking insane amounts of liquor is certainly death by misadventure.....and something rational people manage to avoid.Living to see ones 30 th,hell ones 40 and 50 th birthday is not asking all that much from a person....excess kills, whether it comes from addiction or just the need to drive a car real fast.

Apparently he was also taken to a hospital a good distance away which in part led to a DOA result. If I remember correctly after reading a few bios, he used barbiturates which have a very fine line between safe usage and overdose. Barbs have a wide number of uses but I think he used the sleeping variety, although they can be used to intoxicate too.

Your lack of understanding an artist is not surprising. You probably only do things for the money, most if not all artists perform for much deeper and sometimes darker reasons.

To see this is lost on you is par for the course.

The problem appears to that he thought he'd been given Mandrax, rather than German barbiturates with twice the dosage. And he definitely took the things because he was shattered and needed to sleep, not because he wanted to get loaded in this case.

Not usually my taste in music, but I found her quirkiness fascinating. RIP.

She was a rare bird.

Sorry to see her go but....not a big surprise on this end....just wished she'd lasted a bit longer (selfishly).

Beautiful stuff.

~FR~

I'm sorry, but some of the responses here are just too ridiculous.

"What a waste, when they (she, in this case) had such talent and had achieved such success ... etc."

"Success" by everyday simplistc monetary terms, perhaps; but as far as artistic terms, it actually matters more to some of these 'artistes' as to how much of the message actually comes across to a sufficient audience (at some point) as much as it matters the artistes innate ability to convey a message, which in these rare cases is undeniable regardless contemporaneous acceptance.

For some of them, it might be that they see the world as it is too vividly; for others, that they are too well adept at explaining it or revealing it too vividly; and heaven help those who just use their talent to find some way through the incessant onslaught of idiocy that is today's world in whatever way they can, even if exogenous means and end in that cause turn out to be one and the same on occasion.

What the fuck is up your ass? You said she hadn't gone to rehab, I pointed out she had. Stop the press you were wrong! Why is that such a problem for you?
