No, I agree with Tazzy.

The BMI is nonsense.

And you said it yourself, it doesn't take muscle mass into account.

I don't have the link but I read where 90% of NFL players would be judged obese by BMI standards.

They seem to manage to be pretty athletic despite their obesity.

Yeah, and 90% of the obese people can run replace a wide receiver and replicate his performance in an NFL game and not collapse on a field.

The fact that some are using NFL players or athletes in general to demonstrate that BMI is wrong simply illustrates that the majority of the population is unhealthily fat and refuses to accept the reality.

LaTigresse -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 7:53:16 AM)

Oh trust me......I know for a fact skinny does not mean healthy. Two people, I have known and loved, are testament to that.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 7:56:15 AM)

Dang, are we still yapping about fat folks?

Anyone remember that Randy Newman song, "Short People"? It has been my earworm for this thread!

LaTigresse -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 8:45:15 AM)

I always find these thread quite interesting actually. The deep emotions that this one topic creates is, to me, indicative of how much of a problem it really is.

I think that, because of the stigma attached, and the emotional and mental strain it causes, the major struggle it is for people to change....overweight people have a really strong, almost attachment, to pushing their size to the other side of the spectrum of making it acceptable. Wanting to be seen as more than a fat person. Something I totally get and support 100%.

Unfortunately none of that negates the health risks associated with be fat and out of shape. No more or less so that drinking to excess or smoking. However, many thin people that have been polled, would rather risk lung cancer by smoking, than be fat. This tells of the stigma our society has about being fat.............all while most of us ARE fat and out of shape. This speaks of an awful lot of self loathing.....which then leads back to fighting to make it acceptable and to be seen as more than......a disgusting fat person. Something they themselves are seeing, in some way, based upon our societal conditioning, when they look at themselves. It is a vicious circle of self loathing, a fight for acceptance both of self and with others, yet that undeniable awareness that it is unhealthy and that they will, at some point, pay a price.

If indeed food is an addiction in some way or another, it must be the most difficult to overcome..... I was able to stop smoking entirely without dying. My father COULD, stop drinking completely and only improve his life. But we cannot stop eating and survive.

I actually believe that these sorts of discussions are excellent.........if they are kept in the right tone. I believe that desensitizing the triggers like 'fat' and 'obese' with good discussion can only improve our societal mindsets and, maybe just maybe, make it acceptable to say things like "I AM fat and out of shape and I DO need help because fighting this is fucking HARD!" instead of attaching such stigmas. Stigmas like fat = lazy, dirty, slob, etc etc etc....

Being fat and out of shape IS a health epidemic in this country and becoming one world wide. If we don't find a way to deal with it, in a constructive manner, our health care costs WILL continue to rise along with many other things we don't even take into consideration, like fuel and energy consumption.

I believe certain things in food is an addiction.. imo, you can get addicted to the taste of fatty food, sweet food, salty food..

I do have a sweet tooth and find breaking myself of that craving to be very difficult. I must go thru withdrawal (no processed food at all) for several weeks before i can come thru the other side. Once i do tho and then taste something i used to eat before, be it salty, full of fat, or sugar/sweet.. that is when my tastebuds go nuts. Everything (made by someone else/processed) tastes way too salty, way too sweet, way too fatty. Then i ask myself how the f**k i could have possibly eaten that before!

Imo, it is an addiction, and it takes a lot of willpower to make it thru and not fall back into bad habits again. Especially when you are in the checkout waiting and there is your fav minty York bar sitting there winkin at ya and its only 50 cents on sale! [>:]

NuevaVida -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 9:32:17 AM)

Food can absolutely be an addiction. It's something I struggle with every day. I used to have these almost blind binges, where I'd let the craving just take over, in kind of a drunken-like state. Next thing I knew, there were wrappers all around and my stomach felt like shit, but I'd feel this awesome relief, like right after an orgasm. And then of course I'd beat myself up to no end. Such a fun little cycle.

It's been years since I've caved in to that (with one exception) but only because I am constantly aware of food and my headspace about food. It is not an easy feat but the rewards outweigh the rush I used to feel.

The exception was kind of funny in a way. I was strongly craving sweet and had a bowl of tangerines at my desk. So I ate one but it didn't help. Next thing I knew my trash was filled with peelings and I had to ask myself if 8 tangerines constitutes a binge. Friends laughed and said no but I realize I had that rush again so regardless of whether or not the food is healthy, binge behavior is still binge behavior. So it made me even more aware.

As for the gym, I just started really slow. I hate excercise and I'm not a morning person but I can't go at night. So I forced myself up at 5AM and went. The first month were pretty wimpy workouts but I told myself I am moving, which is better than lying in bed, so just keep going.

