That's pretty funny, even for a play to the lowest common denominator. It's not the thing, but the manner of its use, and what you can learn about the person behind it when the damn thing breaks down. I've never worked with one, but earlier in my life, I did a lot of public speaking. Down at the Reagan Museum, one of the interactive exhibits is a podium set-up, with a teleprompter, running Reagan's first inaugural. Compared to memorization, which is a time-consuming pain in the ass, having the printed text on paper in front of you, which has to be monitored to keep your place, and on the right page, or working extemporaneously from outlines or bullet points, which can lead to easy gaffes with what isn't there, I'd have to say it's a wonderful invention.
