So I'm driving home from work yesterday, and this ad comes on the radio.  Take a listen;

http://californiansagainstidentitytheft.org/RadioAd.mp3

The main site is here for the sponsors, and the radio ad is there again if the link doesn't work.

http://californiansagainstidentitytheft.org/default.htm

For those who don't click links, this is a married couple talking, as the husband scolds his wife for having signed a petition, and potentially given their name and address away to criminals, and, well, 'she'll certainly never sign anything like that again.'  It's better to hear it.

I hope this fearmongering party foul (at minimum) blows up in the faces of the people behind it. Your thoughts?

Not to sound paranoid, but I never sign petitions or answer surveys unless I've thoroughly checked out what I sign.

To the point of making a campaign about it... well is there actually a precedent for this? Is there actually identify theft going on as a result of people signing petitions? Is it a real threat?

I remember campaigns here to educate people about phishing emails and internet fraud. That wasn't fear mongering, that was real prevention.

On the flip side, there might be a hidden agenda to stop people from petitioning. Hard to say.

According to the tv local news channel, no.

quote:

Other identify theft experts are weighing in, saying there's no report of any petition signature ever leading to identity theft, probably because you only have to give your name and address. Some are concerned the ad will scare voters from signing petitions to put measures on the 2012 ballot.

That sounds like a good common sense approach.  That isn't the one they are pushing in this ad, though.

Dont know how accurate it is...

What a Shocker! Unions Are Behind Scaring Californians From Signing Ballot Petitions

On Friday, attention was drawn to a radio ad and new website that popped up by a group calling itself “Californians Against Identity Theft.” While its backers were not immediately identified (nothing on the website indicates who is behind the site), it didn’t take long to discover that, lo and behold, the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California is behind trying to scare voters away from signing petitions for measures to appear on California’s election ballots.

Following a tip from a RedState reader who had pulled site registration data that gave the telephone number and address of the perpetrators web site registrant, a google search of the phone number revealed the owner to be the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California.

If it works I think it is brilliant. The California experience with ballot initiatives has been disastrous to say the least. Scaring the people away from signing every dumbass petition shoved under their noses in Safeway parking lots might be the only hope the state has.

Rich,

Frankly, there is a concern (and I am unsure how vast, but nevertheless) for women to identify themselves in some way.  The reality is there are a lot of crazy guys out there (and thats not sexist, most rapists are guys, no matter how many times I have set myself up for a rape by a woman it has never gotten done) and in that respect, circumspection is the order of the day, but I don't see this as any less hyperbole and fear mongering than death panels.

Bottom line, I am going to take a wishy-washy attitude with the idea, and a sort of fleeting grimace at the notion of the way it was delivered.

The fear mongering seems like a bunch of bullshit.

If I want to find the names and addresses of a bunch of people, I'll go open a fucking phone book.

OH NO, don't put your name in the phone book cause I can steal your Identity. No, I can't. I'd need more info than just a name and addy.

I'm calling bullshit on the fear mongers no matter which side of the political spectrum they come from.

Maybe people who sign every bullshit petition/initiative in a safeway parking lot without reading it get exactly what they deserve.
