I mean obviously you're not tracking IPs to find twitter accounts because even if you wanted to you'd need twitter to be complicit in a scheme which opens them to massive liability for little or no gain, but I DO have to wonder how it came to be...

I'm assuming that the OP is following a fellow PR/Marketing person who is also involved in fetish and/or bdsm. The search by the site bods found the other person and looked who they were following...and found the OP.

I am not on Twitter, but when I joined Facebook, I was amazed at the number of "friends of friends of friends" that appeared for my consideration to add to my friends list. If you exchange an email from hotmail or gmail or yahoo, for example, with anyone who has exchanged an email with someone else who exchanged an email with some one who had one of the search words anywhere connected with them, then it might appear in your list of possible "friends", no matter how remote they might be. There is actually someone in this thread who appeared on that possible friends list under their real name, and I recognized it because of the photo :) But, since I keep my facebook & collarme lives as separate as I can, I never acknowledged it. But's it's there. Kinda like STD's.....like you're having sex with everyone your partner ever had sex with, as well as anyone THEY had sex with, and so on..... Therefore, I don't find it surprising at all that Twitter could hook you up with someone who had, say, the word "fetish" connected in their profile that were somehow connected to you. I mean, c'mon....."1goddess4life", and there's no connection with "fetish" anywhere anyhow??? Please. Something flagged you somewhere. edited because I don't know where these extraneous words come from.....

Since she's involved in marketing and PR, and M1 has stated the CM account follows people who are involved with marketing/PR, it's very likely that Twitter recommended her based on the interests listed in her Twitter profile. The CM staff would have no way of knowing she was also a CM user who would feel her privacy was compromised by the follow. Of course, it's pretty silly to get upset because someone follows you. Twitter is social media and often used by companies to build buzz around their products or services. The whole point is to be seen and followed by as many people as possible. Her business reputation will not be affected by who is following her, only the people she's following. The fact that she's here screaming about it just proves she doesn't understand social media, which leads me to believe she either isn't really in marketing or isn't very good at it.

I have blocked some accounts who followed because I was uncomfy with them (maybe I'm overly careful when it comes to work), social media is a part of PR but you'd be amazed how many companies and PR people don't understand social media. I think it's just an overly panicky reaction to something that's essentially harmless.

The way Twitter works is that when you click 'follow' on someone it suggests other people who have similar profile descriptions you may be interested in following. These are the serches we have recently done on twitter: Collarme, BDSM, Tech, San Jose, and Fetish. We had some Kinky marketing professionals come up, and we did follow them (to see who we are following please view our twitter account and click "following" on our page) and we think she was connected to someone who we followed as a result of our search and twitter recommended her. As we don't actually know who she is on twitter, we can't determine with any real accuracy which search result connected us to her.

Just make sure that you don't start following a bunch of therapists, because CBT is also cognitive behavioral therapy...

[:D] Have you considered that things do cross over quite a bit so out of the 25 years in marketing, she could have dealt with tech marketing for 15 years and you can't really market something you know jack shit about. Getting the IP address from an email is easy, any idiot can do that, but having an IP and getting all emails attached to it or originating from it, you need a lot more - I guess your systems admin could do that simply by screening your history, Google can do it, LE can do it if you break enough laws or they believe there is a reason to keep an eye on you, I seriously doubt CM can do it.

When I started looking into how to promote my writing, social media was on the list of things I researched. Soooo many of the articles I read talked about how many marketing people and/or businesses don't understand how to use Twitter and other forms of social media or don't understand how to use them to the best advantage without becoming annoying. IF she's actually in marketing (big if), her lack of comprehension supports my statement that she's probably not very good at what she does. If a layperson like me can grasp the basics of social media marketing, then she should be able to understand it. The fact that she doesn't casts aspersions on her competence, IMO. Never mind her unprofessional conduct in handling the matter.
