I just finished this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Idiot-America-Stupidity-Became-Virtue/dp/0767926153/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311740201&sr=8-1

For anyone who enjoys pop political books, I can't recommend this one enough. It's witty and interesting, and touches on things like basing politics on the gut, cranks becoming mainstream, the fight to teach ID in public schools, Creation museums, global warming, using Jack Bauer as an example of why torture is okay, the Terri Schiavo case, the government not listening to terrorism experts before going to war in Iraq, and so much more, interspersing it with quotes and facts about the founding fathers.

A sample:

"If the country took its obligations to self-government at all seriously, the presence of Sarah Palin on a national ticket would have been an insult on a par with the elevation of Caligula's horse. However, the more people pointed out Palin's obvious shortcomings, the more the people who loved her loved her even more. She was taken seriously not merely because she had been selected to run, but also because of the fervor she had stirred among people in whose view her primary virtue as a candidate was that she made the right people crazy. Their faith in Idiot America and its Three Great Premises was inviolate. Because the precincts of Idiot America were the only places where his party had a viable constituency, John McCain became the first presidential candidate in American history to run as a parody of himself.

You could see it all coming that rainy night in New Hampshire, when all the Republican candidates were alive and viable. They were faith-based and fully cognizant of the fact that they were not running for office so much as they were auditioning for a role, trying for a chance to do their duty on behalf of people who were invested as vicariously in their citizenship as baseball fans are in their teams, or as the viewers of American Idol are in their favorite singer. So that was how it happened that, at one point in the debate, the contenders were asked whether they believed in evolution.

And in response, three of the Republican contenders for President of the United States, in what was supposed to be one of the crucial elections in that country's history, said that, no, they didn't believe in evolution. And the people in the hall cheered.

It was a remarkable moment in that it seemed so unremarkable. There was no doubt that the three of them - Tancredo, Brownback, and Huckabee - were sincere. However, since admitting that you don't believe in evolution is pretty much tantamount to admitting that you plan to eradicate the national debt by spinning straw into gold, it should immediately have disqualified the lot of them. In fact, it should have given people pause about the entire Republican party that a third of its presidential field was willing to admit that their view of the life sciences had stalled in the 1840's. Instead, it was a matter of hitting the right marks, and delivering right on cue the applause lines that the audience expected."

The main problem is that the book is written to include words of more than 2 syllables and therefore it is unintelligible to those who it is intended to help.

Anti-Intellectualism
quote:

Anti-intellectualism is hostility towards and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectual pursuits, usually expressed as the derision of education, philosophy, literature, art, and science, as impractical and contemptible...

In public discourse, anti-intellectuals usually perceive and publicly present themselves as champions of the common folk — populists against political elitism and academic elitism — proposing that the educated are a social class detached from the everyday concerns of the majority, and that they dominate political discourse and higher education.

quote:

We always prefer an ignorant bad man to a educated good one; since, unhappily, smartness and wickedness were supposed to be generally coupled, and like-wise incompetence and goodness.

- The New Purchase, or Seven and a Half Years in the Far West (1843) by Reverend Bayard R. Hall

The classic work on this subject is probably is Columbia University historian Richard Hofstadter's, "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life," published in early 1963.

Another interesting look at the problem:

Anti-intellectualism

quote:

In my opinion, anti-intellectualism is one of the world’s most serious problems, these days.

What is it? It’s the belief that what is good are the “simple people”, the “common people”, who are supposedly more honest and “real” than so-called “ivory tower” intellectuals.

It’s also the belief that thinking and learning are trouble, that they lead people to unhappiness, sinfulness, asking too many questions, and such.

It’s geeks, or more intelligent students, being called “brainy” or “nerds” and harassed by classmates. It’s science being seen as a waste of time and money. It’s a political candidate winning an election because he successfully depicted his opponent as an “egghead”. Incidentally, it’s likely that one of the reasons America currently has one of its worst presidents ever is that, by being less educated and articulate than Gore or Kerry, he appeared “more in touch” with the common man (of course, one should then wonder if you really want the village idiot in charge of the most powerful nation in the world… but I digress.)

There are several sources of anti-intellectualism. Religion is an obvious one, of course, since being intelligent and learning makes one less likely to accept arguments from authority, and to question unproven assertions. An intelligent, learned man has no need for religion – therefore, we don’t want any intelligent, learned men (to paraphrase Ayn Rand).

