lol everyone has to be a critic.  I just call it what they call it.

gungadin09 -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 6:05:57 PM)

i don't really care what anyone calls it. It's just that "chicken muffin" doesn't sound that appetizing, IMO.

Mellisande, catch up -- we're kinda past that. There is an interesting discussion going on now about fresh v processed.

Getting there. When I posted that there were only 6 pages showing on my screen because I can't read every single post that quickly and had to take a break.

Processed food does suck, unfortunately it's soooo convenient for most.   Many of the people i work with find the same thing when we have two phrases -- back to the basics and KISS -- keep it simple, silly/stupid/sweety/slut lol  -- whichever your preference.  I get on my rolls where i won't even venture into the inner part of the grocery store but fill my cart with veggies, meats, and eggs, and yes lol cheese.

I have learned so many ways to make interesting dishes but some of my favorite are the very simple ones -- chicken muffins, roasted veggies, omlets and such.   My biggest vice however is cooking a damn chicken breast.  It ends up cut to cubes because i am always afraid its not done lol.  One day though, one day.

angel

well, yes processed food is convenient, but for those that want to change that and have a small freezer, you can cook up a huge batch of food, like chili or tomato sauce or lasagna or various other food, let the food cool, then divide it up into small meal sized batches and freeze them individually. Then take the meal out of the freezer and into the fridge when you get up so it will be thawed by dinnertime.

With a little planning, finding freezable recipes and a little organization you can spend less time in the kitchen cooking and when you need convenience, its right there, and made from all good wholesome ingredients. Add a bag of prewashed salad and there's din din. [:)]

lol nope, its a low carb thingy.    I am a low carb baby, i have tons of recipes like this --  one 3 inch notebook that has over 2 thousand recipes -- too bad i can't cook [:(]

http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/tasty_chicken_muffins.html

I usually add other veggies in there and experiment with different types of cheese.  I know many people who actually shred chickn breasts instead of using shredded chicken from the can.

You could also probably do this with tuna. But i don't like fish.  It's a great grab and go.   grins i get the same question when i speak with the people i work with in losing weight and such.   But once they taste it and the ease of it, they get on board lol

angel

I can't say that the chicken muffins sound all that appetizing to me, but since I LOVE to cook especially with fresh ingredients this has spurred on a google search for new recipes.

barelynangel -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 7:29:59 PM)

TJ, shhhhh lol you are being too logical about what it takes -- failing to plan is planning to fail.

somedays i do like my excuses lol.

impishhellcat,

the name never bothered me what intrigued me because of the name was that it infers easy making and portable when eating as is a muffin.

OMG i love recipes -- which no one can understand as i can't cook lol.  I used to have 300 cookbooks until my ex threw them away instead of calling me to tell me i forgotten when i moved out.

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Fat People (8/14/2011 7:35:34 PM)

It's not the name that bothers me it's the idea of a muffin that I find unappetizing. I love love love bread and yeasty things, but I just can't do a muffin. Odd.

Right now my husbands parent's over planted their garden so we are ripe with fresh cherry tomatoes and all kinds of peppers so I'm being creative. I made quesadillas for dinner tonight with fresh peppers, chicken, and tomatoes.

And for those who don't think your overweightness or obesity doesn't effect others -- if you work for a company that pays your health insurance as a group it does.   They base premiums on all the issues and potential issues your company may have, and they ask your weight because they determine where people fall in the scale of obesity and they utilize that as a potential for health risks.   I know because i asked our health insurance company when we had to fill out these questionnaires so they can quote our company on health insurance.

The problem with this line of thinking is that unless you plan on singling out only overweight people that means no one should do anything that could be bad for their health, if you smoke you are a terrible person, if you drink you are a terrible person, if you play a sport with a high rate of injury, like for example football then you are a terrible person, if you are under 25 and drives, as statistic give rather alarming statistics for how many accidents that group have, then you are a terrible person, the list would go on and on. Do you really want a society where everyone that do anything that might increase their risk of needing medical attention is treated like shit and is frozen out of society for I sure as hell don't.

