ORIGINAL: kalikshama * Hip and knee replacements only being allowed where patients are in severe pain. Overweight patients will be made to lose weight before being considered for an operation. that is an interesting concept except how does someone overweight lose weight when they cant move/exercise? (scratches head) In addition to expending more calories to lose weight, one can also consume less calories. I think it's reasonable to have the patient lose weight to rule out excess weight as the sole cause of the knee pain (which was true for me previously. I have since hurt my knees on the knee extension machine at the gym >_<. Everyone has recommended swimming as a non-impact form of cardio vascular exercise.) My neighbor, who had private health insurance, was mandated to lost 30# before his surgery. Additionally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knee_replacement#Risks_and_complications A recent literature review showed that there is increased risk in complications for morbidly obese patients after going through total knee replacement, these patients should be advised to lose weight before surgery and, if suitable, would probably benefit from bariatric surgery. yes of course one can eat less but still, that is only part of it and it depends more imo on how efficient your metabolism is, plus as you get older it slows down quite a bit. Swimming is all well and good but i have not gone to a pool since i was a kid, i cant stand the chlorine and i have never found a public/gym with a saline pool. The gym I go to in SoCal is new and they have 3 pools, all or chlorine. [&o] The term used was overweight, not obese, there is a difference. Overweight may not be that much over. I guess the trick is to not let yourself get to that point in the first place... but then if you werent very overweight/obese perhaps you wouldnt need much of the medical care either since you wouldnt have had as much (weight related) stress on your knees, get diabetes, heart problems, etc, etc.. By the same reasoning tho, do they make cancer & heart patients stop smoking before giving treatment? [8|]