Another reason is populism, the belief that the honest, hard working “masses” are oppressed by the corrupt, privileged “elites”. While they certainly are, sometimes (in dictatorships, for instance), populism is wrong because of its belief of “the lower, the better”, and its worship of ordinariness. Populism, like most forms of collectivism, punishes people for ability and for success – therefore, it promotes mediocrity and sameness. And a populist certainly hates and feels threatened by anyone with more “brains” or education.

...an intelligent, educated person is much more likely to question, and to see “what’s rotten”. The “unwashed masses” are much easier to keep in line. Higher education is seen as “dangerous” and “subversive”.

Finally, a lot of people simply believe the lie that intelligence and learning are mostly “theoretical” and are of no use in the real world, and can’t be used in order to improve your life.

Does this have anything to do with why people still actually believe the media and political ideology, e.g?

Wow...Fight is a self determined intellectual, I guess.  I'm sorry, Fight, a lot of what you say comes across as stupid to me and totally void of common sense.  I'm sure you feel the same about me but there is something very simple about realizing that life is about self-determination and people have to be responsible for their acts and omissions.

I will say this, the arrogance of liberalism/intellectualism is its own special brand of stupidity and ugly self-righteousness.

It is not at all clear exactly who you are addressing or what issue is being addressed.

But standing on the soap box to decry someone being a self determined intellectual followed immediately by the proclamation that life is about self determination indicates some bit of cognitive dislocation and inner conflict there, to say the least.

How about we just put the intellectual thing aside for the time being and see if we can make our way through simple coherence.

It's a pattern with him.

He's pissed, but he's unclear about what, so he's latched onto talk show solutions.

Here, pissed means drunk.

It seems to fit his posts as well as the other meaning of "angry" XD

People didn't really point out Obama's shortcomings though. They just called him a Muslim and a socialist.

Apparantly you live on a different planet, or were deaf to all the people who pointed out many of Soetoro's/Obama's shortcomings. As if being a Muslim and a Socialist aren't enough shortcomings in an overwhelmingly Christian Democracy.

Well, when it is the hue and cry of Nazis, it sort of doesn't much matter, cuz there is no credence lent to that babbling.

Then you were in an echo chamber.

The major criticism of him were that he did not have the experience, nor the temperament to be the President of the US.

Fair enough criticisms, actually, and I'd say that both are really showing right now.

The one thing I did hate was how people would say McCain would be dead and we'd be stuck with Palin. McCain's still alive and healthy. It was complete bullshit.

By who's estimation are we taking as having expertise here regarding such said experience and temperament?

The same people that consider being a Boraxo salesman and otherwise excellent corporate shill as constituting 'experience' and 'temperament'?

That's what I thought.

pseudo-intellectual:

1. The intellectual is looking for the right questions to ask; the pseudo is giving what he claims to be the right answers.

2. The intellectual is evidently motivated by a disinterested love of truth; the pseudo is interested in being right, or being thought to be right, whether he is or not.

3. The intellectual is willing to admit that what he does not know is far greater than what he knows; the pseudo claims to know as much as can be known about the subject under consideration

4. The intellectual states as good a case for his adversary as can be made out; the pseudo sets up a straw man and beats it to death for the sake of seeming superior.

5. The intellectual is deeply and constantly aware of the limitations of human reason; the pseudo makes a deity of reason and tries to force it into realms it cannot penetrate.

6. The intellectual seeks light from whatever source, realizing that ideas are no respecters of persons and turn up in the most unexpected places from the most improbable people; the pseudo accepts ideas, when he does, only from experts and specialists and certified authorities.

7. The intellectual advances an hypothesis that he hopes may be true; the pseudo propounds a dogma that he insists is true.

8. The intellectual recognizes that opposites are not always contradictory, and may indeed reinforce each other; the pseudo paints a picture in black and white, right or wrong, leaving no room for a contrary viewpoint.

9. The intellectual knows there are no final answers to human questions; the pseudo makes each tentative and provisional answer sound like a finality.

10. The intellectual is courageous in opposing majority opinion, even when it jeopardizes his position; the pseudo slavishly follows "the most reliable authorities" in his field sneering at heresies.

11. The intellectual never talks down to his audience, but tries to be as clear as possible; the pseudo talks above his audience to mystify and impress them.

I think a lot of the so-called "anti-intellectualism" in the US has more to do with having too damn many pseudo-intellectuals pretending to be intellectuals, than it does with some kind of refusal to give credence to new ideas, and well-thought out positions.