I wish you well

When I was still driving truck, I looked at one company to see if I might want to apply with them. They had a BMI limit. Obviously, a person's BMI doesn't show whether one is unhealthy or not, and in order to go to work for any trucking outfit, one needs to get a fresh new medical card, which means a medical exam. So I believe it was that company's insurance company who said if they had drivers with lower BMI's their insurance rates would be lower.

This is a huge problem and happens more often than most people know, outright discrimination of overweight people, and quite often the type of discrimination which would have caused a outrage if it had been done towards any other group, but since there are so much ignorance about overweight, and to many people think like the OP and Angel and others discrimination and bulling towards fat people is seen as okey, people see fat folks as having themselves to blame, and far to many are so afraid of what would happen if anyone would think being fat i ok that the discrimination continues. However discrimination against fat pepole is not better than discrimination based on race, sex or religion. I only hope there eventually will be more common knowledge around overweight, perhaps then we will no longer be treated like second class citizens.

I wish you well

So are you going to continue  throwing a tantrum and perhaps EXPLAIN how you believe the machines in that link are the machines used on TBL?    They don't even use the same technique, the scans on TBL tell a lot more than a guesstimate of body fat percentage.  That is what i would like to have done -- not a body fat scale.

The one throwing a tantrum here is you Angel, and over what a disagreement on what scales are used for a TV show? I have no knowledge of scales so I have no idea witch one of you is right, however Lady Constance posts about what she think is right in a intelligent manner while you behave like a spoiled child that is denied ice cream, and when Lady Constance then do not answer your tantrum for a few posts you have to make another post about it because little Angel is not getting enough attention? Seriously you need to grow up, it is a discussion about what scales a TV show used, is that really important enough to have a tantrum over, are you really so immature that you can not stand anyone disagreeing with you on even the smallest issues?

I wish you well

I had beefsteak tomatoes, roma tomatoes, Peppers, squash and watermelon all planted in a little garden and the drought and heat wave killed them ALL :( I only got a few small Jalepenos before they all withered... I LOVE eating fresh produce and I eat healthy 80 percent of the time.

Sorry if this is off topic, But it's a point I feel I should make. I weigh 355 lbs and have been trying like hell to lose it. Gym 3 days a week, Eating less than 1800 calories per day (as prescribed by my dietician, I was doing 1200 per day) watching my fats and carbs and in a year I have only lost 25 lbs. All while having to cook for the unhealthiest and pickiest eater I've ever known(aka My Hubby) I forget to eat and I forget to take my medicine and I have days where I hurt too much to get out of bed much.
According to most of the posters every one of the Healthier overweight women who have posted are the exception not the rule. But according to my Dietician and my primary care doctor they both see people like us every day. Overweight but still able to keep up physically with smaller people. I take meds for PCOS, I have perfect blood pressure, I am not diabetic or even borderline, I have back troubles from an injury. But people look at me with disgust when I go out to eat, when they pass me on the street. When I have back pains everyone automatically assumes that it is because of my weight. I can walk a 16 minute mile and barely break a sweat without getting out of breath.

People with attitudes like the OP make people like me feel like shit even though we work hard for every ounce of weight loss. I'm sorry if my rolls offend you, They offend me too. What really gets to me is the Smoker sitting there downing drink after drink and looking at me as if I am staining the earth with my mere presence while I am helping my Aunt As a Bar back.

Said it before and I'll say it again: When you assume you make an ass out of you and me.

Just my two cents. And that chicken muffin thing sounds pretty tasty.

Listen.........I GET that you are fat and butthurt about the subject matter. You've made it perfectly clear.

