Do you really believe domestic dogs are your best line of defense?
In any case, I wasn't asking for comments on my lifestyle or mental state. Just wanted to know other's opinions on carrying and guns. I take it you don't like them

well, i wasnt gonna say anything cuz you people.. you carry guns!!!

I grew up on a farm and my father had a shot gun, just in case he needed to shoot a coyote or put an animal down. I dont recall him using it very often.

But being Canadian and gun control up there, having a gun, let alone carrying, its a very uncomfortable concept for me. And so far, living in the US, i have not felt unsafe enough to even think of getting one. I think if i felt that unsafe that for my own peace of mind i would move to someplace where i felt safe without one...

i guess the only exception would be if i lived on another farm where there were dangerous critters out there... hmm,.. come to think of it, there was a mouse invader here in my room 2 nights ago... I am glad i didnt have a gun tho, now that i think of it.. i bought some mouse traps from a dollar store and it caught the mouse just by its tail.. there it was in the corner tail clipped to the trap, cowering, its cute big ears and beady little eyes looking at me.. shit, i didnt know what to do with it, guess if i had a gun i could have blown it away (and part of the wall).. but i just took it outside and let it go, in my most gruff voice I told it not to come back again or he/she would regret it!

I don't feel threatened or nervous about anything in my neighborhood but you never know when some gun wielding maniac might come around shooting the place up. I'm proficient with a variety of firearms so it would be illogical not to keep a handgun within reach or in my vehicle. In Florida you can have a loaded handgun in your vehicle if it's holstered or in a case or glove box or console, resident or nonresident, no carry permit required. A handgun should be standard equipment like a jack, road flares or a spare tire.

It's generally not paranoia though some may have immediate need because of perceived threats like ex boyfriends and such. It's a tool that's useful in certain emergencies. If it's not with you then you won't have it if you need it. If you ever need it, there is no substitute.

Where did you get that I don't like guns? My riot gun is easy enough to access, and the shells are close, if you know where to reach in blindly. By a strange quirk of fate (?) we had a phone call about an hour ago to check out a security issue for a friend, and the .38 rode along in the cargo pocket of my shorts. First time I've carried it this year, but when you don't know what variety of speed freak needs to be given the "move along," safe is better than sorry. Turned out the beam of a flashlight, and some gentle but firm words took care of the situation.

Are dogs the best line of defense? No, but they are an exceptionally good layer.

On average, in my day Men controlled their emotions. By the time we got pissed off, there was ALOT to worry about. Women took care of the emotions. It was their job.

I know things have changed though. Both sexes can be dangerous now, if in possesion of power tools. That's what a gun is. You can kill with an axe or a hammer, or a whole bunch of other things. I firearm is nothing more than a power tool. It's not that great at sawing logs but that's not what it was built for.

On average, while I hold that everyone should be able to pack a piece, anytime anywhere, I also realize that today, most people are better off not. Hidden abuse, repressed memories, this and that, trustees of modern chemistry, nope. Better off not. And if you want to talk about drinking, it's nothing like these drugs today. I've had guns most of my life, and drank. Got DRUNK ! BIGTIME. But when you are drunk you kinda know not to do certain shit, playing with guns is one of them. Driving cars is on that list somewhere too, but fuck that point for now.

But I mean totally sober, a hell of alot of people should not have guns. It's just not up to me to make sure they don't, in fact noone should. Therefore if they do, and they take to shooting at me, I would just as soon be ready for it. Sorry.

The dogs do make me feel safer, since at the very least, I think they would bark if someone came in the house, so definitely they are the first layer of defense. But I am not sure they would do much more than that, they are more cute and sweet than scary.

I am used to being around a lot of people who carry. Many do here in Colorado and you wouldn't know it bcause of concealed carry laws. I never conceal carry, I open carry. The only time I usually carry is in the woods. Hungry mountain lions are known to attack hikers, fisherman, etc. A hand cannon with some frangible ammo will take one down quick if need be. Also snake load is great for rattlers if you find yourself cornered or your dog in danger. However, I do think it is necessary keep one in a vehicle or at arms reach from the bed. I don't want to be a helpless victim of a crime.

