Toppingfrmbottom -> Why does mylanta sometimes agrivate indigestion, gas, bloating an cause nasia? (8/10/2011 1:04:34 AM)

Something it is supposed to help calm? Wehad kfc, it made me sick, yes, I know it was the kfc. I had dry heaving, horrible gas and gas related pressure The need to belch was over whelming, and I seriously needed one of those long powerful rattling belches where you can feel all the gas bloating slash pressure just rattling out of you. and direah. So I wait it out, hours later the gas pressure from gas an the bleches from hell have subsided but heart burn is starting to stir a bit, so I take some Mylanta, now the belching gas pressure is back and I feel nausious.

Yes this is caused after I take Mylanta. As this is happening right after mylanta consumption, I have not eaten again nor taken other medication.

And yes this will be the last time I eat kfc chicken, it's not so good it's worth the misery it will bring later on.

Well that bloody well sucks. It's supposed to stop indigestion, bloating an such crap, not cause it as side affects.

Not being offensive here, but you have skin problems and what you eat effects your skin A LOT, you do know that KFC upsets your digestion and you eat it, then you take meds that makes it worse, wouldn't it be a better idea to not not eat something that is quite bad for you in the first place? I have terrible problems with some kinds of dairy products, so I tend to avoid them, I can skip the ice-cream or have the runs for the rest of the day...

From what you said you encountered, seems like the food was too fat and your gall bladder let you know, apart from the belches, were you feeling bloated, tummy extended, cramps? I'd avoid everything that has to do with cabbage (even broccoli) and drink herbal teas, no carbonated drinks, dry bread for a while and yoghurt, give it a chance to settle down and don't put junk food into your body.

I got that reaction from KFC some twenty years ago.  Seems like nothing has changed.

LaTigresse -> RE: Why does mylanta sometimes agrivate indigestion, gas, bloating an cause nasia? (8/10/2011 4:20:09 AM)

I have to admit that KFC is one of my few fast food splurges. Once every year or two I get a bucket to bring home. Sad I know.

TFB......you really need to eat healthier and quit making excuses for why you don't. You've been given the tools, just do it.

But you already know this...

haha, nope. Kfc always was andlikely always will be greasy crap in a bucket that feeds a lot of people fairly cheaply for fast food. They can grill it now for you, though most still want fried.

no I do not purposly go out and eat it knowing it makes me sick. This is the first time I got sick eating it. I do not make habits of wasting good money on foods that will just make me sick.

As for taking Mylanta, since other heart burn acid indigestion or sour stomach medications don't work, and Mylanta does even though it unfortunatly started the belching back up and made me feel like puking for a while there, it's all we had that would work. It just sucks bigballs and not the sexy ones. I get heart burn and Acid reflux irregardless of what I did or did not eat. I had it for four days in a row once, and had not had junky, or sugary foods. I don't drink soda or other fizzy drinks, litterally the only thing I drink is bottled water, or crystal light , thats a once a couple of days thing, and next to never any more drink ice tea made from Lipton cold brew tea bags. As another treat that doesn't happen often I get minute maid light lemonade, which does not give me any problems, and I know this because I don't get heart burn or indigestion on the days I did drink it. I woke up out of a dead sleep puking what I assume from how awful it tasted, smelled, and burnt my throat was bile or acid.

The pressure was more like someone had inflated a balloon inside me and I could belch just fine, but I needed that one big breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep belch that comes out an you can feel the "balloon" shrink with the long rattling belch.

I am eating healthier, I am still going to love and eat fast food regardless of making healthier choices in between healthy choices. No excuses needed, it's convenient and tasty and I enjoy it.

Then you'll continue to get sick and feel like shit. You made that choice.

If your issue was not just that you ate KFC but that you actually ate too much there is little that can help that.
Mylanta contains an antacid medication and a medication that helps break up gas in some people.
If your tummy is being bothered by the greasy food, or the quantity of the food you ate using an antacid is unlikely to help.

Your stomach needs some acid to digest your food... so sometimes using an antacid won't help if your issue is not an actual acid stomach.

mylanta is also supposed to help with gas and pressure and bloating, as well as heart burn, and sourstomach.

The grease probably caused the runs. But but you suppose it could cause the gassy pressure an belching?