There are several things that would cause me not to hire a person. The topic of this thread is fat and so I stayed on topic. Having been fat, being aware of the physical limitations of being fat, I cannot imagine being a lot more fat and trying to do the tasks most of our positions require. To ME, it is a self imposed handicap. One that can be removed. I never said it was an easy task but it is not impossible. I know this first hand.

If you are fat and if you do not mind being fat, then you accept the limitations of being fat. It is no different than, if you weigh over 200# you will not be allowed to ride one of my horses. Rather like, if a couple weighs over 300# together, I will not put you in the guest bedroom that has a cheap futon for a bed. I only put lightweight people in there. Both to keep the bed from being broken AND to save them the embarrassment of telling me their fat asses broke my bed.

As a former fat woman, now just 'built'.....due to lots of gym work and careful diet monitoring...as the mother of a morbidly obese woman..... I get the emotional reaction to the topic. If I had noticed anyone in this thread being cruel, making fun of, or spouting off stupid bullshit just to be hurtful, then I would understand the sensitivity. But aside from the OP, it's been a relatively mild discussion as fat threads go.

As for being a woman and the job market. I am a realist. If I was looking for a job, I would make damned sure the job I was applying for I could do. If the job required a great deal of lifting and upper body strength to do physical labour, I would not apply.

If I was applying for a job that was traditionally held by a man, I would be prepared to prove my abilities and KNOW for a fact that I could do those tasks on a daily basis without destroying the integrity of the job or jepardizing my health.

Now, if we were discussing dangerous hobbies rather than fat...based upon what I know about...ohhhhhh sayyyyyyy, motocross. If I was told initially that the applicant was heavily into motocross competition, they would likely not be considered for employment either. I need employees that will consistently be able to show up and do the work. Not drag their broken beat up bodies in after a few days in the hospital, barely able to get to work unassisted, let alone do the work.

To be honest, I personally find going to the gym 3 times a week doesnt do much for me, especially if its for only half an hour. Before i got sick twice in a row a few months ago, i was going to the gym two times a day, exercising on the elliptical or bike and its full tilt for 45 minutes each time, for a total of 1-1/2 hours per day, 6 or 7 days/week. I was totally soaked from sweat (I dont just glow lol) each time. I also worked out on free weights to build muscle, did crunches, planks, etc. So my view is, at least for me, that i have to do that kind of exercise to get into and stay in decent shape. The reason i went twice a day was that i have a problem with my foot so anything longer than 45 minutes causes me too much pain and is counterproductive, so rather than do 1 workout for 1-1/2 hours, i did 2 at 45 minutes. Right now i am trying to get back to that routine again..

So if you feel you arent getting results from your workouts, maybe you need to go 4 or 5 times a week?.. and maybe mix up your workouts more if your body has adapted to your workout routine... I know i need to mix mine up more as well...

LaTigresse -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 7:21:30 AM)

Same for me. I have to do a lot of switching it around. If I were to even go 4-5 nights a week and spend 1/2 hour on the elliptical, it really wouldn't do much for me. I have found that tossing in 10 -15 minutes of free weights before, changing my cardio around, doing some intense yoga/pilates, that is when I start really seeing a change. If I am not sweating my ass off during and pleasantly sore the morning after, I am not doing it right. I have to keep my body guessing and really working at it.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 7:31:37 AM)

I have to agree with you, LaT, about this thread not being mean like so many fat threads turn out to be. I'm enjoying posting & reading here.

I do have one thing to point out on the "not overweight is healthier" front. I have a disease that when it flares, I lose weight. Most people who have this disease are thin & look quite healthy. And right now it's flaring & I'm losing weight. I appreciate the weight loss, but I'm miserably unhealthy from the disease. This is not a disease that is caused by being overweight; it's an auto-immune disorder.

Since they have finally figured out what was causing my pain, though, I'm able to move easier & a lot more & that's making me also lose weight again & get into better shape. The things that I miss the most about being thin are stamina, agility & being able to fit into smaller spaces.
