You seem to forget it wasn't just a black rapper who spoke out against Bush.  But that's not the point.  Everyone, including entertainers, are entitled to their opinions.... until those opinions cross over into hate speech.

So what defines hate speech? Is it posting pictures of someone highlighting their supposed resemblance to the ape family? I'm just curious.

And hate speech is still an entitlement. Hate crime is one of the craziest notions I've ever seen as a good many people who are assaulted or killed were hated beforehand for some reason. It's like lining up mothers and saying, your child is worth more than hers.

If you want to increase the punishment across the board, I'll jump in your camp, but not when you essentially create protected classes.

"Hate crime is one of the craziest notions I've ever seen as a good many people who are assaulted or killed were hated beforehand for some reason.

Wow,another "free speecher" defending a criminal`s rights.Who knew violent criminals had so many champions among conservatives?

How again do hate speech laws negatively affect law abiding citizens?

Now there's a dipshit question. There's a saying that goes around, something about there never being a dumb question, only unasked questions. That's apparently not true as being willing to punish criminals even more, isn't enough for you.

Let me say this slow Owner. If you want to increase punishments across the board, I'm right there with you. If you want to codify differences in race and sex in law, I'm not. It's that simple. Especially one that essentially targets thought and speech. It is absurd that I can, for example, hate Polynesians, but as long as I keep my mouth shut, I can kill a couple and walk away with less years than if I didn't keep my mouth shut.

I'd just as soon add the time you want added for that to everyone doing the deed.

Simple enough isn't it?

Owner59 -> RE: Obama's Failed Administration (8/15/2011 8:26:05 AM)

To much for ya?

ok.

Those criminals are sleeping better knowing your fighting for their freedom of speech......[8|]

I`ll ask again a different way,how do hate crime laws affect your free speech rights?

It`s a simple question. No need to project on others your inability to answer.

No, it's the same question neo-cons asked when asking how allowing unlimited and unapproved wiretaps affected the privacy of law abiding citizens.

My answer is the same. I don't bomb buildings or people, so it doesn't affect me in the things I do day to day. I don't engage in hate speech nor kill people without justifiable cause, so it doesn't affect me in the things I do day to day.

That doesn't make it right however, nor does it maintain the right in itself. It's kind of like abortion. You don't have them, but you stand for the right don't you?

Owner59 -> RE: Obama's Failed Administration (8/15/2011 8:40:56 AM)

So they(hate crime laws) do make sense to you.

You just don`t like them.

That was easy.

If you want easy, just sit down and be quiet when can't debate a topic owner. What you want is what many liberals want, and that is a graduated system of rights instead of rights that apply equally and across the board. Which is why listening to most of you scream about rights is about as useful and meaningful as listening to the wind blow.

You know the crazy thing. I go to the post office once a week. Two clerks work the front. There used to be more but with the cuts, we're down to two. One is an older man, near retirement. He likes to talk about what's happening to the post office and the economy in general. There's a younger lady, maybe 40. She and I talk about different things - computers, food, where I went the week before since I'm in sending off expenses.

The line was long this morning. I had a guy in front of me who pulled change out of his pocket, held it up in front of him for a long time as if he either couldn't add or couldn't see well enough to figure out the denominations. There was a woman behind me in flip-flops, who looked as if she'd just gotten out of bed and who expressed her exasperation with the line by sighing constantly and tapping her toes. Another guy in front of me clutched at his letters so hard he was about to wad them up before he could ever get a stamp.

The woman was working this morning. She'd already looked over the line and gave me a big smile. We talk, chat and laugh for our 60 seconds of interaction.

But the line was long and minds wander. Mine did, back to the other guy. I wondered where he was this morning since he's usually at the other station beside her. From him it went to the last thing we talked about which was his perspective on what needed to happen to the post office and the general lack of politicians to do much of anything effectively. The political though brought me back to something I'd wrote once about being an idiot if you thought either party gave a shit about you.

That led me to this thread since the debate always gets down to which side is bad. That led me to taz's comment about sometimes it's always about race.

That led to a rather stunning thought.

The woman at the register was black. Hadn't even crossed my mind, nor had the fact that the guy in front of me clutching his letters was too.

What I saw when I walked in were people. What I saw after thinking about liberal thoughts posted here, was black and white.

So I get to the front. The woman says, where'd you go last week? I told her. Then I said, you know, some people are just crazy. She said, yep they are.

And they are.

The problem is and too many seem to miss, that the punishment can increase (more time) depending on some legal assessment of the victim...simple as that. No other rights need be involved.

I can surely see that.

Especially people who spend a half page on what could be said in two short sentences.

No, because that's a specific diss aimed at an individual, rather than a general one aimed at a racial or cultural group.
Any more stupid questions with self evident answers you need clearing up, or are you done straw manning now?

Are you not able to comprehend that certain groups of people have been historically discriminated against?

Sorry, I keep forgetting I'm talking to people who can only speak in short sentences and who rip their hair out when trying to deal with more subtleties than their talking points allow.

So I'll make it short for you rml. No, it doesn't make sense. There that was easy.

Not sure waht any of that has to do with hate crimes and the criminals who`s right`s you seem so concerned about.

And you still haven`t aswered my post but rather mocked the question, then squawked that I`m not willing to debate?

Is that how it works?

Answer please or STFU.

Just curious ace, which president you're referring to since both were done the same way.

what does that have to do with making sure the law treats everyone equally? Or are you saying that punishment for the past should be codified in law now?

Of course I understand people have been discriminated against. If you want to talk in general terms, find me a group that hasn't at some point in history.

Get your facts straight.  Thats not what I said.  I said for some people, it is about race.  Its been evident for years.  It shows in the number of racists blogs.  The number of tweets.  The "boy" comments.  Even the promising college football player who got canned because he posted to his facebook account about grabbing guns because there is a n***** in the WH.

So you can tell all the pretty stories about how you dont see color.  for SOME people, thats all they see.

Sort of like posting pictures of someone dressed like a witch doctor, or in a watermelon patch.
