The problem is the Republican Party's devotion to what they consider morality.

Then they can continually, hypocritically, violate their own supposed principles.

Otherwise I wouldn't care.

Gee....it seems quite a few GOP supporters where very upset when it was a DEM caught in a scandal, and demanded he resign, but when it is one of their own, they are strangely silent

Well, fuck.

Something happened over the weekend, and all the facts aren't apparent (the majority of the story is from the information gotten from the sister of the young man who placed the ad, went to the hotel, and then chickened out).

We have no clue as to the politics of Hinkle's stance on gays ... but you are jumping out here, wanting us to condemn him ... for what, for shit sakes?

Perhaps the reason that you don't have anyone on the right condemning him, is because we try not to be a raving mob and condemn someone as "guilty" when we don't have the facts, and don't know if he did anything morally or legally wrong.

Perhaps you should consider doing the same thing.

Firm

This has to be the funniest thing you have ever said.

Read my lips.............Bill Clinton.

Im curious as to what he meant by a "shakedown".

Assuming that the story is true, his assumption was that the whole thing was done to get money from him.  He even tried to buy them off for $10K.  He clearly thought he was being blackmailed - he hadn't quite grasped what's going on.

To be honest, I don't understand what the brother-sister team IS after.

Moonhead -> RE: Oh NOOO!! Another Gay GOP sex scandel brewing (8/16/2011 6:44:24 AM)

An admission that he shouldn't have voted against a gay rights bill if he's going to go around paying members of the same sex to play a game of hide the sausage?

farglebargle -> RE: Oh NOOO!! Another Gay GOP sex scandel brewing (8/16/2011 7:04:33 AM)

Aren't CLOSETED politicians a national security risk, since they *can* be blackmailed to keep their "secret"?

EternalHoH -> RE: Oh NOOO!! Another Gay GOP sex scandel brewing (8/16/2011 7:19:57 AM)

She soon got another call -- from the Marriott hotel. It was Hinkle. Megan Gibson told Hinkle that she had informed his wife and family that he was gay.Megan Gibson said Hinkle's response was: "You just ruined me."

"You just ruined me"?   What about "I just ruined myself".
I thought moral majority republicans were stalwarts in that whole 'personal responsibility' thing....

I think I can come up with several threads in which I have said "don't jump to conclusions", or where I have not been way out in front of the facts with a condemnation of someone.

And if you've read my other comments in this thread (especially my comments to tazzy), you'll see what I believe if indeed he is "guilty" of hypocrisy.

So not only are you assumptions false, your reasoning sucks and your conclusion is faulty.

But nice try.

There's been a few civil servants over here who've lost their jobs over that, but that was back when it was still possible to keep things like that secret. I suspect they might be less of a security risk these days...

I did not defend Weiner.  He was wrong, and I stated so up front.

The same with Hinkle.  Offering money for sex, then offering to pay them 10000 dollars to keep quiet.... yeah... he should go too.

*shrugs*

I don't necessarily disagree, tazzy,

But all we have so far is a single story, in which the majority of the information came from one party.

I'm sure the media will give us more details as it becomes available.  Plenty of time to tar and feather him later.

Yea, from the sister. Who apparently didn't have a problem with the kid placing the ad in the first place, but now feels the need to come forward because he acted "creepy"  Who did she think was going to answer an ad like that?

Ah, yes, she forced the politician to answer the ad by placing it.  How devious of her.  The politician read the ad, and was mystically compelled to answer, offer money, and a huge tip.

A shakedown refers to extortion.  There was no extortion when he answered the ad, or when he showed up at the hotel.  As I stated before, I have yet to hear of any charges stemming from the incident.  But even you have to agree that two wrongs do not make a right.

Hinkle is guilty ... by his own admission... and should resign.

The threat isn't being homosexual. The threat is being closeted, and therefore vulnerable to blackmail.

You miss my point: how many of your politicians have managed to stay in the closet rather than exposing themselves to the voters?

You just love to spin the shit out of my posts don't ya sweet cheeks. Why don't you try responding to what I say for a change instead of trying to be such a bitch all the time. I never claimed that Hinkle wasn't guilty, I said I thought it was odd that the sister waited until her brother actually picked some idiot up before she had a problem with the whole thing.

edited to add, yes I know I am also being a bitch. I think I will blame it on this loverly virus I have acquired and go back to bed.

tazzygirl -> RE: Oh NOOO!! Another Gay GOP sex scandel brewing (8/16/2011 4:13:14 PM)

Yeah, all of 47 minutes from the time the ad was placed until Hinkle answered.  And it has been said there is no proof that the sister knew before hand what was happening. Might have been her gut reaction when her brother told her.

What is in evidence is that the emails are not in dispute.  The gay community is also seeming to question the brother's actions as well.  But, without proof, leave the sister out of it.  There isnt much I wouldnt have done for my brothers... except lie.

The only place that gay rights are opposed is on the Right. And large sections of the Right are rabid about denying gays their rights. So enough of the double-speak thanks.

First, in the US, we are suppose to have that "innocent until proven guilty" thingee.

Second, no charges have been placed against him.

Third, he has not denied the basic facts, just their interpretation.

Fourth, no one has provided any evidence of Hinkle's own political, personal or moral beliefs about gays, other than a non-linked assertions that he voted against a law to allow "gay marriage".

Fifth, not all of "the Right" believe any such thing as gays "shouldn't have rights", at all,

Firm

You can fudge and obfuscate to your heart's content Firm. You can introduce as many red herrings as you please. I said nothing about this particular specimen Hinkle.

What I did state was that the only place on the political spectrum that contests gay rights is the Right. Opposition to gay rights is pretty much an exclusively Right wing phenomenon. Opposition to womens' rights is largely a Right wing phenomenon. This is the case throughout the Western world. This is also why arguments asserting equivalence across the spectrum fail completely.

If people locate themselves on the Right, then their first obligation in these debates is to dissociate themselves from the hate of the rabid Right, not to invent excuses for vacillation. Rather than fudging the issue, you ought to dissociate yourself from your fellow Right-wingers who parade their bigotry so openly by contesting the rights of gays, women and other minorities.

After you've done that, I'll listen to what you have to say on the topic more seriously.

Theon38 -> RE: Oh NOOO!! Another Gay GOP sex scandel brewing (8/16/2011 4:58:12 PM)

I don't understand why the left accepts everything but hypocrisy.

When you're given a position of authority (IE: A politician) we expect you to behave yourself.

I don't care if you're a hypocrite though. I'd almost rather you were. I'd rather you stood for something and failed to live up to that standard, than to have no standards at all.

I think you're wrong about this.

The right wants the same rights for everyone. Not different rights for the color of your skin, your gender, or your sexual preference.