Often how fast you eat something has a lot to do with how belch-y you get.
If it is something that you nibble at or eat at a regular pace you will be less belchy than  after eating something that you really like; usually you eat that stuff quicker and when you eat faster you tend to swallow more air in with your food.
Also when you eat faster you are eating faster than your stomach and brain can communicate your level of fullness and it is easy for you to eat to the feeling "Yuck, too full" stage.
So I think the gassy pressure has more to do with your eating too much food that happened to be KFC, too fast.

This whole thread is one of the many reasons why I stay as far away from fast food as possible.  Just sayin'.

littlewonder -> RE: Why does mylanta sometimes agrivate indigestion, gas, bloating an cause nasia? (8/10/2011 3:23:32 PM)

The only fast foods I can think of that even come close to being good for you is maybe a salad or a piece of grilled chicken or a healthy veggie burrito.

Otherwise fast food is fast for a reason....it's fried and fried foods simply are not good for you. It's full of calories, fat and grease.

There is a "fast food" place by where I work called "Salad Kraze" and they are awesome.  They are kind of like Subway, but for salads.  You still have to watch some of their toppings (bacon, croutons and other carb and fat laden goodies) and some of their dressings, but they are very upfront about the nutritional information in everything (and their house made fat-free ranch is TO DIE FOR!).  I can honestly walk into that place and walk out in about 10 minutes with a custom salad.
That is the only healthy fast food I can think of.
There are almost always healthy options at fast food places, but you have to look for them.  That's why I usually try to plan ahead for my meals and make them at home (it's cheaper too!)

littlewonder -> RE: Why does mylanta sometimes agrivate indigestion, gas, bloating an cause nasia? (8/10/2011 3:48:49 PM)

The problem at fast food places is that unless it's a health food fast food place like Cali Burrito or Liquid Earth, you really have to be stealthy because the toppings and all the extras even in the salads will make a salad or other "healthy" food just as bad as ordering a Big Mac.

I wish more places would put their calories and fat contents on their menus so that people will find it easier and will eat healthier. It would help out this country tremendously i think. Unfortunately very few people really understand nutrition.

Hi TFB
Okay, well, a few things here...
Mylanta is an antacid, as others have said.  There are numerous reasons why your KFC turned on you.

Too much fat/grease from the fryer (overload on the stomach, gall bladder)--antacids won't do too much good there.  When you piss off that gallbladder, you're in for a rough ride, and no antacid is gonna stop that gallbladder from making you hate life for a while.    Also, if you ate too much--an antacid really can't help you out there either.  That's one of those times when you just have to wait things out.

If the chicken was undercooked....or the food prep folks didn't wash their hands properly....or the ice machine wasn't cleaned properly...all can lead to a really lousy 24-hours of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea etc.   Lots and lots of possibilities.  I know, it's enough to make one swear off fast food for life.

Now--more on Mylanta. There are different types out there--I know this first hand because my Dad used to take it daily.  Not all Mylanta has an anti-gas agent, so if you took the one for "sour stomach," it won't help you with gas.  Here's the kicker--Mylanta itself has several ingredients that can interact with other medications that you are taking.  So even though it's an OTC (over the counter) medication, given that you have other health issues, I'd strongly recommend you speak with your local pharmacist or doctor, to make sure that you are taking an antacid that will not cause a drug interaction or reduce the efficacy of your meds .  (certain antibiotics, just for example, should not be taken within hours of ingesting antacids)

I'll also point out that Mylanta cherry flavor, contains sorbitol.  Sorbitol (as any diabetic can testify) has some rather dramatic effects on the bowel.  My ex-wife and I used to call it "shit-it-all".  So while it may help some people, others, like myself, can't touch ANYTHING with sorbitol or it causes gas, cramps and loose stools, etc.

What caused your various symptoms?  There are literally so many potentials suspects here that it's impossible to know for certain.  My suggestion is to avoid the KFC entirely.  If you must indulge, opt for the grilled vs the fried, remove the skin, opt for sides like cole slaw (the lesser of the evils) instead of fries.

Hope you're feeling better soon--

We ate while we watched tv. So more nibbling than devouring, but it is possible to not pay as close attention to the food. I can't eat Panda express with out diareah, gas bloating and an overal oh god I feel like crap feeling. Same as I get from Kfc. So i don't eat their either cause the foods the same kind of low quality greasy fare. Neither will be a huge loss not to eat anymore.