I would like to agree with some previous posters about dogs and shot guns. Dogs are an excellent early detection system. Better than any alarm system. They are paranoid, defensive and loud. My mutts wouldn't hurt a fly but they make a big stink when they hear something out of place in the house. If that doesn't spook an intruder then my 870 marine will. Racking a shotgun is big detterent. A buddy of mine teaches a self defense class. He says that everyone will pretty much recognize the sound of shot gun being racked and know whats coming for em. In many cases the intruder will just flee, so you don't even have to see if you have the balls to shoot them. This is really handy because most people are shaking with nerves during an invasion. If you still want the hand gun, go with a laser sight. It is very intimidating (proves to the bastard that you are actually aiming at them) and it allows you to just point and shoot even under immense stress.

As far as safety is concerned, don't go with ammo that has good penetration. Don't want to blast through a wall and kill an unintended person. Most importantly, get range time in regularly, be very familiar with any weapon you own, keep them safe, don't use them when intoxicated, and take a safety course. I can guarantee you most accidents occur, not because there is a gun in the house, but because a jackass lives in the house. The people I know (I include myself in this) who are heavily armed with lots of guns, are generally safety nazis. We don't just buy one and think we are now safe. We may be able to defend ourselves better, but we know we just brought a weapon designed for one purpose, to kill, in our home. THis is a responsibility we don't take lightly. When I got married, I made sure the wife knew how to shoot and disarm every weapon in the house. We go to the range often and are proficient with the guns. Shooting isn't her thing, but she is comfortable with weapons because she is familiar with them.

If anyone gets a gun, doesn't take care of it, isn't familiar with it, and isn't safe with it, and ultimately shoots themself with it....I say oh well you can discuss the fine points of evolution with Darwin in the afterlife.

A 9mm, because I live in the South, in the woods and I can. Clearly, many see this as archaic, drastic and irresponsible.. and that's cool. I carry when I travel because I don't trust that most people on this planet are super sweet and looking out for my best interest. Also, I am thankful to have an option other than hoping I can outrun the copperheads, rattlesnakes, and coyotes I encounter, on my property, on a near daily basis. However, that damn thing is soooo not going under my pillow.

Glock 19, for my person because I may feel the need.
12 gauge for my home because I always feel the need. {If you kick in my door/window, you're not coming to bake me a cake. A thought process taught to me, along with firearm knowledge/safety, by my ex-husband, the cop.}

Is everyone who carries in genuine fear for their lives? Really? Why don't you move to a place where you are not afraid. I would, if I really thought that there was a chance of dying beacuse of where I lived I would get the fuck out of there asap.
But maybe I value other peoples lives as well as my own

sometimes I wonder if some people sit awake at night, nursing their weapons (and semis!) just HOPING someone treads on their lawn or gives them another excuse to open fire!
As someone who held a firearms dealer license, I am used to handling guns - but the attitudes of many who possess them still concerns me at times.

back home we had guns around because we were sorta in the woods and there were always people breaking into the barns and stealing stuff. ALWAYS. they even cut brake lines on vehicles parked in front to move them out of the way. THEY had guns and other weapons, as we'd always learn when the sheriff picked them up, so... yeah.
there was also a lot of meth and meth-related ridiculousness around then, too (rural America, you know). my uncle liked guns and taught us all gun safety. we'd do target practice (i was secretly really good, haha ^.~), read safety and other gun-related articles, learn to clean them, blah blah blah. nothing major that consumed your life, but if anyone in the house had to use them, we were all prepared to do it (at least in theory -- i guess you never really know, until you REALLY have to).

i don't personally own a gun at the moment, though. i do sometimes worry that someone might break in (i live in a cute, quiet neighborhood now, but i haven't always, so i think that has something to do with it), but i have nothing worth stealing, my car outside isn't worth much at all, and my dog presents enough hassle to make it a really non-worthwhile endeavor. =p my dog may be cute and shaggy, but if you're on the other side of the door and he hears something weird, he flies into a rage in 0.6 seconds. hahaha ^_^ he's 50 lbs, and looks like a golden retriever, just brown, and everyone who meets him from that side of the door is very surprised by him. he gets even more upset if he thinks i'm stressed out. he's also nearly bitten people he thought were "pushing the lines." =p he's sweet, loveable, a little emo, likes kids and laying on laps, but he's also really good at recognizing "bad guys" when he has to.

plus all the neighbors have dogs who bark at the slightest sound, too, which can be annoying, but trying to break in a house in this neighborhood without being noticed would take some serious ninja skills, and nobody here has anything valuable enough to attract that kind of burglar.

And they usually involve people dealing drugs.

But it has become a big talking point for the NRA to spread fear.
