LC it really boils doing to enjoying life in moderation, doesn't it?  I'm putting forth effort to bring my weight down because I was frighteningly heavy and concerned about that that would do to my health, plus I felt like shit.  So it's a focused effort now, and when I reach my target I'll continue to focus on maintaining that weight, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy food and life - - just in better moderation, with more information about how to sustain that goal.

It's also about knowing your own body.  I know if I eat a lot of pasta, I'll get "puffy" for some reason, so I don't.  Whole grain pasta doesn't quite have that effect, just like brown rice vs. white rice.

I have no desire to be skinny, either.  I'd be perfectly happy in a size 8.

Pretty much, some people can eat stuff that I can't eat because my body won't really tolerate it, while our bodies might be working along the same lines as machines, we got genetics as well, what's great for one person can be hell for the next. I found that once you are living healthy your body will actually let you know, plus you do have a frame, that frame is different from others, for some people a size 2 is healthy and normal, for others it's a 4, some people have an 8 and somebody else might have a 12...

While I think Kate Moss looks amazing, she does have a delicate build and bone structure I'll never have, I would need to be seriously underweight to have no boobs and I'd still have hips, plus I would just look sick trying to be like her without ever achieving it, I'm much rather just me, boobs and all, but healthy. there are different body types and hankering after something you never can achieve is counter productive, make the best of what you have got and **** fashion, most fashion designers are gay men anyway, who'd rather dress up little boys than women.

Like a lot of people bad carbs are my curse lol.  The drop however after i eat them kills me every time.  There is so much you can do with good carbs now that i sorta don't miss the bad carbs every day -- my favorite is roasting veggies of late.

Have you ever really wondered how things most people love and have a hard time giving upp -- bad carbs, sweets, etc are technically bad for you -- for those who love conspirousy theories that is one for the books.

barelynangel -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 3:34:16 PM)

You know another thing that makes people fat is dehydration.  I don't have the stats but i believe 60% of Americans are dehydrated.  Something as simple as water can help with maintaining your body weight.

I know i can go days without drinking actual water though i hydrate with coffee mostly, pop, and crystal light infused water.  They say if you press on your skin and it makes a white mark you may be dehydrated.  I don't know if its true cause my skin always does that!

NuevaVida, i think it has a lot to do with exactly what you said -- knowig your own body.  A lot of yoyoing happens because people see the goal weight as the finish line when really it's the start line.   The weight loss should have been teaching you things.  I like programs that start you at the beginning and then add things slowly so you can see how things effect you, your weight loss, your body water but also how you feel and such.  And when you get to the end of the program, you have learned a lot more than just losing weight.

I am a firm believer of proteins and fats used to lose weight lol but then again i always go against the grain.   But this mentality is coming around slowly.

Congrats on your success, its something i enjoy hearing about.

angel

Thanks, angel.  The thing is, with everyone's body being differently affected by foods, it is very difficult to find a good weight loss plan that is sustainable long term.  To bring this conversation back around a bit, this is why I think being heavy isn't an automatic indication of "lack of self respect," "laziness," and all the other indicators we hear.  When I was at my largest, I begged my doctor for lap band or lipsuction, because my efforts were not showing any positive response.  He said absolutely not.  So you see, my own mind was already wrapped around needing to get things in order and get my body back together, but I didn't have the tools I needed, to do so.  So I kept looking.  Trust me when I say it was a very long process, and I was one of those people who was very big and couldn't understand why I wasn't losing.  I just hadn't gotten the right education yet.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 4:00:59 PM)

I can't speak in regard to the UK, or Europe in general, but here in the US, we have corporations poisoning us with chemicals, sugar, salts and fats.  It's in our canned foods, packaged boxes, just about anything you buy that wasn't put together with your own two hands.    If you can, watch Food Inc.   You will see how the food industry is geared and what their main focus is, and it ain't making quality food.

Stop eating anything that wasn't grown by you, or comes from a can, or box that says add water....you will be amazed at how pounds will fall off.

On a trip through Italy, the one thing that stood out, was the absolutely gorgeous people, men and women.  I had to ask how this is possible when food is everywhere and people seem to be eating no matter where you looked.   Fast food is almost unheard of, fresh veggies and fruits, moderation on the breads and pastas, and they walk...ALOT.

Processed foods are killing us, at the very least they are making for some unhealthy kids.   Trust me, when I say give up all processed foods, start buying fresh and preparing it yourself, the weight will come off..rapidly.   I am a walking, talking advertisement.  Then you can start reading the labels on just what you were eating in the past, and it will make you ill.  This movie, will open your eyes.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 4:15:41 PM)

It's not all that different in Europe, I'm half Italian and the idea of opening cans to make food is almost sacrilegious - I'm currently living in the UK and even here there are farmer's markets, raw products in supermarkets, but you look at the check out in the supermarket, most people buy processed food. I'm a foody and we eat exceptionally well, fresh veg and all that, I spend less than people who buy ready made products and I don't really spend that much time in the kitchen. I don't have a green thumb, I don't plant or harvest, if I throw up a picture it's wilderness for the dogs and cats to play in, but I can at least buy fresh home grown products, and yes, I do walk, A LOT.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 4:25:40 PM)

For my family, it was financial, easier to feed processed then fresh back then....no one worried about chemicals or sugars, or salts.