I go 3 times a week for about 90 minutes and lately have been pushing myself more and more. I can really notice the difference now, so even the little bit that I do is worth it. Baby steps...

Impishellcat,

I could see that being an irritant for people not because of issues they have but because they don't like the fact that they would have to pay more than others.  People don't think its fair that they would have to pay more than others due to their medical issues.    What's ironic is while i don't agree that fat people are healthy as fat is weighing down their joints and body etc.   I don't think someone should have to pay for being a risk, when the actuality isn't happening.  I.e., being made to pay more in health insurance because you are fat but aren't costing the insurance company any money in medical expenses for issues caused by being obese.

It would be interesting to see if we were given that option.  I think there would be a major uproar and the partners drawing the line with any company that mandated that.

angel

Hey angel is it really legal to do that? Surely it's discrimination is it not?

It is 100% legal to discriminate against ANYONE other than the members of protected classes.

NuevaVida -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 10:45:59 AM)

Thank you Lady Hib [:)]

I'm an expert at failed diets and feeling shitty as a result. I'm glad to have finally figured out what will work for myself. But I had to be in the right mental place to succeed.

NuevaVida -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 10:53:14 AM)

Regarding health insurance, when I was applying for personal health insurance (between jobs) I was turned down left and right due to my weight and depression in my history. I was told I'd be reconsidered if I got my weight down to a certain level.

Group insurance is different. I don't believe they can discriminate like that but don't know for sure.

I can't speak in regard to the UK, or Europe in general, but here in the US, we have corporations poisoning us with chemicals, sugar, salts and fats.  It's in our canned foods, packaged boxes, just about anything you buy that wasn't put together with your own two hands.    If you can, watch Food Inc.   You will see how the food industry is geared and what their main focus is, and it ain't making quality food.
*yawn*

Why are they buying pre-packaged  food again? Oh right, that's because they are lazy. Absolutely no one that whines about it is the person that buys meat, poultry, vegetables and beans and makes their own meals every single day. Absolutely no one.  It is also a lie that junk food costs less than good food because junk food requires additives that also cost money.

I'm yet to see a fat European living in any major metropolitan city in the US that became fat after moving here. That's because when we move to the US we continue to eat the same way we always ate, which includes picking up the staples from the stores and making dinners. Every single day. Regardless of how tired we are. But I know, it is so much easier to blame it all on genetics. Here's a hint - if it in fact were genetic then by now humans would have stopped existing as the species.

Eating healthy does not require cooking.

For breakfast some fresh fruit and good yogurt. For lunch a salad of fresh tomatoes, fresh moz cheese drizzled with a balsamic vinegarette with a piece of multigrain bread. Easy, fast and healthy.

That's how I eat on work days, only I use Baby Bell fat free cheese. I eat a LOT of fruit throughoutht the day, and veggie sandwiches on whole wheat or sandwich thins. Sometimes I do eat Lean Cuisines, though, if there is simply not enough time to prepare something. I also eat hard boiled eggs for a snack.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:31:11 AM)

I envy you folks that can eat raw vegetables! If they're not completely COOKED, I suffer. The exception is those nice soft weedy lettuces. ONE piece of raw carrot is all my stomach can handle.

And now I crave spinach salad THANKS GAIZ!!

NuevaVida -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:35:48 AM)

I feel fortunate that I'm not negatively affected by raw veggies. I ear raw red bell pepper a lot as a snack and most of my friends say they couldn't handle that at all.

I love love love fresh spinach. I just tried red chard though and, well, not so much.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:35:56 AM)

Oh, and eating out wise, Panera has this great sammige called "mediterranean veggie" that is super tasty.

Maybe I'll get one this week...

LaTigresse -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:36:13 AM)

You are welcome!

I am going to try making kale chips one of these days very soon. It is easy and they are supposed to taste good. I've just never tried them.

NuevaVida -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:36:59 AM)

Panera has a really good black bean soup, too!

LaTigresse -> RE: Fat People (8/15/2011 11:47:18 AM)

I love black bean soup and there is also thing thing I just kinda made up that I make a batch of then freeze most of it in individual containers.

Has a brown rice, and other grains pilaf thing Kashi brand or one I create with various stuff I already have. A can of black beans with hot peppers already added, a can of chopped tomatoes with hot peppers in them. Chop up some onion, red and green pepper, dig out a bag of frozen corn (I always freeze some of the summer sweet corn for winter use) and drain then brown with the onion and peppers in a non stick pan. Toss it all together! Easy as hell and very tasty. Almost no fat but loads of flavour. And you won't be hungry any time soon. I have also added some chopped chicken breasts but it's not necessary as the black beans have enough protein.
