I used to be a devoted "Atlantic" reader, but not so much any more, due to some issues with James Fallow.  However, this article caught my attention:

Good news: American political leadership at work ... far from the beltway
Posted By David Rothkopf Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 6:05 PM

In this moment of national confusion and public despair with officials in Washington, variations on the following cry have often been heard, "Somewhere in the world there must be an American political leader with a vision of tomorrow, a focus on what is really important and an ability to translate rhetoric into success."

I'm pleased to report that there is. If it has escaped your attention it's because that politician has been on the other side of the world the past couple of weeks advancing American interests and the policies of the president with meaningful results and exceptional skill.

That politician is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is just completing an around-the-world mission that has taken her from the economic frontlines of the eurozone crisis to the markets of tomorrow in Asia.

This may well be a puff piece ... I've not be paying detailed attention to Hillary, and what she is actually accomplishing.

However, it does bring up some interesting thoughts.

To me, Hillary was a Hobson's choice presidential candidate last time, and out of the field of McCain, Obama, and her, I would have voted for her (don't have a heart-attack, all you libs and lefties - I'm not as partisan as some of you assume, sometimes).

I think her time in the Obama admin has given her a lot of "real world" versus theoretical political experience, on top of her Senate time, and her time as "co-President".

I still haven't seen a Republican candidate that I particularly like.  I think we need someone who is more reality-based than ideologically based, and especially if we can get a Congress that is her opposite, party-wise, I think she might make a very good choice to run against Obama, and win the next election.

What are your thoughts?  If she ran against Obama in the Democratic primaries, would you support her?

Firm

I'd support her especially against that bunch of clowns the R side has lined up.

She has said she def won't run next year or even in '16. I kinda understand her not running against her boss but I really dont see her already eliminating a run in '16. (assuming there is anything left to run for)

Interesting what is the story behind the article. It is total nonsense, nothing concrete. Soviet leaders got such treatment by the press home in the past. David Rothkopf probably wants something.

More guts? You got any evidence for that?
She's spent pretty much the whole of her political career refusing point blank to commit herself to anything. Any issue where actually taking a stance might alienate somebody, she's avoided like the plague. The Kenyan at least talked the talk as a Senator, even if he has done a worse job of walking the walk since his election than the late Christopher Reeve.
No question that the Kenyan has bottled every election promise he's made so far, but Hilary wasn't even going to stick her neck out far enough to promise anything in the first place. For me, that doesn't really say "gutsy"...

Prima facie situation that she has more guts.  She is heavier than Obama, so ergo id est,  more guts.

I'm with Owner on this one.  I doubt Hillary would even consider running against a sitting democratic president.  But, for what it's worth, I'm with Firm in the way that initially, if it were possible, Hillary would have gotten my vote.

I'm torn. I'm disappointed in Obama's performance, but I don't want her to divide the Dem vote and let smarmy Romney or any of the terrifying Repubs get in the WH.

ETA: I shudder to think of either Palin or Bachmann getting anywhere NEAR the White House. The only Repub. possibilty that wouldn't turn my stomach would be Huntsman.

She couldn't divide the Democratic vote in a general election in favor of a Republican candidate.  She'd have to defeat him in the Democratic primary, and there the Dem votes are already divided.

She certainly gave them some material to work with about birth certificates, didn't she?

Every month until March or April her chances get better and I'm not a big Hillary fan.
With her opposition so bad it's hers to lose.
I'm sure the Repubs would much rather Oblunder run than Hillary! They'd have much more ammunition.
All Hillary would have to say is that she'd defend our borders and *not* sue our states for the dereliction of duty of the Federal govt and the air would rapidly start escaping Oblunder's balloon! You'd have a lot more people requesting a Democrat ballot in the primary!
It's like we have a foreigner or spy in the white house trying his best to destroy the country.
And yes, given the choice of McCain, Oblunder and Hillary I'd have voted for Hillary.
I knew Oblunder was going to be bad but I didn't know he was going to be this bad!
And as for "the markets of the future" in Asia they're not going to do the American workers any good if all our factories keep disapearing are they?

In pop's defense, it's not like he was the admiral in charge.

A good friend was on the Dilligent during a lot of the Hatian/Cuban rafters situation. he said it just made him sick but wtf do you do?

They took the Hatians back to Port au Prince and brought the Cubans on in to miami for processing by INS presumably at the Krome Ave camp..

Yeah, I wasn't even in charge of the ship. We did what Washington told us to do. We didn't make policy we carried it out.
And yeah it made us sick to have to let in Cubans because of a bad policy by our govt. but we did our job and kept our mouths shut.
We didn't make the laws we enforced them.
And yes, a couple of our guys got sick too, those Hatians were some smelly fuckers! We'd throw the blankets that we'd given them overboard or burn them in a big barrel after we released them to the local police in Port O Prince.
They carried a LOT of diseases including Aids so anyone who came close to them was gloved up and wore surgical masks.
I was down in S. Florida in 1980 when Castro let all the rapists, murderers, child molesters etc out of his prisons and that was a real mess!
In the years after that there was a crime wave in S. Fla as they let them out.
Our govt. has a LOT of bad policies that we need to get rid of.