Now, I am amazed how little our food bill is, have you priced chips, cookies or snack foods lately?  And don't get me started on breakfast cereal...between 3-5.00 for a box, and I buy enough ingredients to make granola cereal for three months, on that amount.   It is cheaper to eat healthy...and think of the money saved on take out food!

With all the places one can find fresh grown produce, dairy, eggs, etc, we should have much healthier kids.

I haven't, hardly eat it, I don't like it, my other half has a tendency to scoff it but that is another reason to not buy it as he tends to battle with his weight, I actually got him lots of oats so he can have porridge in the morning (something I HATE), he has it with honey from the local bee keeper, and it means he feels full until lunch, we hardly eat take outs, we both love continental cheeses and fine wines which is a heavy factor in our food bill, but we only eat free range eggs, free range chicken, meat we know that is organically raised (that's him not me, I hate meat), still pans out cheaper than ready made meals full of fats and preservatives. My snacks are usually fruit that we always have plenty, we were out today and I bought some of the fizzy coke bottles (sour stuff) - ate 3 of them and felt really sick. I think once your body has a healthy balance it will let you know what it needs.

Yeah that's it.  Let's take something very specific and make it personal to all the fat people in the world so people can just bitch and moan about being fat and people do discuss fat people.

angel

Ok, I have read through 4 pages of this and would like to point out the TITLE of this topic is "fat people" That's about as broad and general as you can get. She rants about fat people and then uses a dominant man as an example of the fat people that get her panties in a twist.

And that is my two cents.

barelynangel -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:12:49 PM)

Lisa, ironically, i can find more non-processed foods and such in Chicago than i seem to be able to down here.  Now being the city girl i am lol i can't bring myself to buy meat from a farm - not even eggs.  I know i know but i just can't wrap my head around it.   I get my meat from the grocery store lol.  We do have a 7 day a week farmers market right downtown which i really need to utilize more.  I have a bad habit of buying all kinds of fresh veggies and then letting them go bad when i buy for the week because i change what i eat all week or eat out because i can't get home etc.  Speaking of which i just threw out an eggplant as big as my forarm and zuchhini the same way.  HUGE!

In Chicago, i used to actually get fresh veggies and such on the day i was going to use them because the markets were so close.  Here its not as convenient.   And since i am soooo not a garden woman -- i don't grow my own.

I always wished i knew how to cook.  I woud like to start but i hate clean up so i tend to do easy for me as it's just me and i don't dig left overs.

I do find however, even when i just eat the basics of meat, veggies, eggs with some cheese, the weight falls off.  It's when i start adding all the sauces and/or bad carbs the struggle occurs.     There are also many veggies that can be substituted for favorite carb dishes.  Jimica is one of my favorite new veggies, its crunchy and can be used like apples.  Zuchini can be used for hashbrowns etc.   If i could cook better than what i do, i'd gourmet it up with the substitutions.

Mellisande, catch up -- we're kinda past that. There is an interesting discussion going on now about fresh v processed.

I think it might be all the salt and preservatives in them.

Could be. All I know is that the weight just melted off. I've never had such an easy time losing weight before. Oh I don't add salt to food, it tastes so much better too. I can't stand salty foods any more.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:36:38 PM)

Quite a few people notice that when they come off processed foods, the salt and the additives in them make you gain water, fat cells consist mainly of water. I do like salty things (one of the tattoos on the small of my back was unfortunately misspelled and reads spicy/salty instead of lucky - gave me and the Chinese acupuncturist quite a chuckle) but I don't like the weird taste of the artificial saltiness in processed food, while I love the natural salty taste of sea vegetables and fish, it's a very delicate taste compared to an overpowering taste of harshness you get from ready made stuff.

barelynangel -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:52:44 PM)

Processed food does suck, unfortunately it's soooo convenient for most.   Many of the people i work with find the same thing when we have two phrases -- back to the basics and KISS -- keep it simple, silly/stupid/sweety/slut lol  -- whichever your preference.  I get on my rolls where i won't even venture into the inner part of the grocery store but fill my cart with veggies, meats, and eggs, and yes lol cheese.

I have learned so many ways to make interesting dishes but some of my favorite are the very simple ones -- chicken muffins, roasted veggies, omlets and such.   My biggest vice however is cooking a damn chicken breast.  It ends up cut to cubes because i am always afraid its not done lol.  One day though, one day.

gungadin09 -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:55:00 PM)

Did you just say chicken *muffins*? Please tell me you're kidding!

pam

barelynangel -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:58:04 PM)

lol nope, its a low carb thingy.    I am a low carb baby, i have tons of recipes like this --  one 3 inch notebook that has over 2 thousand recipes -- too bad i can't cook [:(]

http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/tasty_chicken_muffins.html

I usually add other veggies in there and experiment with different types of cheese.  I know many people who actually shred chickn breasts instead of using shredded chicken from the can.

You could also probably do this with tuna. But i don't like fish.  It's a great grab and go.   grins i get the same question when i speak with the people i work with in losing weight and such.   But once they taste it and the ease of it, they get on board lol

gungadin09 -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 5:59:39 PM)

Looks more like a mini quiche than a true muffin, but okay.
